Saturday’s race also carries additional purse money

Woody Pitkat, of Stafford Springs, CT, still has the point lead entering the series final 2015 appearance at Monadnock. 28 points separate Pitkat from (Todd) Patnode and Szegedy. Chris Pasteryak, of Jewett City, CT, is 29 points from the top, with Nashua, NH, veteran Norm Wrenn fifth. Additionally, former Monadnock winners Kirk Alexander, Jon McKennedy, Rowan Pennink, and Les Hinckley III, are expected entries.

Local favorite Russ Hersey, last years top rookie Mike Willis Jr, and Anthony Nocella, the winner at Beech Ridge earlier this month, is expected. This year’s event has a different twist. An additional $6100 will be added to the race payoff thanks to the efforts of Lisa Patnode, wife of driver Todd Patnode, who organized a lap sponsorship program several weeks ago.

Patnode reached out to race fans, sponsors, race teams, drivers, media representatives, and many others and will continue to accept contributions right up to race time. Race product certificates from various race related businesses’ will also be part of the special bonus program.

“This is a very special race to me,” explained Patnode.“Victor Johnson was a very special person. I wanted more for this race this year. I enjoy a challenge. About 2 months ago I began getting lap sponsors. Knowing I needed to fill 100 spots was a cool challenge but I also wanted to incorporate something else. I came up with the idea of the ‘Johnson Laps’ Barry Johnson graciously offered to sponsor it. So on every 5th lap because Victor drove car number 5, I have chosen a position in the field that will also receive $25.”

Qualifying races begin at 6:00 PM

The next-to-last Thursday night event of the 56th Thunder Road racing season is this Thursday, August 20 with Jet Service Envelope/Accura Printing Night. N. Haverhill, NH’s Derrick O’Donnell is just three races away from a record-tying third consecutive “King of the Road” title, making each spot critical this Thursday night.

The evening will also feature the annual “Run-What-U-Brung” spectator races, allowing people to race their registered and inspected street vehicles mano-a-mano around the ¼-mile oval. Participants must register at the pit gate by 5:30pm, purchase a pit pass, and wear a full racing helmet.

O’Donnell had a big night last Thursday. Barre challengers Nick Sweet and Cody Blake were both involved in crashes while O’Donnell escaped trouble to secure a fifth-place finish. O’Donnell now has a 42-point lead over Sweet and is 60 points ahead of Blake, putting him in the catbird seat for a third straight championship, a feat accomplished only once in Thunder Road’s 56-year history. John Donahue and Scott Dragon round out the top-five.

The Late Models are still looking for their first winner of the Maplewood Convenience Stores “Triple Crown”. The bonus for a driver winning their heat, semi-feature, and the 50-lap main event is up to $800 after Brett Gervais’ bid last Thursday was felled by a flat tire in the feature.

“I definitely think I’m going to get another crack at it,” Gervais said. “Winning two out of three is always good, but that last one is the one that matters the most. It’s definitely something I’m looking to do, but the season is coming to a close, so the pressure is on. We’ll just have to work harder and try to bring it to the finish.”

Behind the leading Late Model group, a tight race has developed for the rest of the top-10 positions. Sixty points separate sixth-place Jason Corliss from 12th-place Gervais, leaving much to be decided in the final three events.

The title chase is wide open in the Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen with just 48 points separating the top-six drivers. Defending Tiger Champion Jason Woodard of Waterbury Ctr. has led the standings for the past four weeks, but his margin over Wolcott’s Brendan Moodie shrunk to 17 points in last Thursday’s Twin 50s. Dylan Payea and Christopher Pelkey are third and fourth with Stephen Donahue and Mike Martin tied for fifth.

Hardwick’s Jaden Perry has a mere 10-point lead over Wolcott’s Jamie Davis in the Allen Lumber Street Stock standings. Marcel J. Gravel, Tyler Austin, and Jamon Perry sit third through fifth.

Jet Service Envelope/Accura Printing Night at Barre’s Thunder Road featuring the “Run-What-U-Brung” spectator races is this Thursday, August 20 with a 7 pm post time.

Hudson NH racer Phil Lausier ran off to the win in the first 2015 appearance by the Pro-4 Modifieds at Lee USA Speedway on Friday night, just one of six feature winners during yet another exciting night of racing action at New Hampshire’s “Center of Speed”.

Lausier jumped out to the lead early in the race, with second-generation racer Norman Wrenn III holding down the second spot until late in the event, when Dave Berghman got past to take runner-up honors. Wrenn was third across the stripe, with Rob Richardi, Jr. and Derek Robbie rounding out the top five.

Continuing the good night for sons of former racers, Mike Ordway, Jr. of Fremont got past five-time winner Tommy Tombarello, Jr. and picked up his third win of the season in the Supermodified 30-lap main event aboard the storied Witkum Brothers Racing machine.

Ordway is now within 100 wins of his father, Mike’ Sr.’s record, many of those victories having come here at Lee USA in the Paul Dunigan big-block Supermodified. The younger Ordway has been no stranger to victory lane here at Lee either, having won several feature events on his way to the Small Block Super championship a decade ago.

Artie Rousseau of Newmarket, whose father also logged many a lap in the Super-Modified ranks in the early days of Lee USA nearly 30 years ago, led the first eight laps of the Super main before giving up the top spot to points leader Tombarello, who was looking for win number six on the season.

But Ordway was having no part of that, and he quickly reeled in the leader and moved past to take over the point. Ordway went on to post the win by a .728 margin of victory over Tombarello, with Rochester’s Mike Spurling rounding out the podium with a solid third place effort.

Fourth place went to rookie driver Jarrod Soucy of Hudson, MA in the former Jake Stergios championship machine, followed by opening night winner “Super Dave” Sanborn of Tilton, Moe Lattime of Kingston, Lance Barthelemy of Fremont, Mike Keddy of Raymond, Jim Barker of Meredith, and Rousseau.

Hampstead’s Jimmy Ryder made his first-ever trip to the winner’s circle in the R & R Public Wholesale Late Model Sportsman 30-lapper, holding off a tough challenge from two-time winner Jimmy Russell of Brentwood to join the ranks of feature winners in the LMS this season.

Russell came across the stripe within a second of winner Ryder, with fan favorite Alby Ovitt of Barrington scoring his first podium finish of the season aboard his new ride, the Brian House, A Family Cab entry. George Helliwell of Pelham took fourth, with newcomer Charlie Sanborn closing out the top five in his 2015 debut.

Sixth went to a resurgent Geoff Rollins, who recovered from an early crash to post a point-saving finish, followed by two-time 2015 winner Frankie Eldridge of Stratham, Jason Ryan of Salem, former champ Grant Aither of Kingston, and Ray Dinsmore of Waterboro, ME.

Twin 25-lap feature events were on tap for the David’s Race Cars and Components Hobby Stocks, with veteran competitor Pete Evans of Berwick, ME taking down the win in the first. 2014 Rookie of the Year Zac Fraser of Nottingham posted a strong second place finish in the first half of the best combined finish event.

Fraser was chased across the line by LMS regular Nate Leavitt of Buxton, ME, Bill Helliwell of Pelham, Billy Clement, Jr. of Milford, Dave McDonald of Tewksbury, MA, Kevin Bowman of Grafton, MA, Chris Harding of Lebanon, ME, and Kenny “Caveman” Scott of Salem.

In the nightcap, Helliwell (another son of a former Lee USA racer) got to the front early, and went on the not only post the 25-lap win, but he took the overall title as well, earning a $500 payday from division sponsor David’s Race Cars and Components.

Christin DeStefano of Tewksbury, MA scored her first career win in the Tri-City Line-X Ironman feature event, holding off three-time 2015 winner Zach Washburn of Rochester to collect the checkered flag and make that ever-elusive first trip to the winner’s circle.

Tyler Mitchell of Dracut, MA put in a strong third place run, with Travis Hollins of Milford, Hannah Shaw of Chester, Greg Brannan, Jack Victoria of Northwood, Troy Washburn of Farmington, Mike Farrington of Northwood, and Howard Brown, Jr. rounding out the top ten. Craig Pyle of Gorham, ME scored the Pure Stock win, followed by Jesse Tellier of Dracut, MA, and Tyler Mailhot.

Shawn Knight of South Paris won his third Budweiser Oxford Championship Series Super Late Model race of the season Saturday night, with a dominant late-race performance at Oxford Plains Speedway.

It was Knight’s third victory in just seven attempts this season, clearly establishing the South Paris racer as the chief hope for victory in the August 30 AIM Recycling USA Oxford 250 among weekly Budweiser Championship Series racers.

Knight took command just past the halfway point from Turner teenager Gunnar Rowe, who built an healthy lead as Knight worked his way through the pack. A caution flag and restart put Knight alongside, and the veteran was just hooked up, and he drove away. Rowe held on for an impressive second-place finish.

Mark Lundblad, Jr. of Conway, New Hampshire posted a career-best third-place Super Late Model finish, driving around several competitive racing machines en route to his first trophy in the top class at Oxford Plains Speedway.

Buckfield’s Vanna Brackett and Wayne Helliwell, Jr. of Dover, New Hampshire rounded out the top five. Rowe and current championship points leader Timmy Brackett of Buckfield won the Super Late Model heat races.

Rookie Calvin Rose, Jr. of Turner came out on top after a wild, caution-filled 30-lap feature race for the Allen’s Coffee Flavored Brandy Street Stock division. It was the first win in the class for the former Mini Stock hotshoe.

Rose’s door to victory lane was opened up when the three cars in front of him got together on a restart late in the race. Rose then outran the previous week’s winner, David Whittier of Poland, to the checkered flag.

Joining Rose and Whittier on the podium was Rick Spaulding of Lisbon, one of the three drivers in front of the eventual winner on the fateful restart. Jonathan Emerson of Sabattus and Oxford’s Josh Childs rounded out the top five. Peter Huston of Lisbon Falls and Zach Emerson of Sabattus scored heat race wins in the Street Stock division.

Scott Alexander of Newburgh led flag-to-flag in the 25-lap Modified main event. The previous week’s winner, Evan Armington of Lovell, pulled alongside the eventual winner at one point, but Alexander maintained his advantage until the checkered flag waved.

Scott Robbins of Dixfield stayed atop the OPS Mods championship standings with a third-place finish. Ryan Phillips of Buxton and Windham’s Jimmy Emerson rounded out the top five. Alexander also won the heat race.

Hall of Famer Jon Lizotte prevailed once again in Wood Pellet Warehouse Figure 8 division action. Lizotte took the lead from Carthage racer Tommy Tompkins and led Tompkins to the checkered flag. Auburn’s Mike St. Germain claimed the third-place trophy.

Cam Childs of Leeds charged through the field in short order, then held off Bandits points leader Shaun Hinkley of Oxford to score yet another victory in his 20-lap finale. Oxford’s Jacob Hall nailed down the final trophy spot in the entry-level main event. Adam O’Neil of Lewiston and Hinkley won the heat races for the Bandits class.

Budwesier Oxford Championship Series competition resumes on Saturday night, August 22 with the final Super Late Model race before the 42nd Annual AIM Recycling USA Oxford 250 classic, set for Sunday, August 30 at 1:30 p.m. For more information visit oxfordplains.com or call (207) 539-8865.

Results from Budwesier Championship Series competition at Oxford Plains Speedway; Saturday, August 15, 2015; (finishing position, car number, driver, driver’s hometown).

Budweiser Super Late Model (50 laps) 1 25 Shawn Knight, South Paris; 2 24 Gunnar Rowe, Turner; 3 28 Mark Lundblad, Jr., Conway, NH; 4 3 Vanna Brackett, Buckfield; 5 27 Wayne Helliwell, Jr., Dover, NH; 6 36 Scott Robbins, Dixfield; 7 60 Timmy Brackett, Buckfield; 8 94 Shawn Martin, Turner; 9 21 David Oliver, Standish; 10 53 Alan Wilson, Hebron; 11 73 Adam Polvinen, Auburn; 12 46 Dennis Spencer, Jr., Oxford; 13 06 Jeremy Davis, Tamworth, NH; 14 44 Kyle Treadwell, Buckfield; 15 61 TJ Brackett, Buckfield; 16 82 John Michael Dhennette, Thompson, CT; 17 03 Scott Moore, Anson; 18 0 Spencer Morse, Waterford; 19 72 Chris Coolidge, Norway; 20 77 Maggie Ferland, Poland; 21 5 Dustin Bisson, Greene.

Allen’s Coffee Flavored Brandy Street Stock (30 laps) 1 8 Calvin Rose, Jr., Turner; 2 58 David Whittier, Poland; 3 36 Rick Spaulding, Lisbon; 4 24 Jonathan Emerson, Sabattus; 5 3 Josh Childs, Oxford; 6 63 Bryce Mains, Naples; 7 17 Gary Davis, Harrison; 8 23 Zach Emerson, Sabattus; 9 71 Jason LaValley, Auburn; 10 60 Richard Wentworth, Center Conway, NH; 11 03 Zach Dresser, Oxford; 12 4 Jordan Russell, Norway; 13 99 Matt Williams, Brownfield; 14 33 Andrew Breton, Sabattus; 15 20 Peter Huston, Lisbon Falls.

OPS Mods (25 laps) 1 17 Scott Alexander, Newburgh; 2 9 Evan Armington, Lovell; 3 36 Scott Robbins, Dixfield; 4 64 Matt Sanborn, Westbrook; 5 12 Jimmy Emerson, Windham; 6 89 Ryan Phillips, Buxton; 7 05 Ron Henry, New Gloucester; 8 4 Nik Coates, Turner; 9 2 Randy Sanborn, West Baldwin.

Wood Pellet Warehouse Figure 8 (15 laps) 1 27 Jon Lizotte, Lewiston; 2 127 Tommy Tompkins, Carthage; 3 777 Mike St. Germain, Auburn; 4 97 Eric Hodgkins, Auburn; 5 17 Mike Neddenreip, Harrison; 6 6 Geoff Low, Minot.

Bandits (20 laps) 1 56 Cam Childs, Leeds; 2 2 Shaun Hinkley, Oxford; 3 5 Jake Hall, Oxford.

Anthony Belfiore nabbed his first North East Street Stock Tour victory, after holding off Geoff Rollins for over thirty laps in the “51 for 500”, presented by Robertson’s Auto Sales, event at Speedway 51.

The drivers had special help during out-of-car introductions, bringing children from the crowd on to the track as honorary crew chiefs. The children helped strap drivers in their cars, and made sure their drivers were ready for the feature event.

Belfiore started on the pole, and jumped to the lead early, before a caution on lap 14 brought the field back together. Jim Boyle restarted on the outside of Belfiore, but Belfiore’s Lawrence Air Motive Chevrolet Monte Carlo was too strong, and pulled away, bringing Rollins, Chris Douton, Joe Arena, and Patrick Tanguay with him. The top five separated themselves from the rest of the field, until an incident between Arena and Douton brought out the second caution of the night.

Douton would find trouble again on the restart, after contact with Tyler Janovsky left both drivers with damage, and Douton slamming the wall on the front stretch. Douton would stay on the track, but would not contend for the win the rest of the night.

Rollins and Belfiore would run nose to tail for the final twelve laps, but Rollins was unable to mount a charge, and Belfiore took the win.

“I just kept it as smooth as I possibly could,” commented Belfiore. “He had to go around me if he was faster than me, but he ran me clean.”

The duo seemed glued nose to tail for multiple laps late in the race, but did not make contact. Belfiore commented on that fact, saying “We used to race Mini Stocks together at Hudson [International Speedway]. We have a lot of respect for each other. They are a great family.”

Rollins unofficially took the point lead with his second place finish. Rollins knew he couldn’t get around Belfiore cleanly, stating “The track is really hard to pass on, and the only way I could’ve gotten by him was to rough him up a little bit. I’d like to have some friends at the end of the night.”

Joe Arena fought his way back through the field to finish the podium. On his eventful night, Arena was thankful for help from Jim Boyle’s crew after suffering a flat tire in the incident with Douton, saying “We got tangled up a little bit, and ended in the infield. Thankfully for Jim Boyle’s crew, they changed the left front tire, and the car was a rocket ship after that.”

Patrick Tanguay would salvage a fourth place finish, with Boyle finishing fifth. Bryan Town took the sixth spot, with Douton crossing the line seventh. Robbie Bodwell, Tyler Janovsky, and Jay Bennett finished eighth through tenth, respectively.

The North East Street Stock Tour will be back in action at New London-Waterford Speedbowl, on August 29.

OFFICIAL RESULTS

51 for 500, presented by Robertson’s Auto Sales

Speedway 51

8/14/15

Pos. The young star has had a season like no other driver in the tour’s history, and with only three races left, the 2015 championship is lurking in the back Griffith’s mind.

“I’m hoping were going to maintain the lead [at Hudson International Speedway],” said Griffith. “I try not to think about points, but we sort of have to now.”

Griffith has blossomed under car owner and crew chief Louie Mechalides, and is seeking another strong night at his hometrack, saying “We hope for the same outcome. I’ll be glad to be back at Hudson.”

Second-place in the championship standings, Barry Gray is no slouch at Hudson International Speedway himself. The veteran driver has finished in the top 10 in each of the seven events run at the track with the Granite State Pro Stock Series, including a second place finish in the June event. Gray is positioned to have his best finish in the championship standings since the series’ inception, but will have to fend off Josh King and Mike Parks in the final three races.

The Granite State Pro Stock Series will be a guest at Hudson International Speedway, on August 15, for the Hudson Hugger. Post time for this event is 5:03 pm.

Seventeen-year-old Stephen Donahue of Graniteville was not to be denied at Thunder Road on Thursday, August 13 as he took the overall win in the Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen Twin 50s on U.S. Army Recruiting Night.

The second-generation driver won the first 50-lap feature, but cut a right-front tire on lap 12 of the second feature after contact with point leader Jason Woodard. Undeterred, Donahue stormed through the field, grabbing the second position on the final lap for a winning overall score of three points.

Milton’s Dylan Payea took second overall after finishing second in the first segment and fourth in the second segment. Joe Steffen was third with 10 points, followed by Christopher Pelkey and Kyle Streeter, who was making his first Tiger Sportsman start at Thunder Road. Second-segment winner Brendan Moodie, Woodard, Mike Billado, Shawn Fleury, and Brian Delphia completed the top-10.

Local driver Jason Corliss grabbed his second Thunder Road Late Model win of the year in the 50-lap trophy dash. Corliss took the lead from polesitter Eric Chase halfway through the event and survived consecutive restarts on laps 32 and 33 for incidents that swept up championship contenders Cody Blake and Nick Sweet.

Matt White finished second followed by Jim “Boomer” Morris. Scott Dragon took fourth, and point leader Derrick O’Donnell came in fifth, taking advantage of Sweet and Blake’s misfortune. Rookie Darrell Morin, John Donahue, Chase, Kyle Pembroke, and Jason Allen rounded out the top-10.

North Montpelier’s Donny Yates became the first three-time winner of the season in the 25-lap Allen Lumber Street Stock feature. Yates grabbed the lead on lap eight and was never seriously challenged the rest of the way.

Marcel J. Gravel finished second. Jamie Davis took third followed by Bunker Hodgdon and Jaden Perry. Jamon Perry, Matthew Smith, Will Hennequin, Alan Maynard, and Gary Mullen also earned top-10 finishes.

The penultimate Thursday night of the 2015 Thunder Road season is next Thursday, August 20 with Jet Service Envelope/Accura Printing Night.
