Super32VLBy Lisa and Rich Maguire

The bright lights of Wiscasset Speedway illuminated the track at the first evening race of the season.   Despite the cool weather, fans lined the grandstands to watch group one division racing which included Super Streets, Thunder Four Mini’s,   ServePro of Biddeford Saco Prostocks, New England Four Cylinder Prostocks, and the flex race of the week, Wicked Good Vintage Racers.

The Spotlighted race of the evening was a twenty-five lap Super Street presentation.    Starting on the pole was the #27 of Barry Poulin.  To his right was the #38 of Cody Buzzell.  Starting in third was Bernie Dinsmore of the #3.  When green flag racing began, Tasha Dyer of the #32 advanced quickly from fifth, passing Dinsmore for third by lap two.  Ahead, Poulin was setting a fast pace for the pack, but Buzzell was tailing him looking for his chance to pass.  His chance came during lap fifteen when Poulin went high, opening the door for Buzzell.  During lap sixteen, Buzzell and Poulin raced head to head, until Buzzell accelerated and passed Poulin on the inside coming out of turn two for the lead.  Dyer, sticking close to Buzzell, also passed Poulin for second.

Dyer and Buzzell raced around the track, putting some distance between them and the rest of the pack.  Dyer was looking for an opening that Buzzell never gave her.  With time running out, and no other option, Dyer moved outside during lap twenty-four, looking for the lead.  Dyer quickly shot to the side of Buzzell, and the duo raced door to door.  Dyer dug deep and her car edged ahead by a nose, flying under the checkered .063 seconds ahead of Buzzell for the win.  Buzzell had to settle for second.  Poulin placed third.

Dyer said, “I won my first race of the season tonight.  I started in fifth, kept my tires under me, hit my marks, stayed calm and drove past the leader on the outside, coming to the checkered.  I led only one lap, and it was the one that counted.  I’m so grateful for everyone that puts so much effort on this thing.  I owe you!  Thank you to the fans who got autographs, pictures, and hugs.”

Two twenty lap flex races were next on the agenda.   The two features were raced by the Wicked Good Vintage Racers (WGVR).  The first WGVR feature was the Late Model Division.  The group payed tribute to the life of Steve Reny, a long time race car driver from Wiscasset Speedway who passed away in January.  Amy Reny, Steve Renys’ wife, was behind the wheel of the #7.  Steve Reny raced the #7 last year at Wiscasset Speedway, winning a race in August.  At the start of the race the pole position was left empty in honor of Reny.

When the cars shot over the start line, the #97 driven by Brian Hughes jumped to the lead.  The lead was short lived because the #420 of Keith Smalley passed Hughes for the lead during lap two.  The #2 of Kevin Waterhouse moved to second, and the #73 of Mark Theranault advanced to third.  By lap four, Theranault was in the lead, and stayed there to take the win.  Smalley dropped back.  The #82 of Bobbie Symonds advanced into the top three. Waterhouse and Symonds battled it out for second place, but ultimately Symonds gained the advantage and took second.  Waterhouse placed third.

The second WGVR race featured the Outlaw class.  The #86 of Ryan Chadwick started on the pole.  To his right was the #79 of Scott Tucker.  Behind was Bob Guyon of the #1.  The action was quick on the track when racing began.  All eyes were on the #? of James Osmond.  Osmond rapidly moved from the back of the pack to the lead by lap five.  The #55 of Gary Dwinal followed Osmond to take second.  Chadwick moved to third.  Race leaders remained constant until the final lap, when Dwinal spun coming out of turn four, just before the finish line.  Chadwick advanced to second and Guyon to third.  Osmond took the win.  Chadwick placed second.  Guyon took third.

Wiscasset’s entry level class was next on the track.  The Thunder Four Mini’s competed in a twenty lap race that quickly sped by.  It was a mad dash for the lead at race start, but by the conclusion of lap one, the top three had secured their winning spots, and they stayed there.  The #19 of Travis Poulliot was in the lead, and cruised to first place. Michael Harrison of the #48 took second.  The #3 of Jeff Minchin Jr came in third, holding off the #4J of Joe Katula.  However, Minchin failed post-race inspection and third was later awarded to Katula.

The ServePro of Biddeford Saco Prostock race was exciting from the start.  Fifteen cars competed in a forty lap feature event.  Starting at the pole was the #99 of Ajay Picard.  In second was Chuck Colby of the #72.  Starting in third was the #91JR of Mike Orr.  There were two cautions during the race, and they both happened in the first lap.  On the restart, Colby shot to the forefront, but Picard quickly snatched the lead back.  The #09 of Jeremy Davis passed Orr for third.

Davis was not content with third and passed Colby during lap two for second.  Davis then drove up to the rear of Picard and chased him around the track.  During lap six, Davis bumped Picard and slid underneath for a pass, taking the lead. Lap ten saw another change in the top three when the #13 of Nate Tribbett passed Colby for third.  Ahead, Davis had gained a commanding lead, running away with the win.  Picard was in second.  It looked like Tribbett had third place in hand when suddenly, during lap thirty-seven, his car experienced mechanical issues and he headed to the pits.  The #15 of Nick Hinkley advanced to third.  Davis took the win.  Picard placed second.  Hinkley rounded out the top three in third.

Wrapping up the show was a twenty-five lap New England Four Cylinder Prostock race.  The race was a jumble from the start.  There were numerous cautions, and the race ended under a yellow and checkered flag.  Starting at the pole was Brooke Knowles of the #9X.  Brooke Knowles was able to lead the first five caution-filled laps, but dropped to third when she was passed by both the #48 of RJ Pinkham and the #24 of Jeff Prindall.  During lap eight, Prindall spun on the back stretch, bringing out a caution.  Prindall was sent to the back.  Moving up to fill the void was the #38 of Ryan Hayes.  By lap twelve, Hayes was in second.

Pinkham and Hayes then battled for the lead until lap nineteen.  On lap nineteen the duo spun on turn three, and most of the field was gathered up in the ensuing chaos.  When the dust cleared, the #98 of Kamren Knowles was in the lead. Prindall, having moved up from the back, was once again in second.  The #4 of Lexi Roach was in third.  Roach spun on the restart, bringing out another caution.  Hayes advanced to third.  The race leaders remained constant until the end, when the race was called finished at lap twenty-two.  Kamren Knowles took the win.  Prindall placed second.  Hayes took third.
