Todd Szegedy remains a legendary figure in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, having achieved numerous accolades including being a series champion and Rookie of the Year. His history is also marked by participation in the prestigious North-South Shootout event, where he competed five times between 2003 and 2008.
While his time behind the wheel may have taken a pause, Szegedy’s competitive spirit is far from extinguished. For decades, he transitioned his career, working for Montanari Fuels where he evolved from an oil delivery driver to an HVAC technician, finding that every job presents its own unique set of challenges.
Today, Szegedy channels that competitive energy into new pursuits. As an avid cyclist, he competes in road, gravel, and mountain bike events, recently completing a demanding 50-plus-mile mountain bike race in just one hour and twenty-nine minutes. He finds this amateur cycling to be his current racing fix.
Despite stepping away from full-time competition, Szegedy remains deeply connected to the Modified community, staying in touch with figures like Teddy Hodgdon. He fondly recalls winning the Whelen Modified Tour championship alongside Don Barker and the Barker family, emphasizing that chemistry and teamwork were key to that success. He still misses the art of driving and hopes for the opportunity to return to the track, perhaps at Stafford Motor Speedway.
