Dragon Wins Vermont 100 in Dramatic Fashion

West Haven, VT – Milton, VT’s Brent Dragon proved himself as one of the greats in the most dramatic race of the year at the Vermont State Championship Series finale at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Sunday, September 16. Chip Grenier finished a heart-breaking second, and the Mad River Valley’s Brooks Clark stole third in the closing laps.

Grenier shot to the lead in the early going, working around pole sitter Clark to gain the lead on the third lap of the event, but third-place point man Dragon stole it away from him on the eleventh circuit. Dragon’s lead was short lived when 7-time American Canadian Tour Champion Jean Paul Cyr worked to the front, where the pair survived 7 of the first 9 cautions on the front row together. While Dragon fought for the lead, tied point leaders Sweet and Pembroke struggled.

SPEEDWAY 95 LATE MODEL WIN IN DOUBT

Speedway 95 results September 15

2010 Speedway 95 Little Enduro champion Danny Blanchard of Bangor appeared to have won his career first Dysart’s Late Model feature Saturday night at Speedway 95, but a post race inspection found that his crate motor did not still contain the required seal indicating that it had not been worked on since being sealed by Butler and MacMaster Automotive of Hallowell, the official engine shop of Speedway 95. Management has agreed to hold the finish of the race in suspense until the motor, which has been removed from the car, is taken to Butler and MacMaster on Monday to be tested. If it passes the test, Blanchard will be allowed to keep the win. Blanchard had led from the pole to lap 33 when a yellow flag bunched the 17 car field up for a two lap dash to the finish. Duane Seekins of Stockton Springs, who had run second for most of the race, challenged Blanchard over the last two laps, but was unable to unseat Blanchard from the top spot and finished second. In his post race interview, Seekins complained that Ryan Deane, the third place finisher, pushed him sideways on those last two laps, causing his car to lose traction and making it impossible for him to beat Blanchard. Points leader Andy Saunders of Ellsworth finished in fourth with John Kalel II of Orrington finishing fifth. All positions are unofficial until the Blanchard motor test is completed on Monday.

The Vermont 200 stock car racing weekend began at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in exciting fashion on Saturday, September 15. The victory for Haskins’ No. 95 Fuller Sand & Gravel/TPW Management entry came in a special 10-lap Shootout for drivers who had not previously won a Bond Auto Parts Modified feature race in 2012. He defeated Cody Sargen, Jason Bruno, Mike Bush, and Andy Smith for the win.

First-round qualifying was held for the Modifieds as well, locking in the top-12 starters for Sunday’s 100-lap main event. Vince Quenneville, Jr., of Brandon, VT won the first 10-lap heat race, while Roger Labreche of St-Remis, QC won his heat in his first-ever appearance at Devil’s Bowl. Traffic was not the major factor it had been over the past couple of weeks in the Pure Stock feature, but for the third week in a row, the race went green to checker with a late pass for the win. This time it was John Robidoux of Swansea moving past Ian Savard of North Attleboro as the pair came across the stripe under the white flag.

Savard jumped out front on the opening lap and was able to pull away from the field with ease. Tim Demarderosian sat second for the first few laps until Amy Arsenault moved into the runner up spot. She held on for second for much of the race, keeping Jamie Salley and Randy Moretti at bay. As the laps wound down, Robidoux was running the outside and it took over a dozen laps to work past the pack of cars at the front with points leader Jesse Melberg on his tail.

Once clear of the traffic, John and Jesse, who continued to run bumper to bumper, ran down Savard, who was starting to fight the handles on his car. As the pair came under the white flag, Robidoux got under Savard and took the lead going into turn one. Melberg followed him right through and finished second, clinching his first Pure Stock Championship. Savard held on to third at the finish, with Arsenault and Salley rounding out the top five.
