Viets Tops Dirt Midgets, Pike wins Coupes

BRADFORD, VT – Veteran Modified stock car driver Chris Donnelly saved his best for last at Bear Ridge Speedway, winning the second annual Crate Motor Nationals and clinching the track’s 99ROCK Weekly Racing Series Title in the process. Donnelly, of Orford, NH, took the win in the last race of the season to wrap up the Bond Auto Parts DIRTcar Sportsman Modified track title

Donnelly started on the pole for the 100 lap event by virtue of setting fast time in time trials. The Crate Motor Nationals are the only event on the schedule to qualify by Time Trials. Even though Donnelly started on the pole the win was no easy task as he swapped the lead numerous times with his nearest points’ rival Kevin Chaffee over the course of the event. It was edge of the seat, side-by-side racing for the lead by the duo until lapped traffic came into play around lap 80, which allowed Donnelly to create an advantage by making a daring 3 wide move through a hole that quickly closed before Chaffee could reach it. The extra lap it took Chaffee to clear the traffic allowed Donnelly to create an advantage that turned into the win. Chaffee finished a very strong second in both the race and the season long points’ standings. The battle for third was just as torrid between 18th starting Vince Quenneville Jr and Adam Pierson. The same lapped traffic that thwarted Chaffee did the same to Pierson and allowed the Devils Bowl Speedway regular Quenneville Jr to clear Pierson to secure the third spot. Pierson finished fourth with Bryan King fifth.

The lead was not the place to be in the USAC Dirt midget Feature. Fast Timer Adam Pierson took the lead from the outset and led the initial 13 laps of the 40 lap event, building a substantial lead until pitting out of the lead with mechanical problems. Pearson’s misfortune gave the lead to teammate Josh Sunn, who led until spinning out of the lead with 28 laps in the books, handing the lead to Joe Krawiec. Krawiec could only maintain the lead for four laps when Scot Viets blasted by on the high side to take the top spot. Once in the lead Viets steadily pulled away to take the win by 2.8 seconds. Krawiec finished second with Kevin Chaffee besting Scott Holcomb in a photo finish for third. Dean Christiansen completed the top five. With his second place finish Joe Krawiec cemented the USAC Dirt Midget title.

Kane Pike scored the big win in the 60 lap Well River Chevrolet Sportsman Coupe Feature. Jason Colbeth led early before Melvin Pierson took the top spot. Pike took advantage of a yellow flag that helped him take the lead on lap 37. Once in the lead Pike was not seriously challenged and went on to take the win. Pierson claimed second with 2013 Champion Terry Williams third, Jason Horniak fourth and Jason Colbeth fifth.

The Laquerre’s Sports Limited Late Model Feature found 2103 Champion Jason Giguere take an easy win over Rookie Brandon Gray with Jeremy Hodge third Tyler Stygles was fourth with Jack Whynot fifth.

Kevin Harran took advantage of Tim Martin’s Misfortune and claimed the win in the 30-lap Weglarz Property Service Fast Four feature. Dave Durkee finished a distant second with Rob Gioia, Jim Durkee and Taylor Morse rounding out the top five.

Eric Post took the win in the KDD NAPA Ridge Runner Hornets, taking the lead with just two laps in the books. Stan Otterman finished second and claimed the track title for the Hornets. Bobby Bell was third with Joe Kemp fourth and Traci Nelson fifth.

The visiting Granite State Mini Sprints put on their usual good show with Toby Tatro topping Jacob Williams and Rich Crooker in the 600cc Class. In the 500cc event Tom Chaffee took his first win in only his fourth start. Doug Boisvert was second with Peter Belliveau third.

Also a big Thank-You goes out to Blenda Lakin who headed the Kids Bike Give-A-Way. Over 75 Bikes were given away Saturday night.

Bear Ridge Speedway is located on Kidder Road in Bradford, VT, just off Exit 16 on Interstate 91.
