Sweeps Sportsman Modified and Sprint Car races

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Bobby Hackel blew the fans and the competition away at the Dirt Track at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Sunday, August 14, becoming just the second stock car driver in the track’s 50-season history to win in two divisions on the same night. The 21 year-old from Rensselaer, N.Y., swept both the 35-lap feature for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Sportsman Modifieds and the 30-lap race for the Sprint Cars of New England. Also winning at the Liberty Street Discount Beverage & Deli Night event were Josh Coonradt and Mike Ryan.

Hackel got his work started in the Central Vermont Motorcycles Sportsman Modifieds, when he came from 13th starting position to challenge leader Kevin Chaffee of Bradford, Vt., at lap 13. It was West Sand Lake, N.Y.’s Kenny Tremont Jr. to make the first move, though, as he passed both Hackel and Chaffee to take command at lap 17. Hackel followed Tremont through traffic for the next 17 laps, with Tremont’s lead growing and shrinking as the pair navigated lapped traffic.

Duprey by inches in Renegades; Conroy tops fun Mini Stock race

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Kenny Tremont Jr. narrowly escaped from a big pileup to win on the special “Whelen Wednesday” double-points Mid-Season Championship stock car event on the Dirt Track at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on August 10. In spite of major damage to his car, the seven-time Devil’s Bowl champion ran to his second win of the season after a wild 35-lap race. Bill Duprey and Chris Conroy also scored victories during the night, which was presented by NASCAR Whelen All-American Series title sponsor Whelen Engineering.
Three caution flags slowed the pace of the Central Vermont Motorcycles Sportsman Modified race in the first three laps. Tremont, of West Sand Lake, N.Y., was involved in the most serious incident, which stacked his car up with those of top championship point drivers Justin Comes, Derrick McGrew, and rookie Justin Severance. All but Comes were able to continue, though the body on Tremont’s car was severely damaged. (more…)

Barre, VT – Scott Dragon of Milton literally caught Nick Sweet of Barre at the finish line to capture the makeup of the rained-out Governor’s Cup, and Eric Badore of Milton took advantage of rookie Marcel Gravel’s late-race misfortune to earn the Thunder Road Late Model feature on Fairpoint Communications Night.

Sweet dominated for most of the Governor’s Cup, running away from the 29-car field from the pole position at the green flag to take the lead, which he held for the first 136 laps of the 150-lap event. Dragon got better as the race went on, moving into the top 3 on lap 115, then claiming second place on the 128th lap, then moving in front on a lap 141 restart.

Sweet went back in front three laps after that restart following the fourth caution of the race. Dragon continued the chase, caught Sweet coming out of turn 4 on the final lap, then finished 1/100th of a second in front of Sweet as the two drivers made contact at the finish line.

Barre, VT – Shawn Fleury of Middlesex led from start to finish to pick up his first victory of the season in the Thunder Road Late Models on CVMC ExpressCARE Night.

Starting on the pole, Fleury jumped into an immediate lead over rookie Marcel Gravel of Wolcott, who started on the outside of the front row. Fleury widened his margin as Gravel and veteran Dave Whitcomb of Essex Jct. battled side-by-side for second place. Gravel, who led 38 laps of last week’s feature before falling victim to handling problems late in the race, held onto second, while Whitcomb finished third.

There were no yellow flags in the 50-lap event, and the top three ran away from the rest of the field, which was bottled up behind a battle for fourth place between Jason Allen of Barre and Matt White of Northfield. Allen crossed the finish line in fourth, but was disqualified after failing post-race inspection. Phil Scott of Middlesex, Nick Sweet of Barre, Scott Dragon of Milton, Tyler Cahoon of Danville, Jason Corliss of Barre, White, and Kyle Pembroke of Montpelier rounded out the top 10.
