After week five of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series action was rained out
just after hot laps concluded last week, New Smyrna Speedway is hoping for
better weather this Saturday night as week six of the season will feature
action in the Super Late Model, Sportsman, Modified and Bomber classes.
The Super Late Models return for their second points race of the year with
March 28th winner Anthony Sergi of Oviedo leading the drivers expected to be
in action. Wayne Anderson of Wildwood was a surprise entrant two weeks ago
and he finished second to Sergi. It remains to be seen just how much racing
Anderson will do himself here this year as he is guiding the careers of his
two sons Randy and Ricky again this season. Veteran Orlando racers David
Rogers and Brad May are expected in the field as well as Port Orange driver
Michael Lira who is coming off a fine 9th place finish in the ARCA race at
Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville, TN last week. Young Noah “Little Gator”
Cornman has his new Super Late ready and will make his first start in that car
after running the opening SLM event in his Pro Late Model. Another driver
making a return to the Super Late Model ranks will be Cory Spencer of Tavares
who turned a few practice laps last Saturday before the rains came.
The Sportsman class has seen a lot of cars this year and plenty of action to
boot with three different winners in the three events held. Twenty-six cars
and 28 different drivers have been in action in the Sportsman division so far
this year. New Hampshire owner/driver Sandy Lee’s #10 machine has seen three
different pilots including opening night winner Michael Seay, Jon Compagnone
and Lee himself as he finished third last time out. Lee’s car is one of
several that race out of the Sheppard Racing Enterprises shop in Deland and
they will be bringing 5-7 cars again this week.
Junior Beckner of Apopka leads a very tight point race as he is just two
points ahead of Donny Williams and Patrick Thomas (the winner two weeks ago)
who are tied for second. Richard Goodrich is six markers back in fourth and
Daniel Conlin, Jr. sits ten points behind Beckner. Other drivers expected
include George Gorham, Jr., Timmy Todd, Jr., Ron Gustafson, Austin Howell,
Steve Barnes and Scott Bramlett who is back after virtually destroying the
front end of his new car on opening night.
Jerry “The Hammer” Symons has two wins to his credit in three starts and leads
the Modified point standings by 14 over Matthew Green. Matt Wheeler is third
in points, 17 markers behind Symons. Expect a good field this week that
should also include Alan Bruns, Tank Tucker, Ricky Moxley, Matt Jarrett and
others including St. Augustine’s Joe Jacalone who will be running a Modified
for the first time after competing here before in the Super Late Models.
Shane Sutorus continues to lead the Bomber point standings by 13 over James
Skinner.
