WATERFORD \u2014 Marc Shafer was the winner in the Super X car division. Ed
\nLoomis won the X-Car feature, Maddie Harkin was the winner in the
\nBandoleros. Peter Bennett was the Legend car division winner in feature
\none. John O’Sullivan was the Legend car winner in feature two.
\nPeter Bennett and John O\u2019Sullivan were the two fastest Legend car
\ndrivers Wednesday. Mike Blaskey, meanwhile, was the most consistent. All
\nthree had big nights in the Twin 20 Legend car races, which were the
\nfeature attractions during the Wild and Wacky Wednesday competition May
\n30 at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl.<\/p>\n

Bennett took the lead on lap 8 to win the first feature, while
\nO\u2019Sullivan, who started on the pole, dominated every lap to win the
\nsecond 20-lap feature. Blaskey, meanwhile, finished second in both races
\nto move into the point lead.
\nBennett started the first feature in the eighth position, but it didn\u2019t
\ntake him long to move to the front. He blistered by Brandon Martinez
\nwith 12 laps to go to take over the lead.
\nIt wasn\u2019t a done deal, however. Blaskey, who started 11th, was able to
\nmove into second, but couldn\u2019t find a way past Bennett.
\n\u201cI knew Mike was coming,\u201d Bennett said. \u201cAnd there was oil on the track
\nso the conditions weren\u2019t that great. So I just concentrated on keeping
\nmy line and I kept Mike behind me.\u201d
\nO\u2019Sullivan had a mediocre 10th place finish in the opener, but he
\nstarted on the pole in the second race. He roared into the lead as soon
\nas the green flag came out and no one could track him down, despite two
\nlate-race caution flags.
\n\u201cThe first race did not go as planned,\u201d O\u2019Sullivan said. \u201cI was pretty
\nbad out there. But I got lucky with the redraw and we started the second
\nrace on the pole. I have to thank my crew. In the second race, I was
\nable to keep everyone behind me.\u201d
\nEven Blaskey, who had a fast car at the end of the race, but had to
\nsettle for second..
\nOther winners Wednesday were Maddie Harkin in the 20-lap Bandolero
\nfeature, Eddie Loomis in the 25-lap X-Car feature and Marc Shafer in the
\n25-lap Super X Car feature.
\nHarkin was in third place with five laps remaining in the Bandolero
\nrace, but was able to torpedo past both Ethan Simmons and Nick Hovey to
\nmuscle her way to the front. Her car made contact with Hovey\u2019s car at
\nthe finish line, but Harkin was able to win by a bread crumb.
\n\u201cAll I want to do is win,\u201d Harkin said, \u201cso whatever I have to do is
\nwhat I\u2019m going to do,\u201d
\nIn this case, it was a bold move to the inside of Hovey. It was Harkin\u2019s
\nsecond straight win.\u201d
\nEddie Loomis, known as \u201cThe Neon Cowboy,\u201d came from the 16th starting
\nposition to post the X-Car win. After a lap 13 caution bunched the
\nfield, Loomis was able to scamper under Will Rheaume to grab the lead
\nfor keeps.
\n\u201cThere\u2019s no question my car was on rails,\u201d Loomis said. \u201cThe leader
\nmoved to the outside, I stayed on the inside and I was able to get the
\nwin.\u201d
\nSteven Olsen was a contender throughout the race, finishing third.
\nMarc Shafer looked like he would have to settle for a second place
\nfinish in the 25-lap Super X Car race. His car, however, came alive with
\ntwo laps to go, as he thundered around Ray Reed on lap 24 to get the
\nwin.
\n\u201cI was just having fun out there,\u201d Shafer said. \u201cMy crew was great. They
\nmade a late adjustment on the car, and it stuck.\u201d
\nDave Yardley moved up into second place and Don Berge was third. Jason
\nLarivee Jr., Reed and Denny Lee Hoffman were disqualified after the
\nrace.
\nRacing resumes Saturday at the Speedbowl with a busy program. The SK
\nModifieds will be making their first appearance of the season in a
\n40-lap feature. They will be joined by the Sportsmen, Mini-Stocks, Open
\nVintage Modifieds and Legends. In addition the first Spectator Drags
\ncompetition will be held. The final event of the night will be a
\nCompact-Mid-size Enduro.
\nThe drag racing starts at 4:30 p.m. Qualifying begins at 5 p.m. with
\nfeatures to follow.<\/p>\n
