West Haven, VT-Brian Calabrese has competed at several racetracks during his 2026 campaign, but for the last few weeks his focus has centered on one event in particular. A race that he circles on his calander every year, but has yet to solve. The Johnstown, New York campaigner can now scratch the Fabian Earth Moving Vermont 200 off of his bucket list, as he cruised to victory in the annual premier event at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Saturday night. Calabrese not only collected the $10,000 winner’s purse but also pocketed a large portion of the sponsored lap money.
Kevin Chaffee and Brett Sears led the field of 36 of the best Sportsman Modified drivers in the Northeast to the green flag, with Chaffee leading the first two laps. Calabrese came out on a mission using a two for one pass around Brett Sears and Caleb Durgan to move to the second spot and then powering passed Chaffee on lap three to take control. By lap 10 Calabrese had caught the back of the field and was forced to navigate lapped traffic. Calabrese didn’t tip toe through the cars in front of him, as he stayed aggressive, driving through the middle of two cars on a couple of occasions. Josh Sunn had a fast hot rod as well and attempted to put pressure on Calabrese in the early stages before having to pit after suffering a flat tire.
After a long sequence of green flag racing the yellow flag came out for the halfway break with Calabrese leading Joey Scarborough and Scott Towslee. Calabrese chose to pull onto to pit road during the intermission to service his machine, handing the point to Scarborough. Calabrese restarted fifth, but the yellow flew on the second lap after the restart when Scarborough’s car rolled to a stop on the backstretch. Towslee assumed the lead for a handful of laps, but Calabrese was on the attack again. Calabrese regained the lead after a restart on lap 139 and was never challenged again. Towslee, who collected the $200 Bill McGaffin, Show Stopper fast qualifier bonus finished second, nearly a straightaway behind the winner. Chaffee rallied from an incident early in the race that put him a lap down, clawing his way back to third after receiving the “Lucky Dog” spot. Dave Camara and Caleb Durgan rounded out the top five. Another notable finish was Sunn’s recovery coming from a lap off the pace to cross the line sixth.
Part of the undercard Sunday was the second visit of the summer to “The Bowl” for the Renegades. The weekly division at the Airborne Park Speedway has seen Billy Thwaits dominate, and that didn’t change on this day. Thwaits won both parts of the two-segment event to extend his overall win total to 10 in a row. Thwaits fired from deep on the grid in both races but rapidly sliced his way through the pack to claim decisive wins. In the first segment, Andrew Fitzgerald, Nathaniel Guay, Josh Bussino, and Chris Murray followed “Billy Bullet” across the finish line. In the second segment, Bussino, Murray, Guay, and Fitzgerald shuffled positions but still finished in the top five.
In the Northern Refrigeration 20-lap feature, 11-year-old Logan Carter scored his first career win. The youngster from Mayfield, New York launched from the outside of the front row, took the lead and never gave it up, rolling to a convincing victory. The most dramatic moment for Carter came on the closing lap when the yellow lights came on, setting up a restart and a green-white-checkers situation. It didn’t faze Carter as he quickly pounded the gas pedal and outraced Mark McGinnis and James McLellan to the stripe with the poise of a more experienced wheelman.
The Friend Construction 500cc Mini Sprints battled in a three-segment event, with part one on Saturday and the final two races on Sunday. Alex Reed won two of the three segments to capture the overall victory. Points leader Levi Cram also picked up a segment win. On Saturday, the Sunoco Sportsman Modifieds had an opportunity to lock in a guaranteed spot in Sunday’s Vermont 200, with 21 competitors taking the green flag for the 20-lap “Win and You’re in Event.” Jimmy Ryan and Eric Shaw sat on the front row, with Shaw looking strong early. Marty Kelly III was also piloting a fast piece. Josh Sunn, who has been consistent all summer and is currently second in points, charged from the sixth position on the grid to assume control on lap 11. Sunn fought off challenges from Kelly, AJ Munger, and Adam Pierson to score his first win of the season, earn the automatic spot in Sunday’s main event, and quickly accepted it. Munger, Kelly, Pierson, and points leader Joey Scarborough rounded out the top five.
The O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman drivers also had a chance to earn a bid to the Vermont 200, and they put on an entertaining show. Bobbi Hults led the early laps of the 40-lap event, but Kamden Duffy was on the move. Once Duffy grabbed the lead, he seemed to be in control, but Anthony Alger had other plans. Duffy navigated the outside line, with Alger preferring the short way around. The duo exchanged the lead on a few occasions before Alger drove under Duffy on lap 39 to secure the victory. Behind Alger and Duffy, Gary English placed third, Aiden Benoure fourth, and Cody O’Brien fifth.
In the Northern Refrigeration 15-lap feature, Matt Little came away with a decisive win. Rob Steele led some early laps before Little seized control on lap five and led the rest of the way. Little ran his customary outside line to hold off the rest of the pack for his second win of 2026. Gavin Fleury was second, Stephen Bushey third, Steele fourth, and Mark McGinnis 5th.
Points leader Bradford Cram collected his elusive first win of the season in the 15-lap Stove Depot Crown Vic feature. Cram fired from the outside of row one, took the lead early, and held off the challenges of Eric Friend and Josh Muir. Friend and Muir followed Cram across the line, with Scott Richner fourth and Chad Merrill fifth.
Jerry Jordan Jr. dominated the Low Handicap Mini Stock 12-lap feature for his second trip to victory lane on the season. Jordan started on the front row, took the lead quickly, and fended off Ron Alger and Quinton Bishop. Dave Labarge and Jerry Jordan Sr. completed the top five.
Tyler Bell kept his 8b car home in the garage and brought his No. 9 car that he usually runs at Airborne Park out to a try at “The Bowl.” The move paid off as Bell survived the wild 15-lap Mini Stock High Handicap evening finale. A scary wreck on the frontstretch created a red flag situation, but after the delay, Bell outdueled Jon Jordan in the closing laps to win for the second time during his 2026 campaign. Jordan finished second, Jake Fountain third, Kaleb Shepard fourth, and Cody Dion fifth.
The 2026 season at Devil’s Bowl Speedway concludes on Saturday, September 12th with “Championship Night.” Track championships will be crowned in all weekly divisions.
Grandstand and infield admission opens at 4:30 p.m. Racing is at 6 p.m. Grandstand admission is $15. Infield admission is $25. Kids 12 and under are free. Pit admission is $30 for members and $40 for non-members.
