Dragon Grabs Governor’s Cup, Badore Claims Fairpoint Communications Night Feature

Barre, VT – Scott Dragon of Milton literally caught Nick Sweet of Barre at the finish line to capture the makeup of the rained-out Governor’s Cup, and Eric Badore of Milton took advantage of rookie Marcel Gravel’s late-race misfortune to earn the Thunder Road Late Model feature on Fairpoint Communications Night.

 

Sweet dominated for most of the Governor’s Cup, running away from the 29-car field from the pole position at the green flag to take the lead, which he held for the first 136 laps of the 150-lap event. Dragon got better as the race went on, moving into the top 3 on lap 115, then claiming second place on the 128th lap, then moving in front on a lap 141 restart.

 

Sweet went back in front three laps after that restart following the fourth caution of the race. Dragon continued the chase, caught Sweet coming out of turn 4 on the final lap, then finished 1/100th of a second in front of Sweet as the two drivers made contact at the finish line.

Jason Corliss of Barre, Tyler Cahoon of Danville, Matt White of Northfield, Cody Blake of Barre,  Mike Bailey of South Barre, Brooks Clark of Fayston, Josh Masterson of Charlotte, and Trampas Demers of S. Burlington rounded out the Governor’s Cup top 10.

 

In the 50-lap Fairpoint Communications Night 50-lap feature for the Thunder Road Late Models, rookie Marcel Gravel appeared on be on his way to the first feature victory of his career until disaster struck on the only caution of the event on lap 48. Gravel wasn’t involved in the original accident, but drove into the wall in the middle of fourth turn avoiding the accident. His car was too damaged to continue.

 

Tyler Cahoon of Danville inherited the lead on the ensuing restart, but was passed by Badore on the last lap. Dragon also passed Cahoon on the final lap to claim second. Cahoon held on for third, and was followed across the finish line by Phil Scott of Middlesex,  Demers, Nick Sweet, Kyle Pembroke of Montpelier, Corliss, Clark, and White.

 

Stephen Donahue of Graniteville, prevailed in a three-way tiebreaker to claim the Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen Twin-25s. Donahue, Brendan Moodie of Wolcott, and Mike Martin of Craftsbury Common, all finished with seven combined points after two segments, but Donhaue claimed the overall win by virture of his better finish (third place) in the second segment. Moodie ended up second, Martin third, Mark Barnier of Essex Jct. fourth, and Cameron Ouellette of Barre fifth. Martin won the first segment, while Eric Johnson of Randolph Ctr. won the second 25-lap Tiger event.

 

In the Allen Lumber Street Stocks, Garry Bashaw of Lincoln took his second victory of the season in the 25-lap main event. Rounding out the top 10 were Peyton Lanphear of Duxbury, Tyler Austin of E. Calais, Thomas Merchant of Eden Mills, Gary Mullen of Tunbridge, Jaden Perry of Hardwick, Michael Gay of So. Burlington, Matthew Smith of Essex Jct., Greg Collette of Milton, and Reilly Lanphear of Duxbury.

 

Racing action returns to Thunder Road on Thursday, July 28 for the Times Argus Mid-Season Championship. The event features a full card of action for the Thunder Road Late Models, Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen, and Allen Lumber Street Stocks. Post time is 7:00 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults, $3 for kids ages 6-12, and $25 for a family of four (2 adults, 2 kids).
