NEW ENGLAND MOTORSPORTS NORTH FOR SEPT 2ND 2015
By Lou Modestino

Bobby Hackel brought the house down in a thrilling finish on The Dirt Track at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Sunday, August 30. The 20 year-old from Rensselaer, NY overcame every challenge thrown his way, fending off two of the northeast’s hottest stock car drivers in Kenny Tremont Jr. and Adam Pierson. Hackel’s win came in the third event of the Berlin Optical Expressions Dirt Track Series n Interstate All Battery Center/Sherwin-Williams Night.

Hackel, whose last win at Devil’s Bowl came on the asphalt half-mile in July 2011, turned a season’s worth of struggles around with an impressive and popular performance in the 35-lap Liberty Street Discount Beverage & Deli Sportsman Modified race. He held off East Corinth, VT racer Pierson and West Sand Lake, NY’s Tremont over a series of six restarts; Tremont tested Hackel in the final five laps and made an inside-lane charge in the last corner of the race, but Hackel won the drag race to the checkered flag by three feet.

Pierson settled for third place, ahead of Jackie Brown Jr. and Vince Quenneville Jr. Hometown driver Billy Lussier recovered from two different accidents to finish a strong sixth, followed by Jason Sanville, Tim Hodge, Chris Murray, and D.J. Robinson. Josh Sunn, Justin Comes, and Leon Gonyo all ran in the lead pack before falling out of contention late in the race.

Dean Christensen of Granby, CT won the first-ever event for the Lucas Oil POWRi Outlaw Midget Series in a 20-lap dash. Seth Carlson of Brimfield, MA mounted a serious challenge in the middle stages of the race and pulled alongside Christensen before brake troubles dropped him back. Series point leader Frank Malec of Foster, RI took the runner-up position, and Carlson held on for third place. Manny Diaz and Tim Gallant completed the top five finishers.

Bill Duprey of Hydeville, VT was an easy winner in the 25-lap feature for the Renegade division. Darrell Older of Ballston Spa, NY finished second after an intense five-car battle. Curtis Condon ran third, followed by Lou Gancarz and Matt Mosher.

Justin Severance of Rutland, VT dominated the 15-lap Portland Glass Mini Stock race for his second-straight win at The Dirt Track at Devil’s Bowl. Todd Goldstein was the runner-up in his first Devil’s Bowl start, followed by Brian Bishop, Justin Bishop, and Chris Cardarelli.

The Dirt Track at Devil’s Bowl Speedway returns to action on Saturday, September 26 at 6:00 p.m. with the inaugural Fabian Earthmoving “Green Mountain Sprint Car Nationals” event, an open-competition race for winged 360 Sprint Cars co-sanctioned by the Empire Super Sprints and Sprint Cars of New England tours.

Randy Cabral ended a victory lane dry spell in convincing fashion this past Saturday evening in NEMA’s triumphant return to the Webber family’s Star Speedway. Cabral won the NEMA Lites feature in dramatic fashion with two laps to go, and captured the NEMA feature in convincing fashion.

In the Lites race, a first lap altercation between Dennis O’Brien and Danny Cugini sent Cugini’s badly damaged race car off on the hook, and Cugini was badly bruised up in the incident. When the race resumed, Paul Scally, looking for his first Lites victory, stormed out into the lead. Scally would be hotly pursued by Cabral in his family owned #35.

As the laps wound down, and the duo approached lapped traffic, Cabral began to catch Scally, as they caught the #41 of Meg Cugini. With two laps to go, Scally looked high on Cugini, and Cabral stormed to the bottom, taking both Cugini and taking over the lead from Scally. Hard charger, Anthony Payne inserted into the mix, also getting by Scally for second. Cabral would take down the victory, and would be followed by new points leader Payne, Scally, Scott Bigelow and ISMA Super Modified Standout, Chris Perley.

In the NEMA feature, Cabral, scheduled to start sixth, would end up starting in the fifth spot, after heat winner Avery Stoehr’s car would not fire prior to the initial green. When the green flag flew, Cabral wasted no time rocketing into the lead. Alan Chambers, in the Chambers #7, would pursue Cabral, but by the halfway point, Cabral had stretched his lead out to over a straightaway.

As the laps ticked down, NEMA competitors hoped for a caution, but the race went green to checkered, with Cabral taking down his first win of the season in convincing style. The Chambers family occupied the podium with Cabral, with Alan Chambers finishing second, followed by last week’s winner Jim Chambers in third. Seth Carlson finished fourth, followed by John Zych Jr., Paul Scally, Matt O’Brien, Pete Pernesiglio, Doug Cleveland and Jim Santa Maria.

Cabral’s win ties him with Dave Humphrey’s long standing record of sixteen consecutive seasons with a feature win, and also brings him to within twenty six points of current standings leader, John Zych Jr.

“I won this race last year, and on the way home, I found out that my uncle Bobby had passed away. He used to call me before and after every race. Tonight I felt like he was with him – and this one was for him,” said an elated Cabral. “We found some issues with the car that we think have been plaguing us all year, and hopefully we’ll have a good car for the rest of the season,” he said.

In NEMA’s Sundown Showdown, ISMA standout, Chris Perley, blasted out into the lead and never looked back. He took down the special event over Anthony Payne and Avery Stoehr.

“NEMA thanks the Webber family for having us back. We are very excited about our 2016 partnership and four dates at the race track,” said NEMA President Russ Stoehr.

NEMA returns to Monadnock Speedway for the Iron Mike Memorial this coming Saturday night.

Jay Sands of Hampton continued his impressive 2015 Late Model Sportsman campaign at Lee USA Speedway on Friday night, capturing the win in the prestigious Lance Davis Memorial 50-lapper for the R & R Public Wholesale-sponsored division. Sands was just one of eight feature winners on another exciting night of racing action at New Hampshire’s “Center of Speed”.

Polesitter Nate Leavitt of Buxton, ME battled side by side with Newmarket’s Bryan Kruczek for the first several laps before finally giving up the lead and dropping back a couple of spots. A lap 10 caution for a spin by Jimmy Ryder saw Kruczek, Jay Sands, and Leavitt leading the way, with Sands quickly moving to the front when racing resumed.

At lap 20, it was Sands, Kruczek, former champ Grant Aither of Kingston, Leavitt, and Frankie Eldridge of Stratham filling the top five spots, and Aither was on the move. He slipped past Kruczek shortly after the restart to take over second, and immediately began to pressure Sands for the top spot.

On lap 39, Aither completed his charge to the front, but he fell on bad fortune during a lap 44 restart sequence, ending his night with a trip into the retaining wall. Sands once again took command of the race, holding the top spot for the final six circuits to collect the big win.

Brentwood’s Jimmy Russell was up to contend in the late going and eventually settled for runner-up honors, with Thomas Bennett, George Helliwell of Pelham, Frank Wear, Alby Ovitt of Barrington, Neil Evans, Jr., Kruczek, and Mike St. Pierre rounding out the top ten finishers.

The EKeys4cars Supermodifieds contested twin 25-lap feature events on the night, with two first time victors adding their names to the winners’ list, as rookie competitor Jarrod Soucy of Hudson, MA and veteran Moe Lattime of Kingston both made their first trips to victory lane for the season.

Soucy, the 15-year old freshman sensation, outran multi-time champion Tommy Tombarello, Jr. of Haverhill, MA, and Mike Murphy of Groveland, MA to collect the checkers in the first 25-lapper, picking up the win in just his fourth start at Lee USA.

Northfield’s Leslie Keyser, Kingston’s Kyle Sawyer, Mike Ordway, Jr. of Fremont, Moe Lattime of Kingston, Mike Spurling of Rochester, Artie Rousseau of Newmarket, and Tilton’s “Super Dave” Sanborn closed out the top ten.

In the nightcap, Lattime chased down early leader Sawyer to slip past in traffic to take the lead on lap 14, and he never looked back, running out front the rest of the way to take his first checkered flag of the 2015 season in the Dick Osborne entry.

Tombarello strengthened his points lead with just a single event remaining on the 2015 calendar when he scored his second runner-up of the night, followed by Sawyer, Ordway, Sanborn, Spurling, Soucy, Keyser, Meredith’s Jim Barker, and Lance Barthelemy of Fremont.

Another former champion made his presence known in a big way in the David’s Race Cars and Components Hobby Stock feature event, as Jim Shorey ran the storied Doug Ricker machine to yet another feature win in the 25-lap main event.

Shorey got to the front early, and was easily the class of the field as he went the distance to collect his first feature win of the season by a comfortable 2.6-second margin. Paul Palen of Pelham scored a second place finish, with Brian DeStefano of Tewksbury, MA rounding out the podium in third.

2014 Rookie of the Year Zac Fraser of Nottingham posted a solid fourth place finish, followed by “Billistic Bill” Helliwell of Pelham, points leader Dennis Dumas of Nashua, Kenny Scott of Salem, Dave MacDonald of Tewksbury, MA, Chris Harding of Lebanon, ME, and Jay Avery of Berwick, ME.

Mike Farrington grabbed his first career win in the Tri-City Line-X Ironman feature event, holding off two-time 2015 winner and current points leader Troy Washburn of Farmington by just half a car length to collect the checkered flag and roll into the victory lane for the first time.

Shane Horvath of Nottingham was third, followed by Tyler Mitchell of Dracut, MA, Hannah Shaw of Chester, Evan Horvath of Nottingham, Wayne Osborne of Kingston, Zach Washburn of Rochester, Travis Hollins of Milford, and Greg Brannan rounding out the top ten.

Jesse Tellier of Dracut, MA scored the Pure Stock win over Tyler Mailhot and Jack Nicholson. The beautifully restored racers of the Senior Tour Auto Racers (STAR) were on hand as well, with Brian Robie of Charlestown, NH taking the Modified win over Scott Porier of Norwich, CT, Bobby Turner of Waterboro, ME, Darryl Dutch of Greenville, RI, and George Baldwin of Lowell, MA.

The Sportsman portion of the STAR program went to John Mulcahy of Lakeville, MA in his sharp 1965 Ford Mustang, followed by Richard Eastman of Merrimac, MA in his ‘71 Pinto Ollie Silva replica, Wade Worster of Berwick, ME, Frank Foley of Peabody, MA, and Joe Gausse of Londonderry.

The final regular Friday night event goes green on September 4, with the championships on the line for the EKeys4cars Supermodifieds, the R & R Public Wholesale Late Model Sportsmen, David’s Race Cars and Components Hobby Stocks, and the Tri-City Line-X Ironmen and Pure Stocks.

It was another fine evening for racing this past Saturday at the high banks of Monadnock Speedway as the Pro 4 Modified series came to town to join with the regular Whelen All-American divisions. Track owner Larry Cirillo had Ricky Craven’s old Winston #1 racecar out for some joy laps along with a few lucky fans in the passenger seat before the festivities kicked off for the night.

The story of the night came in the Sportsman Modified division as Scott MacMichael (2nd in points) closed the gap on leader Bill Kimball. Since encountering motor issues early this summer, MacMichael has seen a resurgence. With his 5th win of the year, third consecutive win in weekly action, he has his sights firmly set on Kimball and the points lead.

The race didn’t get going right away as three cautions in the first five laps slowed the pace. One incident sent Jason Barden into the front-stretch wall ending his night early when the #15 of Trevor Bleau forced it three wide on lap one.

Once the drivers got things squared away it was Ben Byrne out front for the first 10 laps as he battled Kim Rivet for the top spot early on. The big boys were charging hard behind them, as MacMichael ran with a pack that included Keith Carzello, Brett Gonyaw, and point’s leader Bill Kimball.

MacMichael got around Byrne after he and Gonway touched tires. MacMichael drove away from the field as the other three cars took their time in getting by Byrne and Rivet. Once Carzello and Gonyaw got around Rivet and Byrne, they set their sights on tracking down MacMichael as the laps quickly ticked away.

Kimball eventually moved by Byrne into 4th when Carzello and Gonyaw were duking it out behind MacMichael. Kimball’s car may have been the fastest out there, but negotiating through traffic kept him from getting out front. A bit of contact between the #8 and #87 saw Carzello have to lift to keep it from getting into the wall that allowed Gonyaw to separate and Kimball to get around him for third.

After the win MacMichael proclaimed that “It was barely running tonight to be honest with you. MacMichael told how his engine was checked out and it was discovered that the power output was not nearly as high as he thought, “Got it dynoed this week and found out it doesn’t nearly have the horsepower we thought it did,” he added, “I’m putting in an engine with 50 more horse next week and it’s legal!” With MacMichael’s recent run of gilded form, one is left to wonder if changing anything is a good idea, there is no room for error now as the calendar turns to September.

The Lightning Stocks had the final race of the night and for the fans who stayed to see the end of the show, they were rewarded with one the best races of the season. A tie atop the point standings saw CJ Johnson and Tim LeBlanc looking to get a nose out in front for the inside track to the point’s title. However, early on in this one, Johnson’s car got mixed up with a pack as they bounced off one another. Johnson’s car may have bounced up into the front stretch wall, knocking his car out of contention as he brought the car home in last place.

LeBlanc had the opposite showing as his #52 raced to the front. Last week’s winner Richard Whipple had the lead early on, but LeBlanc was on a rail as he reeled Whipple in. LeBlanc crossed the line first bringing home the checkered flag ahead of Whipple and Kris Kristolaitis.

In the Mini Stocks, Julia Raymond out wheeled DJ Lazelle and Cameron Sontag to claim victory for the second time this year.
“I’ve never got two wins in one year,” she said after her win, “I’m pretty excited.”

Another exciting race this past Saturday was the Thunder Stock feature. The top two in points last year are battling it out for the championship once again as defending champion Marshall Usher tries to maintain his slender advantage over David Greenslit. On Saturday, Greenslit got the better of Usher as he out wheeled his rival for another victory. The two leaders were challenging only each other as they got by Paul Barnard and James Nowakowski to get ahead of the field. As they took the white flag, Usher was pushing Greenslit hard down the front stretch into turn one, but driving a bit too hard into the turn, he had to yield allowing Greenslit the space he needed to hold Usher off for the win.

In the Super Stock main event, the win went to Chris Curtis for the 2nd week in a row. There were a few too many yellow flags, as some drivers had issues with keeping their cars facing the right direction, but Curtis took the point on the last double file restart and made it stick. Joel Monahan led the first 13 laps before Curtis overtook him and claimed victory.

In the Young Guns division, Alexander Pearl took home his third win of the year. It also happened to be his third win in a row, as the youth driver has come into his own the last three weeks. With the influx of former Young Guns drivers in the Whelen All-American series that run weekly at Monadnock, there is no doubt another class of drivers waiting to move up to higher divisions. Pearl might be the most impressive of the group, with the fashion in which he has dominated the last three weeks. It certainly didn’t take long for the young man to find the fastest way around the ¼ mile track.

In the visiting Pro 4 Modified race, Andy Major picked up his 4th win of the year, out dueling Derek Robie and Randy Clark Jr. Mark Charette finished first in the Pro 4 Lite division ahead of Doug Maservey, Jr. and Bill Lucchesi, Jr.

Next week the NEMA Midgets come to the high banks of Monadnock Speedway for a special night. It will be the Iron Mike Memorial/ Shane Hammond Memorial event for the NEMAs next week.

Two-time Valenti Modified Racing Series champion Chris Pasteryak of Jewett City, CT, dominated Saturday’s running of the ‘Oxford 100’ to become the seventh different winner in seven races at Oxford Plains Speedway, Oxford, Maine. The race was the headline event on the eve of the 42nd running of the famed ‘Oxford 250.’

Pasteryak from his pole starting position led all but 20-laps enroute to his fourth VMRS win this season and his 10th career victory. He is now tied for fourth with Rowan Pennink, each with 10 wins, on the series all-time win list.

“Sorry I stunk up the show,” Pasteryak kidded in victory lane referring to his dominating performance. “ On 250 weekend I think it might have been 1999 or 2001 Cassius Clark beat me on a restart with three to go in a legends car, we came here (2011) and Joe Doucette beat me with three laps to go, I didn’t want to let anyone get close enough tonight to beat me,” said a smiling Pasteryak.

Pasteryak led the first seven laps of the 100-lap race when Nashua, NH, veteran Norman Wrenn slipped by and held the lead until lap 27 when Pasteryak regained the top position and never looked back.

“I figured if Norman wanted to go burn it up I’d let him. I knew we were pretty good taking it easy behind him. This Troyer car and Hutter motor really made me look good. It was a good night to have a good night.” Pasteryak said.

Kevin Ianarelli, of Groton, MA, had a career best finish nailing down second after being pursued heavily by Les Hinckley in the late stages of the race.

“It was pretty hooked up for a change. Every time we got to Chris he had a little more in the bank,” Ianarelli said in post race interviews. “We were not going to touch him.”

Ianarelli also knew Hinckley was on the prowl. “They told me he was about five lengths back. Another 10-laps he probably would have got me we were starting to back it into the corners. This Troyer car and Billy The Kid motor really got it done for me.”

Hinckley, the Windsor Locks, CT, driver who returned to competition with a victory at Monadnock Speedway last week was not going to Oxford until the cell phone rang this week. On the other end was Gary Casella, owner of the #25 modified driven by Rowan Pennink when he is not committed elsewhere. More often this season than in the past, Pennink has had conflicting dates leaving the seat open in Casella’s car forcing the veteran car owner to shop around for a driver for his racer. Hinckley welcomed the opportunity and drove to a solid third place finish.

Hinckley was complimentary in victory lane. “Gary and I got together for a one race deal to have some fun. Gary has great equipment and I can’t thank him and Kim (Casella) enough for giving me the opportunity. Would have liked to see a caution there at the end and see if we could have mixed it up a little bit but we had plenty of laps to get there. Good run – good piece – last minute deal and it was a lot of fun.”

Russ Hersey, of Swanzey, NH, made a late race charge to finish fourth with veteran Donnie Lashua, of Canaan, NH, rounding out the top five. Sixth through tenth were series newcomer Matt Swanson, Jon McKennedy, Dennis Perry, Wrenn, and Todd Patnode.

Race

Notes: 24 cars entered the Oxford event. 15-year-old Matt Swanson enjoyed a successful debut.

Timed very well in practice sessions, ran in the top five in the feature, raced side by side with Jon McKennedy for

many laps. David Schneider and crew flew in for the race from Long Island

and were picked up and flown back at the conclusion of the race. An airport is adjacent to the speedway property.

Glen Luce of Turner scored an emotional victory, and a $30,000-plus payday, in Sunday’s 42nd Annual AIM Recycling USA Oxford 250 at Oxford Plains Speedway.

For Luce, who once finished second to NASCAR star Kevin Harvick in the annual classic, it was not only a career highlight, but a dream come true for someone who grew up at the historic Maine racetrack.

After drawing a dead-last starting spot in his heat race, Luce worked his way into fourth place, earning the 22nd starting position in the 250. Twice he worked his way into contention before pitting for tires, first for a pair, later for a full, fresh set.

After outgunning Berwick’s Joey Doiron for the lead, Luce outran Manchester teenager Reid Lanpher to the checkered flag. For both Luce and Lanpher it was a career-best PASS Super Late Model finish, coming in the biggest-paying race of the year.

Luce and Lanpher were chased to the checkered flag by Ben Lynch, a New Hampshire native now living in North Carolina. Six-time PASS North Super Late Model champion Johnny Clark of Farmingdale ended up in fourth position. The top five was filled out by 50-lap last chance race winner Joey Polewarczyk, Jr., who started the 250-lapper in 34th position.

Cassius Clark earned a sixth-place finish in the Rollie MacDonald 13. Wayne Helliwell, Jr ended up in seventh after leading more than half the race, earning a hefty bonus in lap leader awards. Helliwell also turned in the fastest lap of the race. Rounding out the top ten were Corey Bubar of Windham, David Oliver of Standish and East Parsonsfield’s Trevor Sanborn.

Evan Armington of Lovell won the 25-lap race for OPS Mods on Saturday night and then backed that up with a 40-lap victory for PASS Modified tour points on Sunday afternoon in the Pro All Stars Series lone open-wheel series.

Armington was chased under the checkered flag by reigning series champion Andy Shaw of Center Conway, New Hampshire, driving the Sumner Sessions 0. Jimmy Emerson of Windham led the early stages of the race, finishing up in third position. Ryan Robbins of Dixfield and Newburgh’s Scott Alexander rounded out the top five.

Josh Childs of Oxford won for the second straight night in Allen’s Coffee Flavored Brandy Street Stock competition, outrunning Bryce Mains of Naples to the checkered flag. Dan Brown of Peru earned the third-place trophy, in front of Turner’s Calvin Rose, Jr. and David Whittier of Poland.

Ryan Kuhn of East Bridgewater, Massachusetts raced to his first-ever INEX Legends Cars win. Kuhn outgunned Jolicure, New Brunswick competitor Corey Hall for the victory, with Hall claiming runner-up honors after leading most of the 25-lapper. Nicholas Naugle of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia finished third for the second straight night at OPS. Early race leader Austin Teras of Windham ended up in fourth place, followed by Emily Meehan of Rawdon Gold Mines, Nova Scotia.

David Cook of Livermore Falls started from the pole and led all the way in a special, 50-lap race for the MacDonald Motors Runnin’ Rebel class. Kyle Hewins of Leeds won an entertaining, race-long battle for runner-up honors with the winner’s brother, Derek Cook of Livermore Falls. Matthew Mahar of Buckfield and Auburn’s Cody Childs rounded out the top five in an event with a lot of paint-swapping throughout the top ten.

Double stock car racing features produced double the drama at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Friday, August 28, at the annual Sugar & Spice/Jones’ Donuts “Double Stack Night” event. Eight feature races were run for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series presented by Yandow Sales & Service and John Deere along with the fourth annual “Great North American Pancake Eating Championship.”

Championship hopefuls Vince Quenneville Jr. and Ron Proctor continued their red-hot fight for the title in the Bond Auto Parts Modified division by running in lockstep in both features. Brandon, VT veteran Quenneville made the first move by winning the opening 20-lap sprint race for the Modifieds with Proctor taking the runner-up spot. Leon Gonyo finished third, followed by Greg Atkins and Billy Lussier.

In the nightcap, Codie Aubin of Plattsburgh, NY continued his late-summer streak of success with his first-ever victory at Devil’s Bowl after holding off a constant challenge from Greg Atkins. Proctor finished third with Quenneville on his rear bumper. Jimmy Ryan – who flipped his car in the opening race and received help from teams across all four Devil’s Bowl divisions while making repairs – led laps early and finished fifth.

Quenneville’s win in the first race drew him even in the point battle with Proctor in a temporary tie for the lead, but Charlton, NY racer Proctor edged back ahead by just two points following the second feature. With three feature races remaining in the season for the Modifieds, Proctor leads Quenneville 749-747. Atkins is still alive in the chase as well, with 710 points.

Josh Masterson of Bristol, VT brought the “new winners” streak to a definitive end in the Central Vermont Motorcycles Late Model division by sweeping both features. The Late Models had not seen a repeat winner through the first nine races of the season, but Masterson grabbed his second and third wins of the year.

Steve Miller of Vergennes, VT led early in the opening 25-lap race before Masterson scooted past him on the outside lane. Miller held tight to Masterson’s rear bumper over the balance of the race but settled for the runner-up spot. Todd Stone was third with Seth Bridge a career-best fourth and Bobby Therrien fifth.

The second race, a 30-lapper, saw former track champion Chris Bergeron of Claremont, NH lead every step of the way until the race’s only caution period with six laps remaining. Masterson had driven through traffic to stalk Bergeron, then rocketed past him on the restart to take the lead and complete the two-win sweep. Bergeron finished second ahead of Robert Bryant Jr., Stone, and Therrien.

Masterson’s victories turned a rough two-week slide around and helped him rebuild his lead in the championship race; he paces Bryant by 49 points, 607-558. Stone is third, another 16 markers back.

Title rivals Robert Gordon and Scott FitzGerald split the twin 15-lap features in the Brileya’s Chrysler-Jeep Renegade division. Gordon, of Milton, VT, took the lead from Don Franklin early in the opening race and drove away for his sixth win. FitzGerald ran second, followed by Dylan Rabtoy, Jimmy Bushey, and Franklin.

West Rutland, VT racer FitzGerald topped the second race, but had all he could handle from Rabtoy and Gordon in the final laps. The trio finished in three-wide formation with Rabtoy second and Gordon third, followed by Franklin and Jared Blake. FitzGerald’s win backs up his first career asphalt victory one week ago.

Though FitzGerald made incremental improvement in the point standings, Gordon still holds a 31-point advantage (657-626) entering the final two weeks of the season.

Chuck Bradford of Addison, VT matched Masterson’s two-win sweep in the Portland Glass Mini Stock division to extend his victory streak to five consecutive races. Bradford started last in each race and worked his way through traffic each time, saving his best for the final laps in each 15-lap race. He took the lead from Chris LaVair with only four laps remaining in the opening race, and led only the final two laps of the second run after a late pass of John McCarron.

Bradford beat LaVair, rookie Brad Bertrand, McCarron, and Kyle Sorensen to win the first feature, then topped McCarron, LaVair, Bertrand, and Sorensen in order in the final race. LaVair – who also won five-straight earlier in the season – continues to hold the point lead by 46 markers (646-600) over Bradford.

Sugar & Spice Restaurant of Mendon, VT hosted the fan-favorite fourth annual “Great North American Pancake Eating Championship” at intermission with a field of more than 25 contestants in two age groups. Malcolm Woodward defended his title in the “heavyweight” division by eating 11 pancakes with pure Vermont maple syrup in just five minutes; it was Woodward’s third-straight victory. Six year-old Alex Messer won the “junior” division title with four-and-a-half pancakes.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway’s half-mile asphalt oval is back in action with the rescheduled Heritage Family Credit Union “Member Night” on Friday, September 4. All HFCU members will be admitted free of charge with proof of membership.

Josh Sunn leads the way as the action returns to The Dirt Track at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Sunday, August 30 at 6:00 p.m. Interstate All Battery Center of Rutland and Sherwin-Williams Paints of Rutland present a full program for the five-event Berlin Optical Expressions Dirt Track Series, featuring Sportsman Modifieds, Renegades, Mini Stocks, and the

Lucas Oil POWRi Outlaw Midget Series.

White River Junction, VT racer Sunn – a weekly competitor at Bear Ridge Speedway – has been arguably the best performer at the tight 3/10-mile Dirt Track since its opening last fall. Though he has yet to win in his five feature starts to date, Sunn has collected four finishes of either second or third place. He leads the point standings in the Liberty Street Discount Beverage & Deli Sportsman Modified division after the first two races of the 2015 season with a pair of runner-up showings.

The balance of the top 10 drivers is made up of pieces from many tracks in the region. Multi-time Accord (NY) Speedway champion Jackie Brown Jr. ranks second after finishes of fourth and sixth in the first two events. Bear Ridge regular Tim Hodge is third overall with legendary New York Capital District racer Kenny Tremont Jr. fourth. New Hampshire’s Robbie LaCroix, Allan Hammond, and Todd Buckwold – all regulars at Legion Speedway – sit 5-6-7 in points, followed by Albany-Saratoga (NY) Speedway’s Jack Gentile, and Devil’s Bowl asphalt regulars Billy Lussier and Vince Quenneville Jr.

Feature winners Darrell Older and Curtis Condon lead the Renegade division standings, followed closely by Matt Mosher; the trio is separated by just two points. The Portland Glass Mini Stocks have seen Jesse Durkee and Justin Severance visit victory lane, and they also sit just two points apart atop the standings.

The Lucas Oil POWRi Outlaw Midget Series debuts on Sunday featuring quick, lightweight, open-cockpit cars. Top runners include Rhode Island drivers Frank Malec and Lauryn Burd, Connecticut’s Dean Christensen and Jamie Spaulding, and Massachusetts youngsters Seth Carlson and Tim Gallant. Midget cars last visited Devil’s Bowl in 1984, when USAC legend Mel Kenyon won on the former dirt half-mile.
