ACT Goodyear Speedweeks Cup Race Report

Multi-time ACT Late Model Tour champion Brian Hoar of Williston, Vt., finished sixth in the first race of the inaugural ACT Goodyear Speedweeks Cup at New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., on Sunday, February 13. A seven-time series champion, Hoar started seventh in the 27-car field and moved as high as fifth on a mid-race restart. He never ran lower than ninth place at any point in the event, but he did suffer damage to the right side of the No. 37 GossCars.com Dodge Charger that he said likely had an effect on tire wear and handling. Hoar will join the field for a second straight night on Monday, February 14, with another 100-lap event as part of the 45th annual World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing.

BRIAN, TALK ABOUT YOUR NIGHT.

It was a rough night. We’d go forward a couple of spots and then backward a couple of spots all night it seemed like. We got caught up with a couple of guys — banging doors and what not — and this is such a momentum track that when you do that the guys from behind you just shoot by like nothing.

(Pole-sitter Mark Lamberton) got really loose right from the get-go, right in Turn 2 on the first lap and got everything all jumbled up. That happened several times. Another car body-slammed me. It just seemed that there were a couple of drivers out there tonight that we haven’t been racing with and don’t necessarily race by the ‘ACT Code.’ It was a bit of a rough one for us.

DO YOU NEED TO MAKE BIG CHANGES FOR MONDAY NIGHT’S RACE?

The car got really tight on us at the end, but I’m pretty certain all the beating and banging didn’t help anything. We were fast in the heat race after doing a lot of work in practice. We made huge improvements there and were pushing (second-place finisher Patrick Laperle) around the track in the heat race.

Overall, we just need to make a few (minor) adjustments and we’ll be good. We’ve just got to do a little bit of damage repair, and we should be all set.
