The New England Supermodified Series season concluded at Lee USA Speedway’s Oktoberfest, featuring a dramatic finish that saw Jon McKennedy outgun Jeffrey Battle in a thrilling five-lap duel for the VoteReady.com 50.
While McKennedy secured his third NESS victory of the season, Battle’s second-place finish proved to be the more significant result, allowing the Dunstable, Mass. specialist to clinch his second consecutive NESS championship. Battle finished ahead of P.J. Stergios and Dan Bowes, who placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
The race saw Derek Griffith, a Super Late Model ace, earn the pole position and lead early before being caught by Battle. McKennedy, starting tenth, needed just enough time to catch the leaders, and the three competitors battled wheel-to-wheel for the final five laps before McKennedy edged out Battle by 0.218 seconds on the final lap.
The 13-race NESS schedule wrapped up with McKennedy’s eleventh career NESS win. Battle’s focused season, which featured no finishes worse than fourth, cemented his title defense, marking a dominant run in the big-block Supermodified division.
