The Mohegan Sun 100 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway ended in wild fashion when Justin Bonsignore lost the lead in the final corner to Tyler Rypkema as Rypkema slammed into the outside wall losing his front right tire just feet before the finish line.
The Mohegan Sun 100 will follow the Team EJP 175 NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series race on Doubleheader Saturday, Aug. 22.
New England’s only NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) weekend is set for Aug. 21-23 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS). Earlier this year, NCS drivers were asked what they would look forward to most when visiting NHMS for the Dollar Tree 301, and while they are focused on landing in victory lane with Loudon the Lobster on Sunday, many will also be paying attention to Saturday’s Mohegan Sun 100 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour (NWMT) race, which is a fan-favorite of the weekend.
Ross Chastain, Driver of the No. 1 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet, said, “I’m gonna watch the modifieds. Modifieds is like, if nothing else, you have to watch the modified race. They draft on a flat one-mile track. I don’t understand how it happens, but they have a ton of power. They’re still restricted there a little bit, but they are bump drafting with open wheels. It’s crazy.”
Kyle Larson, Driver of the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, commented, “If I was going as a race fan, I would definitely be watching the modified race. I feel like that’s always an exciting one. I’ve never gone in the stands to watch it, so that’d be fun.”
Josh Berry, Driver of the No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford, stated, “I love watching the modified race there. They always put on a great show.”
Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Driver of the No. 47 Hyak Motorsports Chevrolet, said, “At New Hampshire Motor Speedway, you got to make sure you make it to a modified race at some point. They put on a great show at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.”
Ryan Blaney, Driver of the No. 12 Team Penske Ford, noted, “They have a lot of great local short tracks. Big modified fans up there, too. That’s a huge area for that. So it’s fun to go there with the mods.”
Ty Dillon, Driver of the No. 10 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet, added, “If you’re coming out to New Hampshire Motor Speedway, I think you want to watch the modified race.”
New England’s only NCS weekend is Aug. 21-23 at NHMS. On-track action kicks off Friday with practice and qualifying for the NWMT and NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series (NCTS) plus SIG SAUER Academy Dirt Duels at The Flat Track. The action continues on Doubleheader Saturday with the Team EJP 175 NCTS race and the Mohegan Sun 100 NWMT race following NCS practice and qualifying. The on-track action culminates Sunday with the Dollar Tree 301 NCS race.
