Hermon’s Mike Hopkins took off from the outside pole position in the 50 lap Sinclair Towing Service feature for the Dysart’s Late Models Saturday night at Speedway 95 and won the event by almost half a track over the rest of the field. The real action took place in the battle for second place where Phil Richardson of Hermon and Brenton Parritt of Steuben battled for second and third over the last half of the race. Parritt finally got by Richardson on lap 42 to take the second spot at the finish. Richardson had to settle for third after winning last week’s main event. The battle for fourth and fifth wasn’t decided until the 44th circuit when Nick Jenkins of Milo finally took fourth from Duane Seekins of Stockton Springs, who finished in fifth. Because of the torrid pace set by Hopkins on his way the win, and the last caution period coming on lap 18, only 8 of the 19 starters finished on the lead lap.
Maine State Lottery Sportsman action saw Shane Tatro of Holden chase down leader Steve Moulton, also of Holden, and passed him for the lead on the 23rd lap of the 25 lap feature. Tatro had to overcome Moulton’s substantial lead as well as Moulton’s efforts to keep Tatro behind in order to finally make the pass in the closing laps. Moulton finished a close second, with pole sitter Kris Matchett of Skowhegan finishing in third. Fourth went to Lamoine’s Derek Mingo with Brad Norris of Ellsworth finishing fifth.
After a side by side battle with early leader Andrew McLaughlin of Harrington, Adam Chadbourne of Woolwich made the winning pass just past the half way point on lap 13, and cruised to victory in his first appearance of the season. Placing third in the caution free 25 lap feature was Jim Carr Jr. of Clifton. Shelby Kimball of Cornville finished fourth, followed by her younger brother Matt Kimball, also of Cornville in fifth.
In the Sport-Fours, Andrew Crosby of Hermon held off a strong charge from Fred Ashmore Jr. of Hancock who came from a 12th place starting position to challenge Crosby for the lead at the end of the 20 lap feature. Crosby admitted in his victory lane interview that if the race was much longer, it would have been Ashmore, and not him, carrying the flag. Ashmore came over the stripe in second with Carmel’s Ted Ryder finishing third in the 18 car starting field. Fourth went to Carmel’s Becky Elston with Keith Ogden of Holden finishing in fifth.
After winning the Sport-Four event earlier in the evening, Andrew Crosby wasn’t as lucky in his Bomber division car as he lost the lead and was sent to the rear of the field for twice jumping the flag on a restart. Mark Sawyer of Corinth benefited from Crosby’s miscue and rolled to his first win of the season. Chris Carroll of Greenbush was awarded second when Carmel’s Jeremy Scott, who placed second in the race, was disqualified in post race inspection for illegal suspension modifications. Third went to Mark Lane of Newport after David Ogden of Milford was also disqualified in the tech shack for having illegal suspension components on his car. Russell Blenkhorn of Bucksport then claimed the fourth spot with Crosby racing from the rear of the field after his penalty to finish fifth.
Racing continues at Speedway 95 on Wednesday June 20 at 7:00 with the Varney Buick-GMC-Mazda’s Wacky Wednesday show, and again on Saturday, June 23 at 7:00 when the Maine State Lottery Sportsman will go 50 laps in the Gardner Construction Enterprises series race #2.
