2312312DOVER, Del. – Current and former professional athletes Brian Mitchell, Elena Delle Donne and Michael Carter-Williams will serve as dignitaries for both the Sept. 28, 2014 “AAA 400” NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race and Sept. 27 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Dover International Speedway.

Other dignitaries for the Sept. 26-28, 2014 race weekend include Don Gagnon, CEO of Auto Club Partners, who will be the Honorary Starter for the Sunday race; and Deputy Attorney General Sean Lugg with Agent Aaron Bonniwell of the Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement, who will serve as the Grand Marshal and Honorary Starter, respectively, for the Friday, Sept. 26 “Drive Sober 150” presented by the Delaware Office of Highway Safety NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race.

Former NFL star Mitchell will serve as Grand Marshal for the Sept. 28 event as an ambassador for AAA. He spent his career playing for the Washington Redskins, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants, and owns the second most all-purpose yards in NFL history, behind only Jerry Rice. Generally considered one of the best kick and punt return players in the history of the league, Mitchell had 13 special teams touchdowns in his career, second on the all-time list. Mitchell won the Super Bowl with the Redskins in the 1991 season and is a member of the team’s Ring of Fame.

A Wilmington, Del.-native, Delle Donne currently plays for the Chicago Sky in the WNBA and will be the Honorary Starter for the Sept. 27 race. After earning national recognition as the country’s No. 1 women’s college basketball recruit while at Ursuline Academy in Wilmington, Delle Donne went on to enjoy a successful college career at the University of Delaware, before being drafted by the Sky as the second overall pick in the 2013 draft.

Delle Donne won the 2013 WNBA Rookie of the Year award and in 2014 led the Sky to the WNBA championship series, losing to the Phoenix Mercury.

The Grand Marshal for the Saturday race will be Michael Carter-Williams, point guard for the Philadelphia 76ers. The 11th overall selection by the 76ers in the 2013 NBA Draft, he burst onto the scene in his first career game with 22 points, 12 assists, seven rebounds and nine steals — a feat only matched three other times in league history.

The performance earned him the Eastern conference NBA Player of the Week award, and he would go on to earn NBA Rookie of the Month honors four times, eventually winning the 2013-14 NBA Rookie of the Year award.

NASCAR returns to Dover International Speedway Sept. 26-28 for the Sept. 28 “AAA 400” NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, the Sept. 27 NASCAR Nationwide Series race and the Sept. 26 “Drive Sober 150” presented by the Delaware Office of Highway Safety NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race.
