NEW ENGLAND MOTORSPORTS SOUTH FOR SEPT 2ND 2015
By Lou Modestino

OTB Promotions and Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park (TSMP) have announced the addition of four Late Model practice sessions to the Saturday schedule of the Stock Car Road Race Challenge on September 11th and 12th. Though they will not be participating in competitive laps, the sessions will give Late Model teams an ideal opportunity to test car set-up and driving techniques on the newly re-opened 1.7 mile road course at TSMP.

Multi-time Late Model champion, Rick Gentes, will be among several other Late Model teams taking advantage of the practice sessions. “I don’t have any experience with this kind of racing, but my chassis builder has a good idea of how to set up the car for the road course.” Gentes stated. “If anything it will be more me than the car that needs to adapt to driving on the road course.”

The Late Models will be joining the North East Mini Stock Tour, North East Street Stock Tour, Mr. Rooter New England Truck Series, and the TSMP Mini Stocks for the 2-day event. The Stock Car Road Race Challenge will see the first competitive stock car laps on the road course, since it re-opened last year, and is being looked forward to by teams and spectators alike.

Randy Cabral ended a victory lane dry spell in convincing fashion this past Saturday evening in NEMA’s triumphant return to the Webber family’s Star Speedway. Cabral won the NEMA Lites feature in dramatic fashion with two laps to go, and captured the NEMA feature in convincing fashion.

In the Lites race, a first lap altercation between Dennis O’Brien and Danny Cugini sent Cugini’s badly damaged race car off on the hook, and Cugini was badly bruised up in the incident. When the race resumed, Paul Scally, looking for his first Lites victory, stormed out into the lead. Scally would be hotly pursued by Cabral in his family owned #35.

As the laps wound down, and the duo approached lapped traffic, Cabral began to catch Scally, as they caught the #41 of Meg Cugini. With two laps to go, Scally looked high on Cugini, and Cabral stormed to the bottom, taking both Cugini and taking over the lead from Scally. Hard charger, Anthony Payne inserted into the mix, also getting by Scally for second. Cabral would take down the victory, and would be followed by new points leader Payne, Scally, Scott Bigelow and ISMA Super Modified Standout, Chris Perley.

In the NEMA feature, Cabral, scheduled to start sixth, would end up starting in the fifth spot, after heat winner Avery Stoehr’s car would not fire prior to the initial green. When the green flag flew, Cabral wasted no time rocketing into the lead. Alan Chambers, in the Chambers #7, would pursue Cabral, but by the halfway point, Cabral had stretched his lead out to over a straightaway.

As the laps ticked down, NEMA competitors hoped for a caution, but the race went green to checkered, with Cabral taking down his first win of the season in convincing style. The Chambers family occupied the podium with Cabral, with Alan Chambers finishing second, followed by last week’s winner Jim Chambers in third. Seth Carlson finished fourth, followed by John Zych Jr., Paul Scally, Matt O’Brien, Pete Pernesiglio, Doug Cleveland and Jim Santa Maria.

Cabral’s win ties him with Dave Humphrey’s long standing record of sixteen consecutive seasons with a feature win, and also brings him to within twenty six points of current standings leader, John Zych Jr.

“I won this race last year, and on the way home, I found out that my uncle Bobby had passed away. He used to call me before and after every race. Tonight I felt like he was with him – and this one was for him,” said an elated Cabral. “We found some issues with the car that we think have been plaguing us all year, and hopefully we’ll have a good car for the rest of the season,” he said.

In NEMA’s Sundown Showdown, ISMA standout, Chris Perley, blasted out into the lead and never looked back. He took down the special event over Anthony Payne and Avery Stoehr.

“NEMA thanks the Webber family for having us back. We are very excited about our 2016 partnership and four dates at the race track,” said NEMA President Russ Stoehr.

NEMA returns to Monadnock Speedway for the Iron Mike Memorial this coming Saturday night.

PAIVA HOLDS OFF MURPHY FOR SPORT TRUCKS WIN

After two early-race cautions, at Seekonk Speedway, the Sport Trucks feature ran caution free from lap two through the lap 25 checkers with John Paiva coming on with one-third of the laps remaining to deprive Mike Cavallaro of the lead and rush on through the remaining eight laps to Victory Lane. Cavallaro had one lap previous deprived leading rookie on the division, Eric LeBrun of his fifteen lap stint in the lead.

Rob Murphy then cruised in to edge Cavallaro out of second and Chase Belcher sat Mike in third. Late in the race, points leader David Lougee pried Cavallaro out of fourth. LeBrun had gone from the pole to the lead, and Joseph Fortin II got under Dan Johnson into second. But Mike Duarte had come out of the box to spin at the stripe, bringing the field back for a complete restart. The spin had been a mechanical problem which sent Duarte to the sidelines.

Again LeBrun grabbed the lead before Johnson spun sideways in turn four, taking a big hit from Bob Rainville, sending them both to the pits and ending their nights. LeBrun once again secured the lead but Lougee spun on lap two, from fluid he was leaking. He went to the pits, but dropped a lot of fluid, which initiated a major cleanup with speedy dry, lasting 20 minutes. The delay was long enough that Lougee’s crew was able to correct the fault and get him back out just as the field hit the starting box.

As LeBrun continued to lead Cavallaro, Murphy followed Paiva and Church stayed tight on Mufphy’s bumper

LeBrun outran Fortin and Cavallaro got underneath to steal second. Murphy rushed into second with Paiva at his back. Three laps later, Paiva had displaced Murphy and was on Cavallaro’s tail. By lap 9, Paiva was looking underneath as a tight line assembled with LeBrun leading Cavallaro, Paiva, Murphy, Darryl Church and Belcher. Lougee was making up lost time and closing rapidly on the group and ran up to Belcher’s tailgate.

Paiva was working all over Cavallaro’s back end. Mike decided to lose the annoyance by going around LeBrun for the lead. As Mike cruised outside, LeBrun left space underneath and Paiva seized the moment. He got underneath, forcing a three wide with LeBrun in the middle, under Cavallaro. They went three wide through turns three and four until LeBrun fell back leaving Cavallaro outside Paiva. Murphy ran up to Paiva’s bumper as Cavallaro fell back alongside. Belcher, Lougee and LeBrun pursued.

Murphy ran under Cavallaro with five to go and Paiva ran out to a five car lead. Murphy cleared Cavallaro and Belcher shuttled him back an additional place. Lougee then went under Cavallaro into fourth with LeBrun in sixth.

Paiva, the Triple Crown champ, claimed another feature win. Lougee’s fourth protected his slim lead over Belcher and Murphy.

Rounding out the top ten were: Church, Ed Perry, and Shawn DeMello.

BLAIS OUTRUNS PARENT FOR LATE MODEL WIN

Austin Blais made a hard run for the money in the laps-added, double-points, Phils Triple Crown race for Late models. Blais started third, moved immediately to second, then harried leader Nick Uhrig to the halfway point of the 50-lapper before taking over the lead. Blais made it work on the outside lane. After taking over the lead, the chore grew no easier, as points leader Bobby Pelland III pulled in behind on lap 34, then was immediately replaced by Ray Parent, visiting his home track for the extra-laps feature. Parent scissored after Blais for the final 15 laps, but the contender for leading rookie had the race in hand.

Parent took second in a close finish that saw him looking underneath in the final turns but unable to work past. Uhrig finished third and collected the Phil’s Propane Triple Crown championship for Late Models. Uhrig leads Blais in the rookie competition.

Fourth went to Uhrig’s Team V mate, Ryan Vanasse, again visiting his old division for the extra laps feature while Dylan Estrella rounded out the top five.

Uhrig assumed the pole when original polesitter TJ Moreshead ran into stalling problems and had to be assisted, forcing him from the pole to a rear-end start on the race. And Uhrig went immediately into the lead. Blais started behind Uhrig and was quickly past Mark Hudson and into second, while Pelland climbed from fifth to third. He ran under Blais, who put up a fight on the outside as Gerry DeGasparre, Jr. moved into fourth.

As Hudson drifted back, Nick Johnson moved into fifth on DeGasparre’s tail and three laps later, Parent moved into position behind him. Ryan Vanasse was having difficulties early in the race and edged backward over the first quarter of the race. Charlie Rose had started eleventh, but was cutting his way upward through the field, falling in behind Parent on lap 14, in seventh position.

By lap 20, Uhrig had Blais on his bumper but they were alone, as there was a twelve-car space back to DeGAsparre who was working with Johnson on his bumper. Parent was pursuing and lap 20 saw Dylan Estrella arrive in seventh just behind Parent. Estrella moved Rose out of seventh and Rob Murphy, doing double duty, slid onto Rose’s bumper.

The field was running a very tight line as Blais went to Uhrig’s outside for the pass. Blais would not or could not drop back in and pressured Uhrig lap after lap. Lap 25 saw Blais edging ahead and finally into the lead, but remaining in the second groove with the centrifugal force built up in the pass. Uhring ran hard in the low groove as Blais finally settled in.

But the smooth, fast race began to encounter some uneven territory as John Mahoney spun in turn one, to bring the caution. Restarts on laps 32, 33 and 34 resulted in Blais coming away the leader. Pelland moved briefly into second for a challenge. Parent’s move in behind Pelland set Uhrig back to fourth. DeGasparre had fallen back during the restarts but quickly ran past Pelland, who had succumbed to Uhrig. But Vanasse was now resurgent and passed Pelland to get behind DeGasparre and then past him into fourth. Gerry held on in fifth into lap 43, when Estella gave challenge and went by and DeGasparre acquired Murphy as a chaser. Vinny Arrenegado moved into eighth on Murphy’s bumper.

The finishing order of the leaders had been established, save for a lap 49 pass by Murphy, easing DeGasparre out of sixth. Estrella and Vanasse swapped places over the final three laps, but Vanasse made the last move in side-by-side racing to hold on to fourth and Estrella claimed fifth. Sixth went to Murphy, followed by DeGasparre, Arrenegado, Dave Hutchins, Sr., Pelland, Hudson and Rose.

LALLIER DOUBLE IN STREET STOCKS AS PAUL OUTRUNS TYLER FOR THE WIN

Paul Lallier took another win in Street Stock competition, further cementing his points lead over the rest of the division. He led the final ten laps over Sam Porazzo and Kid Chaos, Corey Fanning. And then he had to watch out for the skills he’d taught his son, Tyler who spent the last three laps looking to steal Dad’s thunder. But the elder Lallier wasn’t to let that slip and powered home for the win. Tyler was second, followed by Scott Bruneau and Fanning.

The event began with Anthony Kohler zooming away from polesitter Adam Dion on the outside. Dion held him out there at first, but Kohler got the distance to settle to the low groove. Porazzo took over third with Chris Rioux on his tail. Paul was working his way forward, under Ed Flanagan, Jr.

Kohler gained a two car lead but it close back up and the lead six cars ran a tight line, nose-to-tail. Kohler, Dion, Porazzo, Rioux, Lallier and Fanning buzzed furiously around the oval. Dion looked under Kohler but had the door slammed on him. Porazzo then worked under Dion for position. Porazzo got up to Kohler’s bumper and looked under. He was able to push through into the lead out of turn four. Rioux got under Kohler and into second while Lallier followed into third after Kohler faded to fourth.. Paul Lallier then got by Rioux and Porazzo into the lead. Porazzo continued to pursue in second with Fanning on his tail. Bruneau had come up and was purusing fanning while Tyler was working on Bruneau.

A lap 20 restart saw Fanning duck under Porazzo for second briefly, but Tyler came up onto his bumper in third and then underneath as Bruneau watched. Tyler grabbed second and Bruneau forged under Fanning for third with three laps to go. Jeremy Walker and Porazzo followed Fanning. On the final circuit, Bruneau was able to overtake Fanning for third, leaving the latter in fourth. Porazzo was able to make a last minute pass of Walker for fifth. Walker finised sixth, followed by Vinny Pangelinan, Kohler, Dan Soloman and Jay Steele.

RADICAL RICK CLIMBS BACK INTO VICTORY LANE

Rick Martin fought it out over a sloppy Pro Stock race and proved that experience counts when the going gets tough. Nine cautions slowed the race, causing the forty laps to take forty minutes to run. Interruptions were frequent and 7 of the 19 competitiors were sidelined along the way.

Martin started third, fell to fourth and the fifth before picking up stride following a lap 15 restart. He then shadowed leader Ryan Lineham, getting underneath and into the lead on lap 25. Lineahm faded to eighth and The Radical One acquired a new pursuer: Kyle Casper, driving absent brother Kevin’s 88 car. Kyle had the car running hard and he both pursued Martin while holding off Craig Weinstein. But Weinstein took second on lap 31 and chased Martin to the checkers. Angelo Belsito, despite starting eighteenth, came back to grab third place ahead of Ryan Vanasse, who edged Casper on the final circuit.

Current champ Kenny Spencer III grabbed the lead right out of the box and led Bob Hussey through lap eight, A caution restart when Tom Scully Jr. spun then sent Mighty Mike Brightman to the front with Ryan Lineham on his shoulder after Spencer and Hussey went to the rear as they got together on the first attempt at a restart. Brightman got the edge on Lineham and after a couple laps side by side, Brightman had the front.

Freddy Astle mad moved into third on the lap 8 restart and now pused by Lineham on a lap 12 restart. But Astle got into Brightman, sending him pitside, not to return and Lineahm faced off with Casper. Casper got onto his bumper as Martin movedin and took second. Casper went to third with Vanasse, Weinstein and Houlihan in tow. Belsito had moved inot seventh.

Martin was able to get past Lineahm on lap 24 and Casper moved into second. Weinstein captured third and went on to pass Casper for second on lap 30. Martin had a 5-car lead by this time. Belsito got by Casper into third and the field stretched into a line of pursuit. With three to go, Vanasse went under Casper for position. They battled until Vanasse was able to move past with one lap remaining, forcing Casper to settle for fifth. Completing the top ten on the feature were Astle, Scully, Lineham, Hussey and Daryl Stampfl.

Two-time Valenti Modified Racing Series champion Chris Pasteryak of Jewett City, CT, dominated Saturday’s running of the ‘Oxford 100’ to become the seventh different winner in seven races at Oxford Plains Speedway, Oxford, Maine. The race was the headline event on the eve of the 42nd running of the famed ‘Oxford 250.’

Pasteryak from his pole starting position led all but 20-laps enroute to his fourth VMRS win this season and his 10th career victory. He is now tied for fourth with Rowan Pennink, each with 10 wins, on the series all-time win list.

“Sorry I stunk up the show,” Pasteryak kidded in victory lane referring to his dominating performance. “ On 250 weekend I think it might have been 1999 or 2001 Cassius Clark beat me on a restart with three to go in a legends car, we came here (2011) and Joe Doucette beat me with three laps to go, I didn’t want to let anyone get close enough tonight to beat me,” said a smiling Pasteryak.

Pasteryak led the first seven laps of the 100-lap race when Nashua, NH, veteran Norman Wrenn slipped by and held the lead until lap 27 when Pasteryak regained the top position and never looked back.

“I figured if Norman wanted to go burn it up I’d let him. I knew we were pretty good taking it easy behind him. This Troyer car and Hutter motor really made me look good. It was a good night to have a good night.” Pasteryak said.

Kevin Ianarelli, of Groton, MA, had a career best finish nailing down second after being pursued heavily by Les Hinckley in the late stages of the race.

“It was pretty hooked up for a change. Every time we got to Chris he had a little more in the bank,” Ianarelli said in post race interviews. “We were not going to touch him.”

Ianarelli also knew Hinckley was on the prowl. “They told me he was about five lengths back. Another 10-laps he probably would have got me we were starting to back it into the corners. This Troyer car and Billy The Kid motor really got it done for me.”

Hinckley, the Windsor Locks, CT, driver who returned to competition with a victory at Monadnock Speedway last week was not going to Oxford until the cell phone rang this week. On the other end was Gary Casella, owner of the #25 modified driven by Rowan Pennink when he is not committed elsewhere. More often this season than in the past, Pennink has had conflicting dates leaving the seat open in Casella’s car forcing the veteran car owner to shop around for a driver for his racer. Hinckley welcomed the opportunity and drove to a solid third place finish.

Hinckley was complimentary in victory lane. “Gary and I got together for a one race deal to have some fun. Gary has great equipment and I can’t thank him and Kim (Casella) enough for giving me the opportunity. Would have liked to see a caution there at the end and see if we could have mixed it up a little bit but we had plenty of laps to get there. Good run – good piece – last minute deal and it was a lot of fun.”

Russ Hersey, of Swanzey, NH, made a late race charge to finish fourth with veteran Donnie Lashua, of Canaan, NH, rounding out the top five. Sixth through tenth were series newcomer Matt Swanson, Jon McKennedy, Dennis Perry, Wrenn, and Todd Patnode.

Race

Notes: 24 cars entered the Oxford event. 15-year-old Matt Swanson enjoyed a successful debut.

Timed very well in practice sessions, ran in the top five in the feature, raced side by side with Jon McKennedy for

many laps. David Schneider and crew flew in for the race from Long Island

and were picked up and flown back at the conclusion of the race. An airport is adjacent to the speedway property.

Racing returned to the shoreline oval, with 6 divisions taking to the track, including the North East Street Stock Tour visiting for the first time. Corey Coates was victorious in The Limited Sportsman feature. In Legends action, it was Dana DiMatteo taking the checkered flag. Corey Barry continued his hot streak and won the SK Light feature. Diego Monahan won his 2nd feature of the season in thrilling fashion in the SK Modified feature. Larry Loomis picked up his first career win in the Mini Stock feature.

Depending on who you talk to, Diego Monahan has been involved in the 3 best finishes in recent SK Modified history. Monahan, who is the divisions point leader in what has to be the tightest points race in recent memory at the Bowl, fought an epic battle of horsepower from the drop of the green flag. Monahan, who started 6th, moved up to 2nd by lap 7 with Tyler Chadwick hot on his rear bumper. Monahan chased leader Dylan Izzo for 8 laps, when caution came out after Ryan Morgan made contact with the backstretch wall. On the ensuing restart, it was Izzo on the inside, Monahan on the outside, Chadwick, and Ted Christopher, who is 6th in points, just 30 back of Monahan, on the outside of the 2nd row.
Monahan powered his way into the lead on the restart with Christopher glued to his bumper. Caution came out again on lap 13 after Dennis Gada, driving in place of his son Joey Gada, made hard contact with the turn 3 wall. Monahan held the lead on the restart, with Keith Rocco moving into 2nd past Christopher.

Monahan and Rocco battled side-by-side, with Christopher right in the mix. Christopher passed Rocco and began to work on Monahan with 10 to go. Christopher pulled along side Monahan with 4 laps remaining, and used every trick in the bag to try to pass him. Monahan was able to withstand numerous challenges from Christopher in the closing laps to take home the win. Following Monahan across the line was Christopher, Rocco, Chadwick, and Paul Kusheba.

In the Limited Sportsman feature, Coates led from the green flag, but had to survive 3 restarts and a challenge from his father, Allen Coates, to take the win. The first restart came just 2 laps in, when Brandon Plemons and Josh Galvin made contact, sending them both into the turn 3 wall. On the restart, Coates battled Jason Chicolas for 3 lapsbefore taking sole possession of the lead, while Allen Coates picked his way past Chicolas to move into second and challenge his son for the lead. Allen Coates brought out the 2nd caution while battling side-by-side for the lead, his rear end broke, forcing him to come to a stop in turn 2. Corey Coates went on to win, followed by Norm Root Jr., Ed Gertsch, Joey Ferrigno, and Chicolas.

Montville’s Josh Galvin, who wrecked hard earlier in the Limited Sportsman feature, repaired the car and was triumphant in the North East Street Stock Tour feature. Galvin, the reigning Speedbowl Limited Sportsman champion, came through the field with a vengeance and took the early lead, then checked out from the pack. Chris “Moose” Douton, also a former Speedbowl champion, finished 2nd, with Jim Boyle finishing 3rd.

DiMatteo won in dominating fashion, in a race that went green checker. He took the lead on lap 2 and was never challenged. Mike Flynn, Cory DiMatteo, John O’Sullivan, and Joey Ternullo capped off the top 5. Corey Barry continued his dominance in the SK Light division, picking his way through traffic and leading the final 19 circuits to claim the victory. Joey Ferrigno, Paul Buzel, Calvin Therrien, and David Arute rounded out the top 5. Loomis started on the front row and had to withstand 4 cautions to claim the victory in the Mini Stock feature. Ray Christian III, Mark Panaroni, Doug Curry, and Wayne Burroughs were the rest of the top 5.

Next on the schedule for the New London-Waterford Speedbowl is the season finale for the Thursday Night Thunder series, on September 3rd. Super X car, Legend car, and X-Car points championships are all on the line. The Bandolero division championship was locked up last week by Nickolas Hovey.

Sometimes it’s good to be at the right place at the right time and that was true for Sergio Pena Saturday in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Biscuitville 125 at Virginia International Raceway.

Pena driving the No. 42 Special Smiles Pediatric Dentistry Toyota for REV Racing, took advantage of a couple of cars going off course during the final green-white-checkered attempt to collect his fifth career win.

With the 22-year-old Westminster, Virginia, native’s win, REV Racing has won at least one victory in six consecutive K&N East seasons dating back to 2010.

Pena started fifth on the final restart on Lap 59 and moved up to third after leader Austin Hill spun in Turn 1 allowing Dalton Sargeant to take the lead. Sargeant would also spin out while leading in Turn 7 which put Grala and Pena in the battle for the lead.

The two made contact and Pena was able to use the inside line to stay out front and score the win in just his third start of the season while filling in for Jay Beasley while he receives medical treatment.

Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender David Garbo Jr. followed Grala in third for his first career podium finish with fellow rookie Collin Cabre coming home fourth. J.J. Haley, who led for six laps, completed the top five.

Hill, who rebounded from an early spin to make his way back to the front before his final spin, rebounded to finish sixth with Nick Drake, Dale Quarterly, Sargeant and points leader William Byron rounding out the top 10.

Defending race winner Scott Heckert, started the race from the pole position and led the race on three different occasions, but suffered a broken rear end on Lap 46 to finished 15th and allowed Byron to build his points lead to 15 points with two races remaining on the schedule.

The Biscuitville 150 will air on NBCSN on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m.

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East returns to the track UNOH 100 at Richmond International Raceway on Thursday, Sept. 10th.

Josh Galvin becomes the fifth different winner in six races on the North East Street Stock Tour, as he picked up the victory in the A-1 Auto Center/Stebbins Discount Stump Grinding event at New London-Waterford Speedbowl.

Galvin started on the pole of the 35-lap feature, but was quickly overtaken by former track champion Chris Douton. The battle would ensue again on lap 7, as Galvin fought his way back to the lead. Another former track champion, Jim Boyle joined the battle, as the top three began to break away from the pack. Boyle made a move to challenge Douton, and the two were side-by-side for numerous laps, which allowed Galvin to open a sizable lead.

While Douton and Boyle fought for position, Patrick Tanguay, Geoff Rollins, and Bryan Town joined the fray, creating a five-car battle at the front. Douton was able to close the distance on Galvin as the field made their way through lapped traffic, but Galvin proved to be too strong, capturing the win in the caution-free event.

Galvin explained “The car was different than it was in the heat, but I didn’t waste too much time, and was able to figure out how to get the thing around again, and go back by Moose [Douton], and capitalize on that, and get the win.”

While Galvin ended the day well, his day did not start the same. Galvin ran in the weekly Limited Sportsman division, but retired from the event early, due to an on-track incident.

“Just settling for a top five would’ve been fun enough for us,” added Galvin. “To add the wreck in the thing, we didn’t even think we’d make the show. We just kept working, and we don’t quit.”

Douton held on to finish second, while celebrating his wife’s birthday. He continued “Josh Galvin had a good run. We were a little loose, because we were struggling all day, but we got it pretty close.”

Commenting on the comradery of the Tour, Douton exclaimed “I didn’t expect to join a Strictly Stock tour, and be with such a good bunch of guys.”

Jim Boyle finished a season-best third in front of his home crowd. Even with his finish, Boyle felt he left a little on the table, explaining “I was actually anticipating a bit better of a finish. If it hadn’t been Moose [Douton] in front of me, it would’ve been a different situation, but he’s always run me clean, and I’m going to give him the same respect he’s given me.”

Tanguay and Rollins would settle for the fourth and fifth spots. Bryan Town held on for the sixth spot, with Anthony Belfiore finishing seventh. Frank L’Etoile, Jr., Joe Arena, and Jack Aquilina rounded out the top ten. Douton and Town picked up heat victories.

The North East Street Stock Tour will be back in action on September 11-12, as part of the Stock Car Road Race Challenge, on the 1.7-mile road course at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park.

Justin Bonsignore joined elite company Saturday night when he drove to a NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season sweep of events at Riverhead Raceway.

Bonsignore grabbed the lead from Doug Coby on Lap 115 and held on through six caution restarts to take down a third career victory at his home track, and second in two tries in 2015.

A 12th and final caution came out on Lap 199 just after Bonsignore had taken the white flag in his No. 51 M3 Technology Chevrolet, and he came around to a yellow-checkered. It was the eighth career victory overall for the Holtsville, New York native.

In the process he became just the fifth driver in 31 years of Whelen Modified Tour racing to sweep a season at the venerable Long Island bullring.

Coby and his No. 2 Dunleavy’s Repair/A&J Romano Construction Chevrolet finished second, while rookie Chase Dowling, Donny Lia and Eric Goodale rounded out the top-five.

Tom Rogers Jr – who won his second-consecutive Coors Light Pole Award at Riverhead earlier in the day – finished sixth.

Woody Pitkat, championship points leader Ryan Preece, Todd Szegedy and rookie Jeff Goodale completed the top-10.

Pitkat gained one point on Preece, who now leads by a single tally with three races remaining on the schedule.

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 26 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the F.W. Webb 100.

Stafford Speedway returned to NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing action with the Lincoln Tech Back 2 SK®ool Blitz. Taking down feature wins on the night was Ronnie Williams in the SK Modified® feature, Tom Fearn in the Late Model feature, Payton Henry in the SK Light feature, Al Saunders in the Ltd. Late Model feature, Brandon Michael in the DARE Stock feature, and Devin O’Connell in the Legend Cars feature.

In the 40-lap SK Modified® feature event, Matt Galko set the early pace with Ted Christopher and Eric Berndt behind him. Keith Rocco quickly moved into fourth and Rowan Pennink got by Jeremy Sorel to move up to fifth.

Berndt made a move to the inside of Christopher to take second on lap-4 and Rocco was right on his bumper looking to follow suit. Rocco pulled alongside Christopher and he took over third on lap-6. Pennink was now on the inside of Christopher and looking to take fourth but Christopher was able to hold him off.

On lap-10, Ryan Preece moved his way past Christopher to move into fifth after starting ninth. Pennink was up to fourth as Galko was still leading Berndt and Rocco. Ronnie Williams got by Christopher to take sixth.

Rocco made his move to take over second on lap-17 and Pennink was now side by side with Berndt in a duel for third. This allowed Preece and Williams to close right in on their bumpers. Rocco continued his charge as he went by Galko on lap-19 to take over the race lead. Pennink was third with Preece fourth and Berndt and Williams were side by side for fifth.

Galko came back strong on the inside of Rocco on lap-20 and they ran side by side for a lap before Galko retook the lead at the line to complete lap-21. Just as the field completed lap-21, Joey Cipriano’s car came to a stop on the backstretch to bring the caution out.

Galko took the lead back under green while Pennink took second, but only briefly as Williams was on his inside and they were side by side for the spot. Williams took second and he made a move to the inside of Galko and he took the lead at the line as they completed lap-24. Pennink was third with Rocco and Preece making up the top-5. Preece spun in turn 2 and collected Berndt to bring the caution out with 26 laps complete.

Williams took the lead while Pennink and Galko were side by side for second and Woody Pitkat was side by side with Todd Owen for fourth. Pennink took second with Galko slotting into third. Pitkat got the better of his duel with Owen and took fourth.

As the laps began to wind down, Pennink looked like he had a stronger car getting into the corner than Williams, but Williams would stretch out his advantage once they came off the corners. The two leaders were leaving Galko behind, who was in turn all by himself as Pitkat and Owen were side by side for fourth. Williams led Pennink to the checkered flag to pick up his sixth win of the season. Galko finished third, with Pitkat beating Owen to the line by a nose for fourth place.

In the 30-lap Late Model feature event, Josh Wood went from fifth to the lead on the opening lap of the race. Michael Bennett followed him to the front and settled into second with Ed Ricard third, Michael Scorzelli fourth, and Tom Fearn fifth. Rich Hammann hit the turn 3 wall to bring the caution out with 2 laps complete.

Wood powered into the lead on the restart with Bennett holding off a challenge from Ricard to remain in second. Fearn pulled alongside Ricard as they completed lap 3 and he took over third in turn 1 of lap 4. Skip Breunig was fifth with Tommy Butler and Kevin Gambacorta lined up right behind him.

Fearn was beginning to apply pressure to the bumper of Bennett for second while Breunig slid back several spots to seventh place as Gambacorta took fifth and Scorzelli moved up to sixth. Fearn got around Bennett to move into second on lap-8 while Wood continued to lead the race.

Gambacorta took over fourth place from Ricard on lap-16 and Scorzelli nearly dropped Ricard back to sixth, but Ricard was able to hold off his challenge. As the leaders completed lap -25, it was a 3-car train in a fight for the lead with Wood leading Fearn and Bennett.

Fearn tried for two laps to make a move in turn 3 before he was able to finally make a pass stick on lap-28. Now Bennett was all over Wood’s bumper as Fearn was pulling away. Fearn led the trio back to the checkered flag to pick up his eighth win of the season. Bennett made a last ditch effort in turns 3+4 but Wood was able to hold him off for second. Gambacorta finished fourth with Scorzelli rounding out the top-5.

In the 20-lap SK Light Modified feature event, Geoff Boisjolie and Jay Goff were racing hard side by side for the lead on the opening lap and the caution came out with 1 lap on the scoreboard as Kyle Jette spun in turn 1 and Joey Ferrigno got caught in the high lane as Jette came back up the track. Mark Alkas also spun trying to avoid Jette and Daniel Wesson came to a stop in turn 2 and had to be towed off the track.

Jay Goff powered by Boisjolie on the restart to move into the lead. Tony Membrino, Jr. was on the outside of Boisjolie for second when Boisjolie spun coming off turn 2 to bring the caution out with 2 laps complete.

Glenn Griswold took a ride through the infield grass on the backstretch on the restart but he was able to keep his car moving and he rejoined at the rear of the field as the race stayed green. Membrino was the leader with Payton Henry getting around Goff to move into second. Bob Charland and Nick Salva were side by side for fourth place with Salva taking the place on lap-7.

The caution came out with 12 laps complete as Alkas and Goff spun in opposite ends of the track. Back under green, Henry was challenging Membrino on the outside for the lead and Salva nearly made it 3-wide but backed out and fell back into line in third. The caution came back out with 14 laps complete as Charland spun and hit the frontstretch wall and Todd Douillard spun. Henry took the lead from Membrino on the restart and Stephen Kopcik moved into second with Membrino falling back to third. Salva was challenging Membrino for fourth place when the caution came out with 15 laps complete for a spin by Kyle Trayner.

Henry took the lead back under green with Kopcik and Salva battling side by side for second. Membrino was foruth with D.J. Burnham and Cory Casagrande side by side for fifth. Salva took second and Burnham was now on the outside of Kopcik as the field took the white flag. Henry took his second consecutive win with Salva, Membrino, Kopcik, and Burnham rounding out the top-5.

In the 20-lap Limited Late Model feature event, David Comeau took the lead after a first lap side by side battle with Robert Bloxsom. Paul Arute moved to the inside of Bloxsom for second on lap-3 and Al Saunders pulled alongside Bloxsom in a fight for third with Duane Provost right behind them. Al Saunders went by Paul Arute on lap-6 to move into second and Provost followed him through as Arute fell back to fourth. Bloxsom continued to run in fifth, just in front of David Arute. Saunders made a move to the inside of Comeau as they crossed the start/finish line to complete lap-12 and he took over the race lead. Provost followed him past as Comeau fell back to third with Paul Arute, Bloxsom, David Arute, and Andrew Hayes right behind them. Justin Bren and Glenn Bartkowski hit the backstretch wall and came to a stop to bring the caution out with 14 laps complete.

Al Saunders took the lead back under green with Provost settling into second behind him. Paul Arute took third with Comeau fourth and Bloxsom just in front of David Arute for fifth. Hayes went by David Arute to move into sixth on lap-17. Bloxsom made a move to the inside of Comeau to move up to fourth on lap-18 just before the caution came out for a spin in the middle of turns 3+4 by David Tefft.

Al Saunders took the lead while Paul Arute pulled alongside Provost for second before he got loose in turn 4 and settled back into third. Saunders took the checkered flag with Provost, Hayes, Paul Arute, and Bloxsom rounding out the top-5.

In the 15-lap DARE Stock feature event, Brandon Michael took the early lead from the pole with Zack Robinson giving chase from second. Marcello Rufrano was third with Dan Dembek and Trace Beyer making up the top-5. With 5 laps to go, Michael was still in command of the race with Robinson right on his back bumper. Rufrano was still third with Beyer in fourth and Tyler Trott in fifth. Dembek had fallen back to sixth, just in front of Frank L’Etoile, Jr. in seventh. Michael led Robinson to the checkered flag to pick up his first win of the season. Rufrano finished third, with Beyer and Trott rounding out the top-5.

In the 20-lap Legend Cars feature, Noah Korner took the lead at the drop of the green flag and immediately began to open up a gap back to Michael Hopkins in second. Mikey Flynn was third, with Teddy Hodgdon and Brett Crowther making up the top-5. Devin O’Connell spun coming out of turn 4 to bring the caution out with 3 laps complete.

Korner took the lead back under green with Hodgdon staying tight on his bumper in second. The field completed 3 more laps before the caution came back out for a spin in turn 2 by Brett Crowther. Korner again took the lead with Hodgdon right on his back bumper. O’Connell was recovered from his earlier spin and was now third in line with Ryan DeCandia and Hopkins making up the top-5. Korner spun in turn 4 to bring the caution out with 10 laps complete after he and Hodgdon made contact. This put O’Connell into the race lead for the next restart with Hopkins to his outside.

O’Connell powered into the lead with Hopkins settling into second. Korner was on the move, quickly working his way back up to third with DeCandia in fourth and Crowther in fifth. O’Connell led the field back to the checkered flag to pick up his eighth win of the 2015 season. Korner finished second with Hopkins, DeCandia, and Hodgdon rounding out the top-5.
