THORNE WINS LATE MODEL SEASON OPENER AT WISCASSET

     A sunny but blustery and cold Saturday evening didn’t deter a large contingent of eager fans hungry to get some racing action. Group 2 finally got the chance to get their 2019 season going along with the first appearance of the season for the Wicked Good Vintage Racers. Skowhegan’s Zach Audet appeared to have a dominant win within his grasp in the spotlight feature for the Outlaw Minis until an electrical issue late in the race on lap 31 changed everything. Defending champ Jimmy Childs was there to capitalize on the leader’s tough luck and cruised to the feature win.

FOUR TITLES SETTLED SATURDAY NIGHT AT WISCASSET.

The 2018 season at Wiscasset Speedway is winding down and points championships are finally getting settled. Group 1 was in action Saturday night with three of the four divisions extremely close and one all but a formality. Feature winners on the night included Andy Saunders of Ellsworth in the ServPro of Biddeford Saco Prostocks. Saunders grabbed an early lead and then held off Sidney’s Kevin Douglass to the checkers. Wiscasset’s Nick Hinkley easily wrapped up his first Prostock championship. It the third championship of his career, bumping his father Harold Hinkley’s total up to 9 championships as a car owner over the past 25 years. The Maxwells Market Super Streets points battle could not be any closer as Jefferson’s Mike Hodgkins and Durham’s Michael Harrison rolled onto the track for their final feature tied atop the standings. RIPLEY DOUBLES DOWN ON COOL NIGHT AT WISCASSET

The North East Midget Association (NEMA) made its second appearance of the season at Wiscasset Speedway on Saturday night. Ames True Value NEMA Night always brings fans out to thrill at the amazing speed and quickness of the winged asphalt sprint cars. Once again, fans got what they came to see. The NEMA Lites had center stage this time with a 50 lap main event; twice the distance that they normally run. Ryan Locke of Chester, NH took an early lead an never looked back, turning in a dominant victory. He crossed the finish line nearly 2-1/2 seconds ahead of Richie Coy of Haskell, NJ and Danny Cugini of Marshfield, Ma. The Ford Focus powered cars wound around the 3/8 mile track in just over14 seconds. The high powered NEMA Midgets, the fastest asphalt sprint cars in the world, showed their stuff in a 25 lap support feature, with the track record on the line on a cool evening. Avery Stoehr of Lakeville, Ma was the class of the field, grabbing the lead on lap 2 and running away to a convincing win. He hustled his #39 Bertrand Motorsports machine around the track in near record time, turning in a 13.038-second lap for an average speed of 102 mph. He missed the track record, held by John Zych, by just 0.034 seconds. Stoehr was joined in victory lane by defending champ Randy Cabral of Kingston, Ma and record hold John Zych of Mendon, Ma. MIKE HOPKINS WINS THRILLING BOSS HOGG 150 AT WISCASSET SPEEDWAY

Wiscasset Speedway capped off an action-packed Labor Day weekend doubleheader on Sunday afternoon with the running of the 2018 Boss Hogg 150. The annual Pro Stock race attracted 32 of the region’s best racers all gunning for the $5000 winner’s take of a near $30,000 purse. Josh St Clair of Liberty, grandson of Hall of Fame racer “Boss Hogg” Dave St Clair led the field to the green with former BH100 winner Andy Saunders of Ellsworth alongside. The race got off to a rough start with 3 red flags for multi-car wrecks between lap 15 and 20, mostly thinning our cars in the middle and rear of the field. (more…)
