The tradition of the Spring Green, which began in 1974 at Catamount Stadium in Milton, VT, has moved around over the years from track to track. It has been run at Plattsburgh, NY’s Airborne Park Speedway on 21 occasions, the most of any track. The list of winners is a history book of Late Model racing in the northeast (see below). The 41st edition of the race took place at Airborne last Sunday, arguably one of the favorite tracks the ACT Late Models appear at each year. A perfect day for racing and a spirited battle between friendly rivals Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. of Hudson, NH and St-Denis, QC’s Patrick Laperle kept fans from both sides of the border happy for the entire event. The other seven-team battle that raged for the second half of the event was also an example of great short track racing.

**[Just some of the names to have won the Spring Green over the years from Northern NASCAR, NASCAR North, the ACT Pro Stock Tour, the Tiger Sportsman Tour, and the ACT Late Model Tour: Dragon (3), Dion, Cabana, Mike Barry, Leclair, Kourafas, Fadden, Leclerc, Hanley, Lepage, Hoar, Nason, Scott, Cyr, Helliwell, Polewarczyk, Jr.]**

*Brandon Atkins, Au Sable Forks, NY – 4NY—The 2014 ACT Rookie of the Year was one of the fastest cars during practice in preparation for the Spring Green. Coming off a strong effort at the Merchants Bank 150 at Thunder Road two weeks ago, the talented high school graduate was at his family-owned track. “My favorite track is actually Devil’s Bowl and I can’t wait to get back there next month for the ACT race,” Atkins said.

His skill is showing early at both the ¼-mile bullrings like Thunder Road and bigger tracks such as the Airborne ½-mile. Some early heavy traffic found the 4NY involved in a caution in the “Calamity Corner” that was turns 3 and 4, and Atkins was sent to the rear. But the youngster showed impressive resilience and the ability to overcome adversity. Brandon fought back and salvaged a solid 11th-place finish from what was looking like a disappointing day. His recovery keeps him positioned in eighth place in the ACT Championship point standings going into the opening event at the new Speedway 51 in Groveton, NH, on Saturday, May 30, where the 4NY team spent much of last year’s race in the top two positions. For his positive attitude and the team’s “never give up” motto, Brandon Atkins earns a Star of the Race Award for the Spring Green 115.

*Brad Babb, Windham, ME – 15NH—Another former ACT Rookie of the Year, Beech Ridge Motor Speedway track champion, and solid top-five championship contender in ACT for the 2015 campaign was a victim of the yellow sequence between laps 42 and 44 (the only three yellows of the event). The Joey Laquerre–owned entry for the Babb family racing team was having a solid early run until they were involved in the multi-car melee between turns 3 and 4. The accordion mess separated a host of competitive cars from the front runners and changed their strategy of saving tires and patience. Brad had won the last ACT race at Thunder Road and looked like he would be a contender to challenge for the Spring Green until that incident. He fought his way back to the mid-pack battle and spent the majority of time in the outside lane to claim a respectable finish and remain in the top-five in points. For the excellent recovery from some bad luck, Babb and his team are awarded a much deserved Star of the Race Award.

*Rich Dubeau, Plainfield, NH – 30NH—Once again this rookie contender surprised many in attendance with his full day of progress. As has been the case at every race during the young season, new tracks, different configurations, and different sizes have been the challenges this rookie team has faced. Their attitude and ability to adapt to the various challenges presented has been one of the most impressive offerings of the early season. Practice left the 30NH low on the speed charts, and they appeared tentative at best in their heat race. By consolation time the team, and apparently the driver, adjusted and earned a solid starting spot in the middle of the feature. A very impressive run on the outside lane throughout the event and running as part of the dynamic mid-pack race will serve to season this capable newcomer. For the continued improvement throughout the race, this rookie team finds in 10th place in the point standings after completing nearly a third of the championship run. The Rich Dubeau team is certainly deserving of another Star of the Race Award and seems headed for one of the most competitive rookie runs in recent memory.

The ACT Late Model Tour will be back in action for the Generation Next 151 at Speedway 51 in Groveton, NH on Saturday, May 30. Post time for the track’s season opener is 5:30 pm.

Two first time winners highlighted the action at Claremont Speedway on Friday night Unfortunately there were a couple of lowlights that dampened the mood slightly. While Mark McClay and “king” Kenny Thompson were picking up their first wins of the season, two drivers would end their nights on negative notes.

In the Sanel Auto Parts wildcats, Alexis Aiken was able to get her Honda to the front early and hold off numerous threats from her competition, the strongest being from Hayden Scott. Scott, after taking two weeks off for family reasons, returned to competition and started deep in the field but was able to slice his way to the front. Late in the going he was able to pull right up on the rear bumper of Aiken and mount a challenge but to no avail. Aiken would take the win saying in victory lane “I didn’t even know he was there, I just tried to go as hard as I could.” Scott would settle for second with Craig Smith in third, Cole Littlewood and Alex Poisson would round out the top five. In post race technical inspection, Scott was found to have a part on his car that did not meet the divisions specifications and as a result was disqualified from the event moving Smith, Littlewood, and Poisson up one spot and Kyle Currier to fifth. Littlewood and Scott were victorious in heat race competition.

The Claremont Speedway Limited Sportsmen may have been light on cars but certainly not excitement. Kenny Thompson had come close to his first win of the season a couple of times only to see it slip away, but not this time. Thompson would open up a sizeable lead and then hold off multi event winner Gary Colburn. Colburn came from a long way back to challenge Thompson but Thompsons machine was “on a stroll” according to Thompson in victory lane, and would not be beat. Colburn was happy with his finish stating afterwards “consistency wins championships”. Third would go to young gun Tyler Janovsky. Scott Vien and Trevor Rocke would round out the top five while Thompson was the heat race winner.

The R.E. Hinckley Super Street main event was a barnburner. As with the aforementioned divisions, the eventual winner was able to get out front early but the racing behind him was wild and crazy. Jack McClay and his team came into the season with High expectations but until tonight had struggled to find the sweet spot with their car. Those struggles ended Friday night as McClays Mike Richardson owned and tuned mount was the class of the field. Craig Smith started in the seventh position and was able to work his way to second while John Lavoie started ninth and was able to move forward eventually winding up third maintaining his point lead. Joe tetreault would finish fourth after racing most of the night in the outside groove and Russ Davis would quietly come home in fifth. Heat races were won by Davis and McClay.

The heat race for the North American Infrared Late models was as rough and tumble as they come, as there seemed to be a sense of urgency amongst the competitors. After ten laps of beating and banging amongst several drivers Chris Riendeau avoided trouble and came out on top. Following the checkered flag, as the drivers headed for the pit area, Robert Hagar chose to stop his machine, get out and confront another competitor. Track officials deemed this a safety issue as well as poor sportsmanship and disqualified him from the rest of the nights events. When the green flag dropped for the feature the rough racing continued bringing out several cautions.

When the dust settled and the checkered flag flew Bucky Demers picked up his second win of the season. In victory lane Demers complimented the direction of the track and its new ownership group. “These guys are headed in the right direction folks” said Demers, “all we need is a few more cars and this will be a fantastic show to watch”. Rookie Jeff Morse finished second crediting patience in the cockpit for another solid run for the first year late model team. Jeremy Zullo backed up his first win a week ago with a solid third place run. Riendeau and Art Heino rounded out the top five.

Also on the card Friday night were Legends cars as well as the entry level Bandolero division. Shaun Buffington won the feature for the 1250 cc motorcycle engine powered legends cars. While he dominated the night Thomas Gray and Noah Korner had a spirited battle for the second spot with Gray coming out on top. The Bandolero cars are a division for kids to learn to race and are usually used as a stepping stone between go karts and legends cars. Eleven year old Casey Call took home the winners trophy while twelve year old Jake Matheson wound up second. Robby Douglas was running a solid third and battling for second on the last lap when he spun coming to the checkered flag handing third to Ethan Durocher who turned twelve just two days later.

Friday May 29 will see all four divisions of the Twin State Property Maintenance racing series in action. The Late models will compete in the final tune up for their big money extra distance race to be run Friday June 5. Also in action this week will be the cars and stars of yesteryear as the STAR tour takes to the Thrasher Rd. speed plant.

Veteran competitor Alan Wilson of Hebron scored his first victory of the season in the 50-lap Super Late Model feature race on Motorcycle Safety Night presented by the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety, topping the Budweiser Championship Series racing card at Oxford Plains Speedway on Saturday night.

Wilson, one of the most prolific winners ever at the historic Route 26 oval, won his first OPS championship in the Street Stock class back in 1979. In Saturday’s Super Late Model main event he charged by early race leader Adam Polvinen and survived a mid-race challenge by reigning track champion TJ Brackett of Buckfield.

Kyle Treadwell of Auburn mounted a final challenge, but settled for runner-up honors behind Wilson in the 50-lap headliner. Timmy Brackett of Buckfield crossed the line in third position. Vanna Brackett of Buckfield made a last-lap move that paid off with a fourth-place finish, by inches over former Oxford 250 champion Scott Robbins of Dixfield.

Three heat races were contested for the Super Late Models, with Polvinen, TJ Brackett and Timmy Brackett triumphant in the preliminary events.

Zach Emerson nailed down his first Oxford Plains Speedway win in five years, prevailing in the wild, crash-filled 30-lap main event for Allen’s Coffee Flavored Brandy Street Stock competitors. Emerson’s victory was particularly sweet, as his teenaged son, Jonathan, was also participating in the victory lane ceremony, finishing in third position.

It was a sweep of the podium spots for Sabattus Street Stock racers, as Andrew Breton claimed runner-up honors. Bryce Mains of Naples made his first appearance of the season and finished in fourth position. Turner’s Calvin Rose, Jr. rounded out the top five. Corey Morgan of Lewiston and Rose won heat races.

Ryan Robbins helped his championship points lead out by scoring his second main event victory of the season in the OPS Mods class. Scott Alexander of Newburgh raced alongside the eventual winner for much of the race to claim runner-up honors. Nik Coates of Turner held off West Baldwin’s Randy Sanborn to earn the final podium finishing position. Robbins also claimed the checkered flag following the heat race.

Veteran Legends Cars racer Bobby Weymouth of Topsham outgunned West Newfields competitor Tyler Braunschweig to claim the top spot following the 20-lap INEX-sanctioned event. Steve Benincasa of Buxton battled hard for his third-place finish. Rounding out the top five were Mike Humphrey of Cornish and Hiram’s Roger Edgecomb. Braunschweig won the heat race.

Cam Childs of Leeds led wire-to-wire in a closely-contested 20-lap feature race for the entry-level Bandits division. Bridgton’s Troy Smith was a close second under the checkered flag, with Tyler Green’s first appearance of the season netting a third-place trophy. Oxford racers Jacob Hall and Shaun Hinkley rounded out the top five. Dan Wade of New Gloucester and Hinkley won heat races.

Budweiser Championship Series competition resumes at Oxford Plains Speedway on Saturday (May 30) for Wood Pellet Warehouse Night. Post time is 7:00 p.m. For more information visit oxfordplains.com or call (207) 539-8865.

Barry Gray continued his dominance at Monadnock Speedway, holding off charges from Matt Frahm, Mike O’Sullivan, and Larry Gelinas, to grab his fourth Granite State Pro Stock Series in the Memorial Day 100.

Gray took the lead at the drop of the green, after beating pole sitter Cory Robert to the line on lap 1. Robert would be out of contention early, after an incident on lap 4 with Adam Norton, bringing out the first caution of the evening. Matt Frahm and Tommy O’Sullivan would challenge Gray on three restarts, before settling in for a green flag run.

Nick Boivin brought out the fourth caution on lap 25, as his Ford of North Hampton automobile expired on the entrance of pit lane. Gray would hold on to the lead on the last two restarts, until Gelinas and Frahm mounted a charge with 25 laps to go. Gray’s racing line carried him high into turn one, where Gelinas would drop low, but could not make the car stick to draw alongside, as Gray would hold on for the victory.

After the race, Gray said “My hats off to my guys, they work really hard. This is a home track for us, all the guys ran us good and clean tonight.”

With the win, Gray is now tied with Frahm for the all-time series lead in victories.

Gelinas, who settled for second after starting in the 9th spot, attempted multiple times to get underneath Gray, but could not finish the charge. Gelinas continued, “He gave me some room to where I could try something, but there would’ve been contact if I would’ve tried [to push the issue] any harder. It was exciting to try, that’s all you can do.”

Gelinas, who maintains his car by himself, had the engine out of his car the previous night, but rushed to get the Portland Speed/Gelinas HVAC Chevrolet back together for this race.

Frahm finished in the third spot, but was not satisfied, saying “We had a great night, but I’m aggravated with myself for not pulling the trigger earlier. I think we had the car to beat here tonight, and we showed it all day in practice. I hate it more for my guys, they work hard, but congrats to Barry [Gray] and Larry [Gelinas]. They deserve it.”

Point-leader entering the event, Derek Griffith worked his way to the fourth spot, while Mike Parks settled for fifth. Mike O’Sullivan finished sixth, with Jeremy Harclerode, who made his Granite State Pro Stock Series debut, finishing seventh. Josh King, Bryon Baker, and Tommy O’Sullivan rounded out the top ten. King and Jeremy Davis, who broke an axel late in the race, won the heat races.

The Granite State Pro Stock Series will be back in action June 14, at Hudson International Speedway.

There was no catching 17 yr. old Dylan Duhaime, as he showed that a good handling car coupled with a highly skilled driver made for a nearly unbeatable combination. Duhaime, technically a rookie in the Wicked Cool Midget series, chose to start last in the 8 lap heat and finished second. A three car invert put him on the outside pole for the 25 lap feature. He battled pole sitter Christian Briggs for a few laps, then passed him and quickly showed why he was a Dirt Midget Association star as he ran away with the race. The rest of the field was left to battle among themselves with Christian Briggs, Richie Morrocco, Mike Ordway, Jim Cataldo, John Townsend, Ben Mikitarian, and DJ Moniz following. On Lap 22 Briggs, running second, slapped the 4th turn wall and was done for the day. A restart with 3 to go didn’t deter Duhaime as he once again pulled away for the win.

Duhaime and 14-yr old Ben Mikitarian are the latest young guns to join up with the Wicked Cool Midgets. Mikitarian is a longtime quarter-midget racer who is now stepping up to full midgets. He showed with his skill that he will soon be running up front.
The Midgets had a meet and greet on the front stretch which was a big hit with the fans As many kids got to sit in the cars and dream and many parents tried to figure out how to save enough money to be a car owner. Everyone got WCM logo stickers and t shirts were given out to the kids. Building a fan base is one of the priorities of the new series.

The Wicked Cool Midgets will be back at Star Speedway on Saturday, June 6 with more exciting racing.

Joey Doiron of Berwick, Maine held off a hard-charging Jeremy Davis to score an historic 150-lap AIM PASS North Super Late Model victory at the famed ¼-mile Thunder Road International Speedbowl in Barre, Vermont on Sunday afternoon (May 24). For Doiron it was a homecoming of sorts, as he made his first appearance at the track in some six years, moving on to the Super Late Model ranks after winning the ACT Late Model Rookie of the Year award in his only full season of Late Model; competition. While Doiron started the 150-lap headline event at Thunder Road’s annual Mekklesen RV Memorial Day Classic he had plenty of competition, as he chased fellow former ACT stars Glen Luce and Wayne Helliwell, Jr. through most of the first one-third of the event.

Luce, of Turner, Maine, looked dominant in his turn at the front of the pack, but after the event’s final restart he faded back to fifth position before retiring from the race with apparent mechanical woes. Helliwell, a former ACT champion now residing in Dover, New Hampshire, then looked to be the dominant car, but after running a notably different line around the tricky oval the Bernhardt 27 appeared to run out of rubber and he dropped back to finish ninth. Jeremy Davis of Tamworth, New Hampshire kept the pressure on Doiron over the final 50 laps or so, steering a car purchased from the winning driver about a year ago.

Defending PASS North Super Late Model champion DJ Shaw of Center Conway, New Hampshire was third under the checkered flag with any disappointment tempered by the fact that he had a hand in building all of the cars finishing in the top four at the family business, Dale Shaw Race Cars.

Thunder Road veterans rounded out the top five with Bobby Therrien of Hinesburg crossing the line in fourth position just ahead of eight-time ACT Late Model champion Brian Hoar of Georgia.

Two-time 2015 PASS North SLM winner Mike Rowe, who won the ACT Super Late Model title back in 1994, also winning a race at Thunder Road that season, ended up with a sixth-place finish after an altercation with six-time series champion Johnny Clark of Farmingdale, Maine dropped him to the back of the pack early in the race. Travis Benjamin of Morrill, Maine ended up in seventh position, with Middlesex, Vermont racer Dave Pembroke close behind in eighth. Helliwell and four-time series champion Ben Rowe of Turner, Maine rounded out the top ten.

Doiron, Bradley Babb of Windham, Maine and Johnny Clark earned victories in 15-lap heat races, setting the grid for the 150-lap finale.
