The late, great Marc Jenot, longtime racer at the Legion Speedway who passed away over the winter, was memorialized on Sunday, August 25. It was also Mechanic’s Race night as part of their Sunday Twilight series.
The Sportsmen Modified feature was a wild affair with several lead changes over the 25 laps. Eventually, Allen Hammond (#77) made his way to the front and rolled on to the win. “Flyin'” Ryan Avery (#01) held off Gary Seimons (#51), earning them the second and third place trophies.
The #55 car of Derek O’Hearn cruised to the win in the Super Street feature. Doug McPhail (#6) had a tough race, but at the end stood in place to take the second-place trophy. James Fadden (#9) unfortunately failed the post-race tech inspection, which put the third-place hardware in the hands of Allen Hammond (#1). Hammond has been pulling double duty the last couple of weeks, having recently acquired a Super Street racer.
Top honors for the Bond Auto Parts Outlaw Mini-Stocks went to rookie driver Craig Smith (#97). It was Smith’s first feature win. Jim Durkee (#9) battled to a second place finish, beating out points leader Chris Conroy (#78). Toby Tatro’s #19 lapped the field in the 600cc Mini-Sprint feature. Kolin Huntington (#26) and Tony Shaw (#20) each had their best finishes of the season, coming home in second and third.
By the end of the last feature the Sunday evening curfew of 9:30 was drawing near. Still, the Legion Speedway managed to get in three of the four Mechanic’s races. These races are a chance for someone to try racing that might not normally get the chance. The seat usually goes to somebody who has helped their team throughout the year.
Josh McKean drove the #19 to the win for the 600cc Mini-Sprints, and Mark Shaw (#20) got second. In the Mini-Stocks, Shawn Martin (#78) won, followed by Earl Maxham (#87) and Brody Poitras (#00). Brett Fadden (#9) took the Super Street Mechanic’s race, followed by Roger Comeau (#30) and “Charmin'” Armand Boucher (#91). The Mechanic’s race for the Modifieds will be held next week, September 1.
