42nd ACT Spring Green 116 Saturday
Waterbury, VT – The American Canadian Tour heads west to Airborne Park Speedway for the annual Spring Green Championship Stock Car race this Saturday night, May 14. The forty second (42nd) running of the historic event will begin with one of the largest contingents of front runners in the 30-year history of the sanctioning organization. Bobby Therrien from Hinesburg, VT holds a slim 12-point lead over a rebounding Nick Sweet, after the Barre, VT native’s spectacular win at the Merchants Bank 150, held at Thunder Road on May 8. Only twelve (12) points separate the top 2 teams after the first three events of the 2016 campaign. Just twenty-two (22) points separate the top five teams heading into the weekend at Airborne.
Therrien has led the chase by slim margins for the ten thousand dollar ($10,000.00) ACT Championship point check since his dominant win at the opening event held at the Oxford Plains Speedway, Oxford, ME in April. He followed that win up with a solid performance at Lee USA Speedway in New Hampshire in the rain dated New Hampshire Governor’s Cup 150 the following week. This past weekend at the Merchants Bank 150 Therrian, a former Thunder Road Flying Tiger Champion, raced home to a sixth place (6th) finish to keep the Therrien-Duto team at the top of point battle heading to Plattsburgh, NY and the annual Spring Green 116.
“It was fun to lead the points after the first race at Oxford, then Lee, and now after T-Road, I am heading to what really is one of my favorite tracks. I have some extra races at Airborne under my belt from a year ago, but with the competition this year, and all the teams that have kind of risen to challenge the front spots, this is turning into a really exciting race season. I just hope we can keep it up. Airborne is fast, we will have some really good Canadian teams join us, and I just need to keep finishing near the front, although obviously I would love to win at Airborne,” said Therrien.
The fast half mile at Airborne has become a favorite for the stars of the American Canadian Tour over the past few years. The competition is the best it has been since the early days of the Late Model division back in the middle and late 90’s. On any given race day, there appears to be as many as a dozen teams capable of winning.
“This is what we have all been working so hard to have happen with ACT Late Model racing. Having young teams, with veteran leadership showing the way, has resulted in their developing into the new breed of top contenders. Keeping the rules so that everyone is on a level playing field has been a challenge, but it looks like the work is beginning to pay off. It sure has been exciting so far for fans, teams, and really also us as officials. I would not be surprised to see our 4th different 2016 winner at the Spring Green at Airborne this weekend,” said Dean Gallison, Director of ACT Competition.
The 42nd Spring Green 116 lap event will post at 5:00pm at Airborne Park Speedway in Plattsburgh, NY this Saturday, May 14, 2016. Price for admission for adults is just $15.00, kids 6-12 are just $5.00 and a family ticket (2adults/2kids) is just $30.
