HARRISONS SHARE WISCASSET’S VICTORY LANE ON FATHER’S DAY WEEKEND
Fathers and sons are perhaps the tightest of bonds in the racing world. It’s a time-honored tradition for dads to pass along their knowledge of racing to their sons and someday “pass the torch”. It’s an extra special occasion when fathers and sons get to race together on the track head to head for a win. That opportunity came on Saturday night on Father’s Day weekend at Wiscasset Speedway when Michael and Kenny Harrison lined up side by side on the front row for a mid-race restart in the Maxwell’s Market Super Street feature. In the end, it was the student who beat the teacher as Michael took the checkered flag in the 30 lap feature and left his dad Kenny to claim third. It was the first time in Michael’s 8-year racing career that he shared victory lane with his dad – a veteran of nearly 30 years in the sport. Bobby Mesimer of Woolwich turned in his best performance of the season finishing in second, The Harrison family reunion wrapped up the Saturday night program that also saw action in the Pro Stocks, 4-Cylinder Pros, and Thunder 4 Minis, plus the first appearance of the year for the Nelcar Legends.
In the Schooner Bay Taxi Thunder 4 Mini’s 35 lap spotlight feature, David Cook of Jay took advantage of a handful of cautions to charge up from the back of the pack to take the win. It was his track-high 3rd win of the season. Jeff Farrington of Alan also had a good run through the field to claim second place. Following a mid-race spin by co-point leaders Doug Degroat and Michael Golding, Shane Webber of New Vinyard moved in and took home the third-place trophy. In doing so, he took over the point lead for himself in the competitive mini stock division.
The Norms Used Cars Pro Stocks saw action all over the track in their 40 lap feature. Several cautions for minor spins shook up the running order and kept the action level on high. West Bath’s Nick Reno set the early pace, building up a nearly full straightaway lead. But the handle went away on the #77 car as the race approached halfway. 2-time reigning champ Nick Hinkley took advantage and finally managed to take the lead from Reno on lap 30. From there he cruised to his second victory of the season. While the battle for the lead went on upfront, a pair of cars charged their way up from the back of the pack. Kevin Douglass of Sidney made a late run up the outside and secured the second-place finish. He was followed across the stripe by Scarborough’s Garrett Hall, who was making his second appearance of the season.
The Nelcar Legends were the next class on the track and managed to get in the first 7 laps of their 25 lap feature when a passing shower put a temporary halt to the action. The rain delay and subsequent track drying lasted nearly an hour, but the Legends picked right up where they left off. The battle up front was heated as young guns Trevor Krause, Luke Lebrun, and Coly Meserve tangled for the top spot. Krause soon took charge of the race and cruised to the victory. Meserve took home the 2nd place trophy and third place went to veteran racer Bob Weymouth of Topsham. For Weymouth, it was a strong run, as he withstood challengers on a pair of late-race restarts to claim the final spot in victory lane
The Brackett’s Market 4-Cylinder Pro 25 lap feature went caution-free with veteran Ryan Hayes of Jefferson taking the win, his second of the season. Chasing him across the line just a couple of car lengths behind was 11-year old Daniel Harding of Fairfield for the first trophy of his rookie campaign. Ben Burgess of Hartford picked up his second trophy of the season, finishing in 3rd.
Wiscasset Speedway returns to action Saturday, June 26th with Ames True Value NEMA Night – featuring the lightning-fast NEMA Midgets & NEMA Lites. The pit gate will open at 1:00 pm, the grandstand gate opens at 4:00 pm, and the green flag flies on the action at 5:00 pm. Grandstand admission is just $5 (kids 6&under free).
