Brent Dragon of Milton, Vt., heads to the track he calls home for the ACT Late Model Tour Mohawk Casino Fall Foliage 300 at Airborne Speedway in Plattsburgh, N.Y. Dragon is a three-time track champion in the Airborne Late Model division (1995, 1996, 2000), and he won the Fall Foliage 200 in 2004 — the year he swept both the Spring Green 100 and Fall Foliage 200. He is second in the ACT standings with two races remaining, having posted three Top-5s and an incredible eight Top-10 finishes through 11 races.<\/p>\n

BRENT, YOU ALWAYS LOOK FORWARD TO RACES AT AIRBORNE.<\/p>\n

This is my home track. All my local people that I know, they go to this race. It means a lot to me and my team. There will be a big car count, for sure. This is definitely a bigger one for us. It’s a fun weekend.<\/p>\n

We used to have a lot of good times over there, and it’s just an awesome place. It’s only about 15 miles away across the lake (Lake Champlain), and I won three championships there when I was racing there every Saturday night. I really just have a lot of good memories from going there every week.<\/p>\n

WHAT KIND OF IMPACT DOES THE TRACK ITSELF HAVE ON 300 LAPS OF RACING?<\/p>\n

The track itself changes a lot during the race. Last year, I ran the second or third lane up and (winner Patrick Laperle) was on the bottom. At one point I drove by him in the lane I was in, and later on, he stayed right where he was and drove by me on the bottom because the track changed so much.<\/p>\n

There were two and a half to three lanes of really good racing. The track just changes a lot throughout the race. It’s sort of a different track for us, because we don’t have a lot of that usually on the tracks we go to where you have so many lanes and they change so much as the race goes on<\/p>\n

HOW IMPORTANT IS PIT STRATEGY GOING TO BE THIS WEEKEND?<\/p>\n

It’s very important timing-wise. Last year, we had a pretty good chance of leading the race after we pitted and Patrick had stayed out. He was running out of gas when we got a caution. He pitted and got gas and tires with 30 or 40 laps to go, and he was back to me and Brian (Hoar) so fast, I couldn’t believe it.<\/p>\n

It was pretty easy for him. It fell right into his hands. We’d stopped at the 125-lap mark or so, and we’d pretty much used our stuff at that point. So when you pit makes a big difference.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
