Cahoon Earns “King of the Mountain” Title as Laflamme Wins Barnburner

N. Woodstock, NH — St. Johnsbury, VT’s Stacy Cahoon showed he’s truly the ageless wonder of N. Woodstock’s White Mountain Motorsports Park by capturing the “King of the Mountain” title at WMMP Championship Night presented by C&S NAPA Auto Parts and Sanel NAPA on Saturday, September 26. The 62-year-old Cahoon sewed up his sixth Foley Oil & Propane Late Model crown with a fourth-place finish as youngster Christian Laflamme edged Mike “Beetle” Bailey for the victory.

Cahoon entered the 50-lap Late Model season finale with a three-point edge over Groveton’s Quinny Welch, who had won the previous five titles. The veteran started ninth and slowly picked his way through the field while Welch struggled to find the handle on his machine.

At the front, the event was a barnburner. Whitefield’s Laflamme grabbed the top spot at the initial green flag from polesitter Jon Savage. South Barre, VT’s Bailey quickly got the second spot and went to Laflamme’s inside. But while Bailey appeared to have the faster car, Laflamme held strong on the preferred high-side.

The duo went back and forth through a pair of mid-race cautions, unofficially swapping the lead six times at the start-finish line. Behind them, the lead pack reached as many as 10 cars, with Joel Hodgdon, Alby Ovitt, Jeff Marshall, and Jimmy Renfrew Jr. just some of the drivers taking their shots.

All the while, Cahoon methodically moved forward, knowing the title was his if he stayed in front of Welch. Cahoon was up to third when the final caution flew with four laps to go after Renfrew and Joey Laquerre spun in separate incidents. Bailey made one last charge at Laflamme, but Laflamme edged him at the checkered flag by 0.035 seconds for the victory.

Behind them, Marshall got by Cahoon in the final sprint for third. However, Cahoon’s fourth-place finish gave him the title by 13 points over Welch, who could do no better than ninth at the end. It is Cahoon’s sixth “King of the Mountain” but first since 2014. Andy Hill, Ovitt, Hodgdon, Matthew Morrill, and Renfrew also earned top-10 finishes.

Barton, VT’s Shane Sicard clinched a third straight Wells River Chevrolet Flying Tiger championship in the best way possible by winning his fifth feature of the 2020 season. Sicard started 10th in the 35-lap event and inherited the second spot when Ryan Ware and Michael Clark tangled racing for the lead just before the halfway signal.

On the restart, Sicard got the jump over Plainfield’s Matthew Potter and quickly pulled away. Number-two point man Jaden Perry of Hardwick, VT eventually moved up to second, but Sicard was long gone, winning the feature by a straightaway and snagging the title along with it.

East Thetford’s Brandon Gray finished third in his second career Flying Tiger start. Matthew Potter, Michael Potter, Jason Woodard, Kasey Beattie, Ware, Jamon Perry, and Tanner Woodard rounded out the top-10.

It was father-son night in the Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank Strictly Stock Mini’s with Bethlehem’s Dustin Jackson taking the win and his dad Brett capturing the championship. Dustin dodged an opening lap skirmish when Adam Sicard threw a shoe entering turn one. He then quickly got to the top spot, passing Les Washburn for the lead on lap four and pulling away after lap-11 caution for Jason Potter’s spin.

Jackson appeared to slow in the closing laps, letting a four-car battle for second close to his rear bumper. The leader rediscovered his mojo, though, and hung on for his fourth win of the year.

Littleton’s Jack Hayes caught Passumpsic, VT’s Jamie Ball for second. Washburn and Addie McDaniel came in fourth and fifth.

Brett Jackson crossed the line sixth with sparks flying off the right front of his car. However, he had already all but sewed up the title when challenger Tyler Thompson was involved in a hard crash during qualifying. Tim Corey, Todd Derrington, Scott Senecal, and Jarred Ainsworth completed the top-10.

Easton’s Jason Wyman came from behind to win the 7-Eleven Dwarf Car championship. Wyman entered the feature 13 points behind four-time winner Colby Bourgeois. However, Bourgeois and Tommy Smither got together racing for the third spot on lap nine. The contact broke a tie rod on Bourgeois’ car, and he ended up losing five laps making repairs.

With the door open, Wyman seized it. Amidst several cautions sprinkled throughout the 25-lap feature, Wyman went at with Lincoln’s “Downtown” Bobby Brown for the lead. He appeared to have taken the lead on the 18th lap only for a caution for Paul Marsan’s spin wiped out the pass.

A spin by Jeremy Labrecque with three laps to go set up a shootout to the finish. Brown nosed out Wyman by 0.020 seconds for the win while Wyman beat Bourgeois for the title by five points. Smithers, Dave Gyger, and Chad Dufour finished third through fifth in the feature.

Gilmanton’s Thomas Smithers VI capped the Dads 4 By Tool & Supply Kids Truck season with his sixth win of the year. Smithers had a bumper in front of Glover, VT’s Owen Rogers when a pair of cautions came out on lap eight of the 15-lap feature. Once the dust settled, Smithers ran away to snare another victor’s trophy.

West Danville, VT’s Kamden Potter recovered from an early spin to beat out Rogers for second. Damion Sicard and Dominic Warren completed the top-five.

The White Mountain Motorsports Park racing season is now complete. Whether a Banquet of Champions will be held remains to be seen depending on state health and safety requirements. The 2021 schedule will be announced in late November or early December.
