Breaks own track mark in qualifying for NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour opener

THOMPSON, Conn. (April 9, 2011) — Defending champion Bobby Santos shows no sign of slowing down. In fact, the Franklin, Mass., driver is getting faster.

Santos broke his own track record in qualifying Saturday for Sunday’s Icebreaker, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour opener at Thompson International Speedway. Santos posted a lap of 18.237 seconds (123.376 mph) around the .625-mile oval for his fifth career Coors Light Pole Award.

Santos also posted the fastest lap in Saturday morning’s practice for the Icebreaker. He is the defending race winner, too.

record for most career starts with 33, and A.J. Foyt holds the Indy 500
record for most career starts with 35. Jamie Tomiano, who has raced in 27
of the previous 39 Sizzlers, currently holds the CARQUEST Tech-Net Spring
Sizzler record for most career starts and he will add to that total in this
year’s 40th Annual CARQUEST Tech-Net Spring Sizzler. Tomaino’s familiar #99
Supreme Manufacturing Chevrolet will take the green flag for the 28th time
in this year’s edition of “The Greatest Race in the History of Spring”.
Tomaino made his first career Spring Sizzler start in 1980 and he has been
in the Sizzler starting field every year since 1989, a span of 22

When the 2011 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season takes the green flag at Thompson (Conn.) International Speedway on April 10, longtime car owner Bob Garbarino will be in a position with which he has become familiar in recent seasons: defending champion. This difference this spring, however, will be that he has his champion driver back behind the wheel for an encore performance.

ICEBREAKER 2011 THIS WEEKEND AT THOMPSON

Thompson, CT. The much anticipated opening of the 2011 racing season at Thompson International Speedway is set for this weekend. The seven-division, two-day Icebreaker is a New England tradition and marks the beginning of another exciting racing season at the historic speedway.

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour tops the bill on Icebreaker weekend. Defending Champion, Bobby Santos III will lead a star studded field of NASCAR Modified drivers when they line up for their 150-lap season opener at Thompson.

COATES WINS NETS BLASTOFF WEEKEND RACE

Lowell MA.- Corey Coates # 75 from Ledyard CT, dominated the 25-lap main event as part of the Waterford Speedbowl’s season-opening Budweiser Blastoff event. The win was the rookie driver’s first in the New England Truck Series.

Keith Chapman #22 from Mystic CT and Derek Chriss #12 from Averill NY, led the ten truck field to post. Chriss got the advantage on the start, pacing the field for the first six circuits. Bert Ouellette #15 truck from Dayville CT, retired from the race on lap four with a blown rear end. On the seventh-go-around, Coates was able to motor his way around Chriss, having advanced from his fifth starting position. As Coates became the new race leader, Jason Lafayette #21X from Somers CT, went pit side with a engine problem.
