Waterford, CT (August 15, 2015)- Things got a little more interesting in the race to the championship at New London-Waterford Speedbowl Saturday Night. On a night where only one division points leader saw victory, 4 other division leaders saw their championship battles get a little closer. Al Stone III extended his points lead in the Limited Sportsman division with a feature win. He now holds a 63 point lead over Monte Gibbs. Diego Monanhan, added to his points lead after finishing 3rd in last night’s SK Modified feature. Ken Cassidy Jr. continued his hot streak in the Mini Stocks, winning for the 2nd time in as many races. Cassidy is 2nd in points behind Wayne Burroughs, who finished 2nd to Cassidy last night. Joey Ternullo returned to victory lane in the Legends feature, which saw a change atop the championship standings when points leader Kyle Rogers was unable to finish the race after an early wreck. Late Model points leader Jason Palmer lost some ground, but not much, to Keith Rocco. Rocco, who came into the night 2nd in points, won the 50 lap feature by a country mile. Palmer still holds a 29 point lead after finishing 2nd.

new london waterfordIn the SK Modified feature, Ted Christopher took the lead with 30 to go, and never looked back. Rob Janovic Jr., who finished 2nd, used a re-start with 3 laps to go, to pass Monahan and hold him on the outside. Keith Rocco and Tyler Chadwick rounded out the top 5. Joey Gada finished 6th. The point standings are separated by just 20 points, with Chadwick, Janovic, Gada, and Rocco all in the hunt.

Cassidy used poise and patience to claim victory in the Mini Stocks. Meticulously picking his way through traffic and using 4 cautions, Cassidy passed several cars on his way to the lead and battled Burroughs side-by-side, until a final caution, which set up a green-white-checkered finish. Cassidy rocketed off the corner on the restart to the green flag and straight to victory lane. With the win, Cassidy pulled within 30 of points leader Burroughs, who finished 2nd. Mark Panaroni, Doug Curry, and Brad Caddick filled in the Top 5.

Kyle Rogers, the Legends division points leader heading into the night, was involved in an early skirmish on the front stretch, which was caused when Cory DiMatteo made contact with Rogers’ car, sending the 32 machine spinning in front of the field. Timothy DePizzol, who checked up to avoid contact, was hit from behind by Kurt Kreiger, sending Kreiger’s car airborne on the front stretch, where it came to land on it’s roof. DiMatteo was sent to the rear for over aggressive driving and Rogers was unable to continue due to heavy damage on his car. DiMatteo would rally back to finish 3rd, but was never in contention to pass race winner Joey Ternullo. Ternullo took the lead after the first caution and held off numerous challenges from Cornelius “Mikey” Flynn, to take the victory. Scott Limkemann and Ryan Lutz capped the top 5. DiMatteo moved into the points lead with the 3rd palce finish. He leads Rogers by 1 point, Limkemann by 5, and Lutz by 14.

Stone III was never threatened in the Limited Sportsman feature. Once out front, he never looked back. Defending champion Josh Galvin made an appearance in the division, finishing 2nd. It was Galvin’s first time out since being crowned the champion last season. Galvin is in his rookie season in the SK Light Modifieds. Allen Coates, Corey Coates, and Ed Gertsch Jr. finished out the top 5.

In the extra distance Late Model feature, it was text book Keith Rocco. Rocco powered his way through traffic, catching and passing points leader Palmer, and then checked out from the field. Palmer finished 2nd, and holds a 29 point advantage over Rocco. Jeff Smith made his return to the division after some time off, and finished 3rd. Anthony Flannery and James Banfield finished 4th and 5th, respectively. Flannery still holds an outside shot at a championship, trailing Palmer by 62 points.

Racing returns next Saturday, August 22nd, with Connecticut D.O.T/D.O.C. Employee Night, which will feature the 50 lap Mini Stock feature, which was rained out earlier in the season, SK Modifieds 35 laps, Limited Sportsman, 25 laps, SK Light Modifieds 25 laps, and Late Models 30 Laps.
