(Stafford Springs, CT)—With 2010 Race of Champions Dart Dirt Modified
Series champion and 2010 Syracuse 200 winner Stewart Friesen unable to
attend CARQUEST Champions For Charities due to a scheduling conflict, 2-time
NEMA Midget champion Randy Cabral has stepped in to take his place. Cabral
won the NEMA Midget championship in 2008 and 2009 and he is also the
defending CARQUEST Extreme Tuesday NEMA Midget race champion at Stafford.
While Cabral has plenty of Midget car experience, he admits that he is a bit
lacking in experience when it comes to the Senior Outlaw Kart that he will
be driving in the Inaugural CARQUEST Champions For Charities event.
“I have very limited experience in a go kart,” said Cabral. “I’ve played
around a few times in a kart on a road course, but I think the guys I’ll be
racing against have a lot more kart experience than me. I’m hoping that I’
ll be able to pick it up pretty quickly, it’s a stacked field that I’ll be
racing against, that’s for sure. I have a couple of crew guys that race
karts, so hopefully they can give me a couple of pointers.”
Cabral will be racing to represent The Spalding Foundation, which provides
monetary support for drivers, crewmen, and racing officials who have
sustained injuries in a race related accident at a NASCAR, dirt or local
licensed track in New York State and around the United States. Since its
formation in 1989, the Spalding Foundation has donated over $100,000 to more
than 130 individuals and families.
The starting field for the CARQUEST Champions For Charities event will be
set by how much money each driver raises for their selected charity and
Cabral is already working on increasing his total for a better starting
spot.
“We’re already working on donations, so hopefully we can have some folks
come through for us and we can move up the starting grid for the race,” said
Cabral.
In addition to the CARQUEST Champions for Charities event, Cabral will be
racing the #47 Bertrand Motorsports entry in the NEMA Midget feature.
Cabral won the CARQUEST Extreme Tuesday NEMA event last season and he is
looking forward to making another trip into CARQUEST Victory Lane this year.
“The season hasn’t been too bad for us so far, but it could be better,” said
Cabral. “We’ve only ran 2 races so far and we had a pretty wild ride our
last race out. There was a red flag and we had a short on a battery wire
and the car caught fire. I was able to get pushed to the pits where the
crew worked on the car and got me back out on track and we came back up
through the field to finish 6th. I have a great crew behind me, if there’s
a way to get into victory lane, they’ll find it for me. We always seem to
run well when we come to Stafford and we finally won at Stafford last year.
Hopefully we can back last year’s win up with another win this year and put
on a good show for the fans.”
CARQUEST Extreme Tuesday will take place on June 28, 2011 and will also
feature the ISMA Super Modifieds, NEMA Midgets, and Pro-4 Modifieds as well
as the Senior Outlaw Karts. Tickets for CARQUEST Extreme Tuesday are on
sale now at the Speedway Box Office and are priced at $30.00 for adult
general admission tickets, $5.00 for children ages 6-14, and children ages 5
and under are admitted free of charge when accompanied by an adult.
Reserved seating is priced at $32.00 for all ages. As always, Stafford Motor
Speedway offers free parking with overnight parking available.
