NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell recently provided an update on the state of the sport during a news conference held at Homestead-Miami Speedway. O’Donnell highlighted several positive trends, noting that the industry has seen increased attendance, a growing social media presence, and significant investment from new brands. He summarized the 2026 season with the statement: “NASCAR has encouraging momentum, but we have work to do.”
Key developments discussed included the return of car manufacturer Dodge to the NASCAR Cup Series, which occurred less than a week before the season finale. Furthermore, all three national touring series adopted a multi-race Chase format this year, which O’Donnell felt successfully put the focus back on week-in and week-out driver performance.
The competition across the series is heating up. In the Cup Series, Kyle Larson has established a dominant position, needing a 28th-place finish in Sunday’s Championship Race to secure his third title. Meanwhile, the NASCAR O’Reilly Series features a five-driver free-for-all, with veteran Justin Allgaier holding a slim 22-point lead in the Chase standings. The NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series also had a title battle brewing between Kaden Honeycutt and Layne Riggs.
O’Donnell concluded by stressing the importance of expanding the television audience for all three national series. He emphasized that the industry is focused on a five-year plan that includes competition, international expansion, and at-track fan development, signaling a period of strong alignment and excitement for the future of NASCAR.
