ALEXANDER CLAIMS FIRST PROSTOCK WIN AT BOSS HOGG 100

By Lisa Maguire

Fans thronged the grandstands at Wiscasset Speedway to see the annual Boss Hogg 100 Prostock race. The day was warm and sunny, and turned into a balmy evening under the bright lights of Wiscasset. The race was sponsored by LLP Transport and Ideal Portable Toilets. There were twenty-one Prostocks that competed for a purse that was nearly $8,000. The group one division of racing action was also on the schedule, including New England Four Cylinder Prostock, Napa Super Street, and Thunder Four Mini’s.

The Boss Hogg 100 lap Prostock race was the highlight of the evening. Starting on the pole was the #01 of Andy Saunders. To his right was the #47 of Kelly Moore. Behind in third was the #96 of Wyatt Alexander. When green flag racing began, the cars roared across the start line to the cheering of the gathered fans.

There was an early caution during lap four when the #14 of Josh St Clair spun on the track and collected the #13 of Nathan Tribbet. Tribbet was towed off the track, but Josh St Clair was able to return to racing action. On the restart, Alexander was able to pass Moore for second. During lap six, the #15X of Scott Chubbuck passed Moore for third.

A red flag caution was called during lap eight when the #5 of Joe Morrey lost fuel. Alexander swerved up the track to avoid it on turn two, causing cars behind him to check up. The #1 of Jeff Burgess and the #19 of John Rideout went into the wall and the #05R of Phillip Richardson got tire damage. The #15 of Nick Hinkley also got some damage. Burgess never made it back onto the track, but after a trip to the pits, Hinkley, Rideout, and Richardson were back on the track.

On the lap of the restart, the #29 of Kevin Morse and the #14X of Dave St Clair got together on turn two, bringing out the yellow. When action resumed on the track, Alexander did not have a good start and Chubbuck passed him for second. The #51 of John Peters also passed Alexander and took third. The three early cautions behind them, the cars had a long period of green flag racing. Despite the cautions, Saunders was able to keep ahead and not lose position.

There was a lot of action in the pack, but there was no top three leader change until lap thirty, when Moore passed Peters for third. Peters fell back over the next few laps, and headed to the pit during lap fifty-one. Chubbuck attempted to pass Saunders for the lead, but couldn’t complete a pass, and once again fell in behind him.

Everything changed during lap seventy. There were only seven cars on the lead lap at this point of the race. The race for sixth place became heated, the #56 of Evan Beaulieu and the #16 of Vinnie Miller got into a tangle on turn one bringing out a caution. On the restart, Chubbuck shot ahead, but a determined Saunders didn’t give up easily. Door to door racing ensued, and contact was made between the pair coming out of turn three. Chubbuck went into a spin, causing Saunders to spin out of the way to avoid him. That was the final caution of the race. Chubbuck headed to the pits, but was soon back on the track.

There was a new running order because Moore and the #05 of James Osmond, both in the top five, headed to the pits during the caution. Alexander took the lead. Miller advanced to second. Saunders moved to third. Chubbuck moved to fourth. Beaulieu, who had come back onto the track, was in fifth. The green flag saw a lot of action, with all cars vying to get ahead. Chubbuck pulled to the side of Saunders on lap ninety, and was able to complete the pass during lap ninety-two for third. The battle for second and third, and the position of lapped traffic allowed Alexander to gain a commanding lead. Alexander made his first career Prostock win at the age of fifteen, taking the checkered. Miller placed second. Rounding out the top three was Chubbuck.

The Hard Charger award, given to the driver who advanced the most positions during the race went to Vinnie Miller, who advanced twelve positions from his fourteenth place start. He won an A&R Bodies gift certificate valued at $500. The half-way leader, Andy Saunders, won a $300 gift certificate from Kennebec Equipment Rentals, and a graphics package from Code 99 Designs. Cash was awarded to all who competed in the race. There was an additional $25 given to the race leader for each lap led during the race. The first place winner also received an additional $500, courtesy of **********.

Post-race, Alexander said, “It was pretty spectacular to win, one of those hard to describe moments. When I was riding in fifth, I didn’t think I had it for Saunders or any of the other guys. But, I knew if I kept my head on straight and was patient, something might come my way. I was just riding. Then I got a good gap between me and the others, I have to thank lapped traffic for moving out of my way. They stayed out of the way for the most part, and that was a huge part in making this as clean of a race as it could be. It was pretty spectacular. I’ve been watching Dave St Clair race since I was pretty little. I’ve watched him race here. It’s pretty special. This one is for Lloyd Gillie and Johnny Phippin, who unfortunately aren’t with us anymore, but were family friends. I want to thank M&T Trucking, MH Humphrey & Sons Logging, Puzzled Racing, Autism Awareness, RF Jordan Construction, Linnehan’s Riteway Auto, Harry’s Motor Sports, and Coastal Maine Realty, my grandparents, my mom, my dad, and my whole family, everyone that supports me, Chet Hansom, Rick Ray, and Devon Reynold, my spotter.

In other racing action were the New England Four Cylinder Prostock division, competing in a twenty-five lap feature. Starting at the pole was the #15 of Tyler Bailey. In second was the #5 of Cody Billings. Behind was the #42 of Mike Kibbin. During lap three, point leader Kamren Knowles passed Kibbin on the outside of turn two for third. Kamren Knowles continued his advance up the track and passed Billings on the outside for second. Kamren Knowles secured the lead during lap eight, and passed Bailey coming out of turn four onto the front stretch.

There was a caution during lap twelve, and on the restart Billings passed Bailey for second. The #0 of Alex Waltz went to the outside on the back stretch to pass Bailey, and Bailey went into a spin, collecting Kibbin. There was a red flag caution while the track was cleared. When racing action resumed once again, Waltz, who was in third, passed Billings for second. Coming up from his thirteenth place start was the #27 of Jacob Hendsbee. Hendsbee passed Billings during lap thirteen for third.

A door to door race for the lead began. Waltz moved to the outside of Kamren Knowles, and was able to complete a pass for the lead on turn four of lap seventeen. Hendsbee passed Kamren Knowles for second during lap eighteen on the inside of turn three. Hendsbee looked for first but couldn’t complete a pass before there was a caution during lap twenty-two. When action began on the track once again, Hendsbee had the outside track, and Kamren Knowles was able to pass on the inside for second. There was door to door racing action for second, but Kamren Knowles was able to keep his spot. Waltz took the checkered, making this his second consecutive win, and his third win of the season. Kamren Knowles took second. Hendsbee placed third.

In the point’s race, Kamren Knowles was in the lead with 402 points. His closest competitor was Hendsbee with 372 points. In third was Jeff Prindall with 304 points.

After the race, Waltz said, “It was another close one at the end. We held them off for quite a while. It took a while to get up through the field though, this week. I didn’t get by them quite so quick. But after that the car was so-so depending on the restart. On the last restart it was pretty good and we were able to hold them off. I didn’t want to give them the bottom, I figured they would get by me if I gave them the bottom. So, I held it down there and they couldn’t get by on the outside, so it was good. I want to thank Richard and Vanessa (Jordan). I want to thank my Auntie Amy, she’s been here every week watching me. I want to thank the rest of my crew: Paul, my father, my grandfather, my mother, they are all there helping me every week and through the week helping me with the car. Hopefully we’ll come back in a couple of weeks and keep the streak going.”

A twenty-five NAPA Super Street feature was action packed. Starting at the pole was the #25 of Brad Bellows. To his right was the #88 of Jamie Norton. Behind was the #12 of Dave Patten. When the green flew over the track, the #13 of Dave Doherty passed Patten for third. During lap three the #38 of Dan Trask passed Doherty for third. Trask set his sights on second and passed Norton during lap four. During the same lap, Trask passed Bellows on the outside of turn two for the lead.

Coming up from his last place start was the #85 of Kenny Harrison. Harrison passed Norton on the outside for third during lap eight. There was a caution during lap fifteen when Patten went off the track on turn three. On the restart, the #02 of Jason Curtis passed Harrison for third. However, Curtis spun on the track during lap seventeen causing a caution that caused a jumble on the track. When the dust settled, Trask was still in the lead. Harrison was in second, and the #5 of Mark Lucas had advanced to third. When green flag racing began, Lucas had the inside track and passed Harrison for second on the back stretch during lap seventeen. The #1 of Adam Chadbourne got under Harrison and passed for third during lap seventeen. Race leaders remained constant until the finish. Trask took the checkered. Lucas placed second. Chadbourne took third.

In points, Josh Bailey, who placed sixth, was current leader with 412 points. 42 points below him was Chadbourne with 370. Running third in points was Curtis with 284.

After the race, Trask said, “That was a good race, I have to thank the guys: Mark, Rick, Buzzy, and Kathy. We just drove to the front and we are happy with that. I also want to thank Buzzy’s Trucking, Buzzy’s Barber Shop, Groundhog Graphics, Landry’s Auto, and Fine Line Paving.”

A twenty lap Thunder Four Mini feature was the next crowd pleaser. Starting at the pole was the #54 of Noah Haggett. To his right was the #68 of Jeff Minchin Jr. Behind was the #55 of Craig Pyy. During the opening lap, Pyy passed Minchin for second on the inside of turn three. The #4J of Joe Katula passed Minchin for third during opening lap on the inside, following Pyy. Katula continued his advance up the track, passing Pyy on the inside of the back stretch during lap four for second.

The one and only caution of the race came during lap seven, when the #113 of Cody Tribbet went into the back stretch wall. On the ensuing restart the #19 of Zach Audet had moved up from his twelfth place start, and passed Pyy on the inside of turn three during lap eight for third. Up ahead, Katula passed Haggett for the lead during lap ten. Audet passed Haggett on the inside during lap eleven and took third. Audet looked for his opportunity to pass Katula. His chance came during lap sixteen, and he passed Katula on the inside for the lead. Haggett followed Audet and passed Katula on the inside of turn three, taking second. Race leaders did not change through the conclusion. Audet took the win. Haggett placed second. Katula placed third.

In the point standing, Leandra Martin was leading with 396 points. In second was Michael Harrison with 368 points. In third place was Curtis Anderson with 338.

In Victory Lane, Audet said, “I have a street stock I usually race on Saturday night in Bangor, but I brought this down here to play. I like this racing, it was clean and fun. I want to thank my sponsors for this one.”
