Karting to Conquer Cancer: How Your Donations Help Cure Cancer

WALLINGFORD, CT – The Karting to Conquer Cancer event, built to raise money for the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, will take place on January 16, at On Track Karting, in Wallingford, CT. The event was created for the racing community to help fight back against cancer, as so many have been affected directly, or indirectly, by this horrible disease. With the help of your support, cancer research and patient care will benefit directly from your investments.

The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) has been described as having a level of patient service and care that is unmatched in other centers. The DFCI offers special programs that serve the emotional, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of patients and their families throughout their care, helping to cope with the effects of cancer treatment. The care extends beyond the time of medication and therapy, and ensures care continues after treatment ends.

Your support of the Karting to Conquer Cancer will help fund basic research. With early-stage research not eligible for federal funding, your investments help promising theories form into scientific discoveries, leading to major breakthroughs in care. Your support helps materialize the creative, innovative science that leads to tomorrow’s cures, including genetically-based clinical trials. This theory groups patients by the specific genetic mutation that drives their tumor growth, instead of the location of the tumor in their bodies, leading to discovering safer, less toxic, and more effective treatments. Your donation supports this type of personalized medicine by helping researchers discover specific targets, and choosing particular drugs based on the likelihood of a positive response.

Another reason the DFCI is so successful is the quality of faculty. Your generosity helps attract and retain the highest caliber faculty, and recruit innovative scientists and clinicians from around the world to join the DFCI team in redefining cancer care and research. The state-of-the-art facilities, including the expansion of the Yawkey Center for Cancer Care, the Longwood Center, the Charles A. Dana Building with the expanded Jimmy Fund Clinic, and the Molecular Cancer Imaging Facility, are examples of how your support also strengthens the Institute’s ability to provide a strong connection between research and patient care.

According to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, in 1971, there were three million cancer survivors in the U.S. Today, there are nearly twelve million. Your gifts support the growing number of survivors to lead fulfilling, productive lives through survivorship programs, as well as programs that focus on the long-term physical, emotional, and social effects of cancer treatment.
