Behind the wheel of his No. 39 U.S. Army Chevrolet, it was a history making day for Newman; no NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver has started and won from the pole position in two races on the same weekend at NHMS.

Denny Hamlin, driver of the No. 11 FedEx/ Freight Toyota fought an ill-handling car all day but bounced back to finish third. “I can’t say enough about this 11 team,” said Hamlin. “They never gave up. We fought this car the whole day. We just kept working on it and made sure the fenders were on at the end.”
New Hampshire Motor Speedway officials expected a capacity crowd for Sunday’s LENOX Industrial Tools 301. As of 11 a.m. Saturday, approximately 2,000 tickets remained for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event. Track officials will hold a limited number of tickets for Sunday morning walk-up sales.

Ryan Newman capitalized on a relatively caution-free race to sail to his fourth straight NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race Saturday in the F.W. Webb 100 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Newman, who will also won the Coors Light Pole Award for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the 1.058-mile oval, led a race-high 61 laps. He passed Ron Silk on Lap 84 and won by 1.901 seconds over runner-up Todd Szegedy.

In addition to three consecutive wins at New Hampshire, he also won at Bristol Motor Speedway last year — all for crew chief Kevin Manion. Manion, from Boylston, is the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series crew chief for Jamie McMurray. However, NASCAR is taking a hard look at the restrictor plate that was used in Newman’s mount.

Todd Szegedy edged Silk at the finish line for second. Matt Hirschman and Doug Coby rounded out the top five. “I got a little bit close to Newman there on the last lap, Eric Beers gave me a tow to get me within range of him,” Points leader Rowan Pennink was sixth, followed by Eric Goodale, Ron Yuhas Jr., Ed Flemke Jr. and Woody Pitkat. The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will go from the largest track on the schedule to the smallest when it races next in the Lighthouse Mission 200 at the quarter-mile Riverhead (N.Y.) Raceway on Saturday, July 30.

Eric Berndt, in his first ever race at the 1.058 mile oval qualified the Berkley Auto Racing # 46 in the 18th spot on Thursday afternoon. During Saturday’s race he accomplished the goal set by him and the team of running a solid race to gain experience at the track and bring home a top-15 finish as he crossed the line in the 14th position. This Wednesday, the B.A.R. team head to their home track, the Seekonk Speedway for the 7th Annual Open Wheel Wednesday Modified Madness 100. Gates open at 4 p.m. with qualifying set for 7 p.m.

Joe Gibbs Racing development driver Max Gresham won the New England 125 from the pole on Friday, beating Brett Moffitt handily to take his first win at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and the fourth of his career. Gresham currently leads the East Series points race with four events remaining on the schedule.

The winner, who said in a radio interview earlier in the week that racing is in his blood, recently graduated from high school and is looking forward to a limited ARCA schedule later this season to add onto K&N Pro events. His grandfather owns Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson, Georgia.

The flag said it all when Kyle Busch took his victory lap around New Hampshire Motor Speedway Saturday. Holding a flag emblazoned with the number 100, Busch celebrated becoming the third driver to win 100 NASCAR national series races. He notched this historic win at the New England 200. The 26 year old Las Vegas, Nev. native continues to set records. Busch also captured his 49th NASCAR Nationwide Series win today. The victory tied him with Mark Martin for the most wins in NASCAR’s minor league series. Kyle wasn’t as lucky in Sunday’s Cup race and crashed out and ended up way back in the field

Pulling a rare double duty weekend, Kasey Kahne finished third for J.R. Motorsports behind the wheel of the No. 7 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet.”My car was bouncing pretty badly throughout the race, loose and tight and we just couldn’t get a handle on it,” said Kahne. “We missed a couple of wrecks and the crew did a good job. It ended up being a pretty good result.”

By Lou Modestino Ryan Newman only saw the view from the front at New Hampshire Motor Speedway this weekend, capturing the checkered flag in both the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series LENOX Industrial Tools 301 and the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour F.W.
