Wiscasset2013logoWISCASSET SPEEDWAY PRESS RELEASE JUNE 6, 2015
THE HEWINS DOMINATE STRICTLY STREET

Wiscasset Speedway held its weekly races last Saturday. The warm summer day turned into a cool summer evening, and the cars raced under the big lights. Fans were gathered to watch five races: Strictly Street, Outlaw Mini’s, Late Model Sportsman, Modifieds, and the flex race of the week was the Amsoil Nelcar Legends.

First on the track were the Strictly Streets for a Spotlighted main event of thirty-five laps. Heat winner Bryan Robbins of the #51X started at the pole with the #51 of Kyle Hewins beside him. In third was Chanler Harrison of the #85.

When the green flag waved over the track, Bryan Robbins and Kyle Hewins raced door to door. Behind was a battle for third, with the #83 of Dan Brown moving from his sixth place start to third when he passed Harrison on the back stretch during lap one.

Brown headed to the outside line during lap six, looking for second, but was unable to complete a pass and fell back into line. The #8X of Ethan Dinsmore brought out a caution during lap eight. On the ensuing restart, Harrison sped from forth to second, and Kyle Hewins leaped to the lead. Bryan Robbins fell to third, and Brown to forth. Brown was able to claim third once again during lap nine when he passed Bryan Robbins on the inside.
Leaders changed during lap eleven when Harrison went sideways coming out of turn two and bringing out the second caution of the race. Brown moved to second, and Corey Morgan of the #26 slid into third. Still in the lead was Kyle Hewins. On the restart, Kyle Hewins and Brown raced side by side. Brown snuck ahead, gaining a lead during lap twelve, but a determined Kyle Hewins regained his ground, and by the following lap was once again race leader.

Coming up from his seventh place start was the #55H of Kurt Hewins. Kurt Hewins passed Morgan on the outside of the back stretch, taking third, during lap thirteen. The yellow came out during lap thirteen, and when racing action resumed, Brown began racing Kyle Hewins for the lead. Brown headed down to the bottom of the track and passed Kyle Hewins for the lead during lap fourteen.

Kurt Hewins was looking for his opportunity to gain position on the track. His chance came during lap fifteen, and he passed his brother, Kyle Hewins. Kurt Hewins continued his advance up the track, looking for first. During lap eighteen, Kurt Hewins was able to get under Brown, and he snagged the lead. Brown fell to second. Kyle Hewins was still in third.

There was a caution during lap twenty-nine, and on the restart, Brown, who was on the outside, fell to third, with Kyle Hewins moving to second. Race leaders remained constant until race conclusion. Kurt Hewins took the checkered. Kurt Hewins was point leader heading into tonight’s race. He will stay in first with Saturday’s win. Kyle Hewins placed second. Brown rounded out the top three in third. Brown is second in points, only four down from Kurt Hewins. Third in points is Dave Brannon. Brannon is six points below point leader, Kurt Hewins.

Post-race, Kurt Hewins said, “It was a great race. It was even better I shared the winner’s circle with my brother, and my son won at Beechridge. I want to thank Mr and Mrs. Brown of Brown Construction, they are the car owners. A special thanks to my dad, Bub, and my girlfriend, Del for putting up with my long hours in the garage.

The Amsoil Nelcar Legends made another appearance at Wiscasset Speedway, competing in a twenty-five lap feature event. Kevin Girard of the #19 was on hand, the defending track three-time winner. However, his competition was stiff with the #38 of Mathew Bourgoine, 2014 undefeated at Wiscasset Speedway Legends driver. Also on hand was Matt Grant of the #84 driving his Gore Moving and Storage Legends car. Grant was proving himself to be a force on the track with numerous top five finishes this racing season.

Starting at the pole was the #70 of Tylar Braunschwieg. On the outside in second was Bourgoine. In third was the #10 of Ed Getty. Starting in fourteenth was Girard, and in twelfth was Grant. When racing action began on the track, Bourgoine took the lead. His lead didn’t last long as Braunschwieg swept up the track and passed both to take the lead, and Bourgoine fell to second, and Getty third.

It wasn’t until lap nineteen that leaders changed, when Braunschweig got caught in some lap traffic, allowing Bourgoine the chance to retake the lead. Coming up from behind was Grant. Grant passed Getty during lap twenty-one to take third, Grant continued his advance and passed Braunschweig for second during lap twenty-three. Bourgoine sped under the checkered in his Terry’s Garage Legends car, taking the win. Grant took second. Braunschweig placed third.

Prior to race time Bourgoine said, “I hope to do well, even if I start at the rear. But, you get what you get, and be happy with what you get.”
Bourgoine thanked sponsors, crew and family for his win, he said, “I want to thank Realtors of Maine, Maine Equipment, Terry’s Garage, Bourgoine Designs, my mom and dad, my sister Bekah Bourgoine, Terry Kirk, and Corrina Auto Body, and Brittany Furge.”

The next crowd pleaser was a twenty-five lap Outlaw Mini event. Heat winner Nick Bissell of the #53 started at the pole. To his outside was Mike Bolduc of the #84. Behind him was the #61 of Chris Morris. When the green flag was waved over the start finish line, the cars roared to life. Bolduc surged to the lead and the #41 of Dixon Smith came from behind to second before the completion of lap one. Smith passed Bolduc for the lead during lap two, but coming up from behind was the #10 of Jimmy Childs. Childs took the lead and led the pack through the remainder of the race, dominating the track. The #34 of Justin Trombley wove through lap traffic from his last place start, and took second by the conclusion of lap five, and Smith fell to third.

Lap seventeen saw a leader change with the #81 of Bryan Lancaster moving into third. Behind him, the #83 of Brady Romano advanced into forth. Race leaders remained the same until race conclusion, with Childs sweeping over the finish with a commanding lead. However, Childs had a faulty transponder. He had problems during the heat race, and an alternative transponder was offered to him. Childs thought he had remedied the issue, but the transponder was not working through the entire race. Therefore, as outlined in track rules, Childs was disqualified.

Trombley took the win. Trombley was point leader headed into Saturday’s race. Cody Tribbet of the #13 was tied for first in points with Trombley. Third in points was Jimmy Childs, thirty-four points below the point leaders. Lancaster placed second. Third place was awarded to Brady “Mr Outside” Romano. This was Romano’s first visit to Victory Lane at Wiscasset Speedway.

Trombley, in Victory Lane, said, “I’ll take it, I didn’t have anything for him. In my opinion, he was the obvious winner, and he should have won it. Let’s thank Kevin Robinson, he does everything for me on this car, my girlfriend, my whole family, and thank the fans for coming. There was a pretty good turn-out here. We’ll see what we have for the seventy-five laps.”

In two weeks there will be Outlaw Mini Madness. A seventy-five lap race to the finish on Father’s Day weekend.

Keeping fans on the edge of their seats was a thirty-five lap action packed Late Model feature. Starting at the pole was the #26 of Andrew McLaughlin. In second was the #34 of Tylar Robbins. Behind the pair was Steve Minott of the #28. McLaughlin broke away from the pack taking the lead at the green. However, there was a caution during lap two when the #51 of Puncin St Clair slowed on the track, and traffic bunched up behind him. The #4 of Ben Erskine landed in the infield and had to have help getting back on the track. The #15 of Nick Hinkley took some front end damage during the incident and headed to the pits for a quick repair, and was able to get back on the track before caution end.

When racing action resumed, McLaughlin once again shot to the lead. However Minott was able to get under Robbins and passed for second. The #21 of Shane Clark followed Minott and sped into third. During lap seven, Clark moved to the outside and passed Minott for second,

The second caution of the race occurred when the #33 of Josh St Clair went sideways on turn four and collected the #30 of Ryan St Clair. An exciting restart saw McLaughlin and Clark race door to door for the lead. Clark gains the advantage and leaves McLaughlin behind. McLaughlin doesn’t give up the fight, but he appears to suffer a mechanical problem and began drifting back after another restart. McLaughlin fell to tenth. Minott advanced to second, with the #25 of Will Collins moving into third,

A yellow flag during lap twenty-five resulted in a leader changes. Collins passed Minott for second on the inside during lap twenty-five. Then Hinkley passed Minott on the inside for third. The drivers all jockeyed for position, but Clark went under the checkered for first, his first win at Wiscasset Speedway. Collins placed second. In third was Hinkley. Going into tonight’s race, Hinkley was current point leader in the chase for points. Ryan St Clair was in second, only four points behind. Collins was tied with Ryan St Clair, also only four points away from Hinkley.

Post-race Clark said, “We try to put on a good show. It was a great race. It was great to win! It’s been five years since I’ve won, and I’m just very fortunate. We got to Andrew and I knew I was a little better and we ended up getting around him and leading a bunch of laps. The car got really tight at the end but we were able to hold Will off. Today was the day that my father passed away two years ago, so this win was good for that. It made it special. I want to thank my crew chief, Ben Ashine, my friend Henry, my fiancé Danya, my brother-in-law Wayne, my mom, my cousin Craig, my niece Courtney, my sister Sherrie, Wellman Paving, Littlefield Farm, Greg’s Auto Sales, and Mid-Coast Marine.”

Finishing up the evening was a thirty lap Modified race. Starting at the pole was the #61 of Shawn Austin, to the side was Jairet Harrison. In third was the #20 of Gary Thorne.

During lap two the #5 of Mark Lucas began passing all the race leaders and by the end of lap three was leading the pack. Lap five saw the first caution of the race, with Austin spinning on the track. Another caution during the same lap saw Harrison holding off the #3 of Scott Chubbuck and the #18 of Kevin Douglas. The caution occurred when Chubbuck made contact with Harrison while attempting a pass. Thorne advanced to second and Harrison advanced to third.

Thorne spun on the track during lap twenty and bought out another caution. Lucas remained in the lead. Harrison moved to second and the #8 of Richard Jordan advanced into third. On the ensuing restart, Chubbuck passed Jordan for third right off the start. Another caution saw a restart. When the dust cleared, Lucas was in the lead. Thorne was in second, and Harrison was in third. Chubbuck made a bid for third, but Harrison was able to hold him off. Lucas, point leader, took the win. Thorne, eight points below Lucas in points, took second. Harrison placed third. Harrison is also third in points, twenty-eight points below Lucas.

Post-race Lucas said, “My car felt like it was on rails until the right rear tire gave out. I was hoping for no more restarts because Gary Thorne was coming for me hard. I want to thank the fishing vessel Mamiluem, Dallas Staples Excavating, Steve’s Signs, JT Race Cars, and all my crew and family for this win.”
