WHAT THEY ARE SAYING

EMILY PACKARD, Driver of the No. 9x Northstar Fireworks/Berlin Optical Expressions Ford, On getting back to Thunder Road this week: “I’m excited to go and keep working on two-lane traffic, getting better and the whole weekly racing thing. It’s definitely the part where I struggle the most. Thunder Road is definitely the toughest track out there, so every time I go there it’s about learning as much as I can.”

On how much focus the team has had on making changes to the car each week: “We’re making changes to make it more comfortable for me, but ultimately, we’re trying to make me more comfortable with the track itself. We haven’t really made huge changes at all. It’s more about me – its not as much the car, it’s more about me making changes as a driver.
“I knew it was going to be tough there this year, actually, I think I’m doing a little bit better each time. I got some advice from Nick (Sweet) last week, and I’m excited to get there an apply it.”

On whether the learning curve has been steeper than she expected at Thunder Road this season: “No, not at all. The competition level is just so high, they always are on top of their game. You see a lot of close, competitive, fun racing.

“Yeah, it’s too early to start looking for us to win. I think success for me right now there would be a Top-10 finish. If I made a Top-5, that would be almost as great – in this part of my season – almost as great as having a win.”
