The historic .455-mile short track, Caraway Speedway in Sophia, North Carolina, has recently been acquired by racer and businessman Robert Tyler. This acquisition sets the stage for significant changes as Tyler plans to take full control of operations, particularly in preparation for upcoming events like the North-South Shootout in November.

The track has a rich history, having been operated by the Hackett family since 1977, with Darren Hackett taking the reins in 2010. Tyler’s transition into ownership is fueled by his background in the events space and his desire to merge his business acumen with short track racing. He has been actively pursuing this opportunity for some time, aligning with Darren Hackett in early conversations regarding the sale.

Tyler intends to transform Caraway Speedway by focusing heavily on the fan experience. He plans to implement improvements that prioritize customer service, including upgrading food options—such as fresh barbecue wings and trackside suites—and introducing services like DoorDash for parking areas. His goal is to ensure fans have an engaging experience beyond just watching the races.

For racers, Tyler is also implementing changes aimed at streamlining operations. He plans to introduce an expedited entry process, allowing drivers to drop off their cars the day before a race and return the next day, eliminating lengthy sign-in procedures. Furthermore, he aims to foster a better racing environment by focusing on reducing cautions and creating a more competitive atmosphere for the Late Model Stock community.
