Governor of the State of Vermont, Phil Scott from Middlesex, VT, has won more races than any other driver in the history of the ACT Late Model division at Thunder Road, dating back to 1992. For over twenty years he has compiled a winning record that may never be broken.

Ironically, Phil Scott has never won the Vermont Governor’s Cup. He served the State of Vermont as a Senator from Washington County for a decade, and currently is preparing to run for a third term as Lt. Governor.

Although he has not hoisted the elusive Governor’s Cup, Scott has won just about every other major race, including two Milk Bowls (billed as the “Toughest Short Track Race in America”), the Memorial Day Classic, the Merchants Bank opening day event, and twenty-five (25) other feature events. He has won three “King of the Road” season-long track Championship titles. He also won 9 major American Canadian Tour events in a span of just four years from 1997- 2000!

Obviously, the Governor’s Cup 150 race has a special meaning to the businessman- turned-politician. “I have had a couple chances to win it over the years, but racing at Thunder Road is a pretty humbling experience. Nothing is certain until you get past the checkers. I guess it would be pretty neat to win the Governor’s Cup as a sitting Lt. Governor, but really, at this stage in my racing career, I just like the idea of a few hours of unwinding on Thursday nights. I guess I think of racing as my golf game or boat. I still enjoy the competition, and I really like watching these young teams coming along. Although, if things work out, I certainly wouldn’t mind raising the Cup–I guess that is my competitive spirit”, concluded Scott.

Scott will buckle up for the annual run for the Governor’s Cup presented by VP-SEF with 29 other hopefuls, including NASCAR Sprint Cup star Clint Bowyer, from Emporia, Kansas. Also entered are two Barre favorite sons, defending Governor’s Cup winner Cody Blake, and two-time track Champion and twice Governor’s Cup winner Nick Sweet.

The 35th running for the Vermont Governor’s Cup 150, presented by VP Small Engine Fuel, is scheduled for Thursday, July 10. Gates will open at 4:00 and post time for qualifying heats is 6:00pm. Adult tickets are just $20 dollars and kids 12 and under are free.

Barre, VT – The Lt.
