Qualifying for the Baldwin, Evans & Jarzombek 77 event at Riverhead Raceway was abruptly halted Friday evening when a severe pop-up storm rolled in. Dangerous lightning and heavy rain forced officials to suspend track activities, leading to significant rescheduling for the planned competition.
The event, which featured the Buzz Chew NASCAR Modifieds, was postponed and rescheduled for next Friday, August 14th. This delay also extended the annual Cromarty Wall of Champions induction ceremony for Howie Brode and Danny Grennan until the new date.
Despite the weather interruption, some qualifying times were recorded before the deluge. Owen Grennan of Glen Cove set the fastest time in qualifying with a lap of 11.654, earning the HighMark Building Efficiency Fast Time award. Justin Brown of Manorville followed closely with a time of 11.666.
Track management is working to coordinate make-up dates for the affected events, including the Late Model, Super Pro Truck, and Eddie Partridge Vintage All Star races. This marks the fifth time in 2026 that Riverhead Raceway has had to postpone or alter parts of a show due to severe weather.
