Haverhill, MA – – Salem, NH., native, Jim Bird, a long-time area auto
\nracing fabricator and crew member was seriously injured recently in a
\nmotor vehicle in Mooresville, N.C. Bird was riding a scooter home from
\nwork when struck by a motor vehicle in a city intersection on January 30.<\/p>\n
Bird was transported to a Charlotte Hospital where he was treated for
\nmultiple injuries including a shattered left hip, broken left femur, broken ribs,
\nserious facial lacerations and mild brain swelling.
\n
\nCurrently in rehabilitation, Bird has started the long road to recovery. Friends
\nback home have joined together and started a fundraiser to help Bird get
\nthrough the months ahead. Bird is expected to be out of work for an extended
\nperiod.<\/p>\n
Veteran racer Fred Skaff, of Haverhill, MA., made phone calls to other local
\nracers looking for contributions, donations, to help a fallen friend. It did not
\ntake long for support to fall in place.<\/p>\n
\u201cI called Bob Cabral, Dan Bezanson, Billy McCarthy, Roger Thibodeau, Mark
\nCaron, just to name a few, everyone I spoke too was on board,\u201d said Skaff.
\n\u201cIf we can get race fans and racers to contribute, it would be a huge help.<\/p>\n
Skaff has opened a checking account under \u201cFriends of Jim Bird\u201d with hopes
\npeople will remember the help Bird gave race teams over the years. \u201cJim was a
\nbig help to a lot of racers over the years,\u201d said Skaff. \u201cHe was very supportive of
\nStar, Lee, and Hudson Speedway. This a good opportunity for us to show Jim how
\nmuch we care,\u201d Skaff concluded.<\/p>\n
Jim Bird is the brother of former NASCAR crew chief Steve Bird and the son of
\nthe late Hudson Speedway and NESMRA official Amos Bird. <\/p>\n
