Barre, VT – The rk Miles Street Stocks kicked off feature racing action on Vermont Lottery Governor’s Cup night. Rookie Owen Dupuis led ‘Flyin’ Fred Fleury across the line under the initial green flag and kept his foot to the firewall from then on. Fleury backtracked early allowing Kyle MacAskill and Riley Morris to close in on the top three positions. Late in the race, Paul Rocheleau drove up to third around Morris and then second around MacAskill with five laps remaining. Time was not on his side with freshman competitor Owen Dupuis too far to catch en-route to his first career victory with Rocheleau taking second over Riley Morris.
Kyle Gravel showed the way early in the Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying Tiger feature before Chris LaForest called out the lap 6 caution to re-rack the field once again. Second-place runner Jason Pelkey slipped back through the pack on the restart, leaving Gravel to fend off the crazy eights of Mike Billado and Jaiden Del Toro. Eric Messier met the widowmaker frontstretch wall after a flat right front and collected Robert Gordon and Erin Beaudry in the process to call the second caution on lap 25.
Gravel took over the restart lead handily and drove off but the picture began to change with ten laps remaining. Billado and Luke Peters reeled Gravel back in with Peters jumping to the outside groove and run the highline around Billado. In the end, Kyle Gravel prevailed to his first career Tiger win with Luke Peters besting Mike Billado on the podium charge.
Jason Corliss earned the pole position in plus/minus qualifying action with a ‘+3’ against Kaiden Fisher’s ‘+2’ and looked shot from a cannon in the opening circuits. Corliss thundered away with the early lead as Justin Prescott, Fisher, Brandon Gray and Nick Sweet kept pace behind him. After a strong run, everything went south for Prescott with a broken throttle arm ending his day with the lap 61 caution.
Corliss and Gray kept it interesting out front with the #00VT holding tight to the rear bumper of the #66VT around the high groove of the Nation’s Site of Excitement. Meanwhile, NASCAR Cup Series winner Ryan Preece maintained a lead lap position until the very late goings as Corliss and Gray kept all the momentum at the head of the pack. With a 75-lap green flag run in the second half of the event, Jason Corliss made history as he crossed the stripe to take the Vermont Lottery Governor’s Cup! With the win, Corliss became the first two-time Squier Cup presented by Milton CAT champion, the first five-time victor of the Governor’s Cup and joined the exclusive 40-wins club at Thunder Road!
