Bird was riding a scooter home from<br \/>\nwork when struck by a motor vehicle in a city intersection on January 30.<\/p>\n<p>Bird was transported to a Charlotte Hospital where he was treated for<br \/>\nmultiple injuries including a shattered left hip, broken left femur, broken ribs,<br \/>\nserious facial lacerations and mild brain swelling.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nCurrently in rehabilitation, Bird has started the long road to recovery. Friends<br \/>\nback home have joined together and started a fundraiser to help Bird get<br \/>\nthrough the months ahead. Bird is expected to be out of work for an extended<br \/>\nperiod.<\/p>\n<p>Veteran racer Fred Skaff, of Haverhill, MA., made phone calls to other local<br \/>\nracers looking for contributions, donations, to help a fallen friend. It did not<br \/>\ntake long for support to fall in place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI called Bob Cabral, Dan Bezanson, Billy McCarthy, Roger Thibodeau, Mark<br \/>\nCaron, just to name a few, everyone I spoke too was on board,\u201d said Skaff.<br \/>\n\u201cIf we can get race fans and racers to contribute, it would be a huge help.<\/p>\n<p>Skaff has opened a checking account under \u201cFriends of Jim Bird\u201d with hopes<br \/>\npeople will remember the help Bird gave race teams over the years. \u201cJim was a<br \/>\nbig help to a lot of racers over the years,\u201d said Skaff. \u201cHe was very supportive of<br \/>\nStar, Lee, and Hudson Speedway.
