NASCAR has announced a 16-car entry list for the upcoming Whelen Modified Tour Toyota Mod Classic 150 scheduled for Saturday at Oswego Speedway. This small field size holds significant historical weight for the series, as it would mark the third time in Whelen Modified Tour history that an event has been run with 16 or fewer competitors.
To put this into perspective, the lowest car count ever seen in the series history was 15 cars at Langley Speedway in Hampton, Va., on August 26, 2023. The only other race in history with a 16-car field was back in 1985 at Catamount Speedway in Milton, VT.
The trend toward smaller fields is notable, especially in recent years. Since 2023, six Whelen Modified Tour events have featured 18 cars or fewer, including two races held at Oswego Speedway. This indicates a growing trend toward tighter fields within the competition.
If this 16-car field materializes, it would also impact the season averages. It would drop the projected average car count for the 2026 season to 23.8 vehicles per event. This would put the series on pace to set a new all-time record low car count for a full season, surpassing the lowest average of 24.0 recorded in the 2024 season.
