Big changes are underway at Devil's Bowl Speedway as the historic Vermont dirt track continues one of its most ambitious offseason improvement projects in decades. The project includes the complete removal of the pavement beneath the racing surface, a major reconstruction of the grandstand area, the addition of a new Victory Lane experience, and plans for new VIP suites overlooking the speedway.
The first phase involves removing the pavement that was installed beneath the clay racing surface in 2010. Over the years, moisture trapped between the pavement and clay has created challenges with track preparation, particularly during certain weather conditions. Removing the pavement will allow the speedway to establish a true clay racing surface, with the goal of providing more consistent track conditions and improved racing for competitors and fans alike.
Rather than hauling away the ground-up pavement, the speedway is putting the material to good use in another major improvement project. The original grandstands, which date back to 1967, have now been completely removed. The seating structures will be relocated approximately 15 feet farther from the racing surface and elevated roughly three feet, providing improved sightlines and a better overall viewing experience for race fans.
Another major addition will be an all-new Victory Lane designed to bring winning drivers closer to the fans. A new access road from turn four, behind the scoreboard, will allow winning race cars to enter the spectator area near the planned VIP suites. Drivers will then make their way in front of the grandstands, where they can celebrate their victories alongside the fans.
The speedway is also planning new VIP suites in the turn four area, creating additional opportunities for fans and businesses to enjoy racing from a unique vantage point. Speedway owner and promoter Mike Bruno says the improvements are about more than just the upcoming racing season. "We've been talking about making some of these changes for years, and now we're finally in a position to make them happen," Bruno said. "Our goal is to improve the racing surface, give our fans a better experience, and continue investing in the future of Devil's Bowl Speedway."
Bruno also emphasized that the renovations are a work in progress and that not every improvement will be completed before opening day. "Keep in mind, this is a work in progress. Not everything we're planning will be completed by opening day, and some improvements will continue throughout the summer. We're taking on a lot, and we want to make sure it's done right," Bruno explained.
Bruno also stressed that a project of this magnitude would not be possible without the dedication of the speedway's employees and the generosity and support of several local businesses and individuals. "We wouldn't be able to take on a project like this without our dedicated employees and the tremendous help we've received from Ron Fabian of Fabian Earthmoving, Charlie Brown of Brown's Quarried Slate, and Dave Camara of Camara Slate. Dave has generously provided the use of his bulldozer, while Charlie has helped us with the rollers needed to move the grandstands, along with sharing his knowledge and ideas on the groundwork involved in this project. Their willingness to help, along with the hard work and support from Ron Fabian and his crew, has made a tremendous difference. We're extremely grateful to everyone who has stepped up to help make this happen."
With its long history in Vermont motorsports, Devil's Bowl Speedway is looking toward the future while continuing to build on the traditions that have made it a favorite destination for racers and fans. "There's still a lot of work ahead of us, but I'm excited about what we're building!" Bruno added.
Fans can follow the progress of the renovations through the official Devil's Bowl Speedway Facebook page, where additional updates, photos and videos will be shared as work continues.
