West Haven, VT-One of the most popular drivers to ever compete at Devil’s Bowl Speedway was honored on Saturday night as the Sunoco Sportsman Modifieds battled in the Charlie LaDuc Memorial 54 presented by Brown’s Quarried Slate and Brown’s Farmstand and Orchard. With the points championships due to be crowned in just two weeks, the racing in all divisions was hotly contested.
No division was more intense than the Sunoco Sportsman Modifieds as the green flag dropped on the Charlie LeDuc Memorial 54. The event became a battle of attrition as 26 cars started the race, but only 12 were still in contention at the end. Ashton Pierson led the first 11 laps before being overtaken by Randy Ryan, who was sitting on a very fast piece. Ryan led the next 12 circuits before mechanical woes ended his night. Adam Pierson inherited the point and kept it until lap 51 when Scott Towslee powered around him to seize control. Towslee led the final four trips around the "New England's Fastest Dirt Track” to score the biggest win of his career. “The Adam Bomb” chased Towslee across the line to finish second. Josh Sunn rallied from an early incident to finish third, followed by AJ Munger and Brett Sears. Sears earned the Elmo’s Pit Stop Hard Charger award for gaining 21 spots, from 26th to fifth.
The top contenders for the track championship in the Northern Refrigeration Novice Sportsman Modified classification are barely separated in the standings by a piece of paper. The margin for error is razor-thin. Points leader Rob Steves didn’t have his best night of the season, but he salvaged a sixth-place finish in the 20-lap main event, managing to finish one position in front of his closest competitor, Mark McGinnis. Meanwhile, Rob Steele, who entered the night 36 points behind Steves, gained significant ground by collecting the win. Steele started outside of Jenna Zak on the front row, took the lead right from the start, and held it for the next 16 laps. Gage Provencher slipped underneath Steele on a lap 16 restart to take the lead, but Steele was determined. He drove back around Provencher in turn four on the final lap and won the drag race to the finish line. Provencher, Logan Carter, Eric Dingman, and Derrik Emigh rounded out the top five.
After a few weeks away from racing, John Smith continued his triumphant return, winning his second consecutive Friend Construction 500c Mini Sprint feature. Scott Bachand led the opening seven laps, but Smith was on the move from the sixth starting spot. Smith overtook Bachand on lap eight and cruised away to extend his late-season hot streak. Tyler Whittemore made a late pass on Bachand to finish second. Bachand was third, points leader Levi Cram fourth, and Andy Quenneville fifth.
Quinton Bishop enjoyed visiting victory lane so much last week that he decided to do it again. Bishop won his first career feature last Saturday night and made it back-to-back victories in the 15-lap Low Handicap Mini Stock event. David LaBarge set the early pace, leading the first 10 laps, but it was clear Bishop had a car worthy of contending. Bishop overtook LaBarge on lap 11 and held off a late charge from Jerry Jordan Sr. to earn the top spot on the podium. Jordan, LaBarge, Maverick Mitchell, and Jayde Pope also recorded top five finishes.
In the Mini Stock High Handicap feature, Chris Charbonneau drove to a convincing win. Cody Dion led until lap six when Charbonneau worked his way around him and was unchallenged the rest of the way as the field went green to checkers without mishap. Kaleb Shepard and Bert Ouellette, who put on a thrilling battle for second, followed Charbonneau across the stripe. Dion placed fourth and Jon Jordan fifth.
The evening concluded with the wild and crazy 40-lap Enduro. Andrew Lopes started on the tail end of the field but didn't waste any time charging to the front. Lopes launched from dead last on the grid, but was up to third before the race was 5 laps old. Once he took the lead, Lopes began to run away, but Walter Scram was in pursuit. Scram was close enough to show Lopes his front bumper in turn one late in the race, but Lopes withstood the challenge to win his second Enduro of the week after taking the checkers at Airborne Park two nights earlier. Zeb Provost placed third, Kody Vermilyea fourth, and Trevor Jaques fifth.
This Saturday and Sunday, September 5th and 6th, Devil’s Bowl Speedway will host its marquee event of the summer, the Fabian Earth Moving Vermont 200 weekend. On Saturday, all weekly divisions will be in action. The Sunoco Sportsman Modifieds will compete in a "Win & You're in Vermont 200 " 25-lap draw race. The Limited Sportsman will race in a "Win & You're in Vermont" draw race. After the racing, stay around for the annual famous BBQ - Bonfire - Music & Fireworks. Sunday will feature the running of the Fabian Earth Moving Vermont 200 with $10,067 to win, plus lap money. The Friend Construction 500cc Mini Sprints, Novice Sportsman Modifeds, and Renegades will also be on the card. Grandstand gates open Saturday at 2:30 p.m., with racing at 4:00 p.m. Sunday grandstand gates open at 3:30 p.m., with racing at 5 p.m. Grandstand admission is $25 for the entire weekend. Infield parking is $35 for the weekend. Kids 12 and under are free. Pit admission is $50 for the weekend. Don’t miss it!
