Drellos Scores Big Win at Sold-Out Devil’s Bowl Mid-Season Championships

Double-points victory helps to inch point lead ahead

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – It seemed to be only a matter of time before Demetrios Drellos won a feature at Devil’s Bowl Speedway, and the alarm bell rang loud and true on Sunday, August 3, at the double-points “Vince Quenneville Sr. Memorial” Mid-Season Championships. “The Greek Streak” headlined a busy night that also included wins by Johnny Bruno, Josh Coonradt, Andrew FitzGerald, Tim Simonds, Austin Chaves, and Cory Gray.

The event was a benchmark for the season at the Vermont track; not only did the race draw the first sellout crowd of the year in the pandemic-limited grandstand seats, the handicapper’s tower saw 163 racing vehicles signed in for competition.

Veteran earns first win at home track since 1995

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Everyone in attendance at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Sunday, July 26 became a Brian Whittemore fan – at least for one night. The veteran underdog driver scored an immensely popular victory in the headline Pepsi Sportsman Modified division, highlighting a roster of winners that included Evan Roberts, Kim Duell, Andrew FitzGerald, Michael Daniels, and Cody O’Brien.

Whittemore started on the pole in the 30-lap main event and broke out to an early lead, but Jack Speshock came calling on the outside lane at the one-third mark. Speshock took the point to lead laps 10 and 11, but he slipped out of the groove and crashed off the track in Turn 1 on lap 12, ending his race. Whittemore reassumed the lead and ran away from that point on with full support from both spectators and competing teams in the pit area.

Warren nabs his second in Limited Sportsman class

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Bobby Hackel did not let a bump in the road get him down, and instead got right back on the winning track at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Sunday, July 19. Hackel’s win was the headline moment of the night, which also saw Anthony Warren, Andrew FitzGerald, Willie Rice, and Kamden Duffy visit victory lane.

Hackel lost the championship point lead in the Pepsi Sportsman Modified division during the week due to a scoring recheck on a previous race, but he made up for it with an authoritative drive to his third feature win of the season. The fourth-generation Rensselaer, N.Y., racer survived a rough-and-tumble start to the 30-lapper which saw a spate of caution periods in the early laps, then drove from his 17th starting position into the lead on lap 10 and ran away uncontested.

Pierson dominates SCoNE opener

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Bobby Hackel put on a holiday clinic at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Thursday, July 2, with a dominant back-to-front performance in the Independence Day “Firecracker 50” that brought him his second win of the season. Likewise, Adam Pierson put on a convincing display of power, as did Johnny Bruno, Jim McKiernan, Michael Daniels, and Austin Chaves. Fans were also treated to a massive holiday fireworks show.

Hackel’s victory came in the 50-lap Pepsi Sportsman Modified feature. After starting 16th on the 24-car grid, the former track champion took to the outside lane with a vengeance and marched toward the front. While Hackel began his ascent, rookie Marty Hutchins chased what would have been an upset of historic proportions; Hutchins had failed to qualify for the first three races of his freshman season, but led the first 18 laps by a wide margin from the pole position in his first career Sportsman-level start.

Warren pulls last-lap slide job for Limited Sportsman win

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Bobby Hackel had a plan at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Sunday, June 21, and he saw it through: Go to the top groove on the track, set sail, and win the race. Mission accomplished. Hackel headlined a list of eight feature winners that also included Anthony Warren, Andrew FitzGerald, Chris Conroy, Austin Chaves, John Flach, Stephen Denton, and Joey Trudeau.

Hackel’s win in the 30-lap Pepsi Sportsman Modified race came in the annual Father’s Day “Topless” Special, in which the cars race without roofs for a different look and feel. Outside polesitter Alex Bell’s car broke coming to the green flag, creating a massive scramble on the frontstretch, but after the restart 2016 Devil’s Bowl champion Hackel blasted from his third-place starting position into the lead.
