ICEBREAKER TO FEATURE “BEST OF THE REST” RACE

THOMPSON, CT. Thompson’s Icebreaker weekend will offer two special race events on Saturday evening, April 13th.  The events will be called “Best of the Rest” events and will be held for the Xtra Mart Limited Sportsman and the Monster Mini Stocks.

The fields in these races will be made up of drivers who raced at Thompson in 2012 but did not finish in the top ten in points at year’s end. Anyone in either division who did finish in the top ten in points will not be eligible to participate in these “Best of the Rest” races.

Fast track Concessions will provide the sponsorship for the Monster Mini Stock 15-lap race and New England Race Fuels will provide the sponsorship for the Xtra Mart Limited Sportsman 20-lap main. These two non-points events will be in addition to the regular Icebreaker races for these two divisions that will be run on Sunday, April 14th.

THOMPSON TO OPEN FOR PRACTICE PRIOR TO 2013 ICEBREAKER

ThompsonTHOMPSON, CT. The first of two open practice dates at the Thompson International Speedway is slated for Saturday, March 30th with a second scheduled for Saturday, April 6th. The practice sessions will be open to any safe race car and run from 11 am until 5 pm on both days.

In spite of Mother Nature’s desire to extend the long New England winter, track officials are working extra hard to have the speedway in race condition when the paddock area gates open 9 am. All vehicles will be inspected and then allowed onto the track for a full day of practice. The practice sessions will, as always, be conducted in a “round robin” format by division. The on-track activity will be virtually non-stop during each of the practice days.

Race teams look forward to these open practice days so that they can test their race cars prior to the Icebreaker, the most anticipated race event of the year. The Thompson Icebreaker will be run on the weekend of April 13th and 14th and will feature the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, The Granite State Pro Stocks and Thompson’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Sunoco Modifieds, LKQ/Keystone Lite Modifieds, Late Models, Xtra Mart Limited Sportsman and Monster Mini Stocks. NEW ENGLAND MOTORSPORTS SOUTH for March 16 – 18 2013

By Lou Modestino

The roar of the engines will once again fill the air at the Thompson International Speedway when the track opens for the first of two pre-season practice sessions on Saturday, March 30th. Each year, the first open practice session is very important to competitors and this year it will be of particular importance to the drivers of the former Thompson Modified division.

Nearly every TIS Modified team has moved to a new division at the track and each will be faced with challenges as they adapt to new cars and drivers in a completely different class of race cars. The Thompson Late Model class has become the division of choice for the majority of the TIS Modified Drivers.

The 2012 Thompson Modified champion, John-Lowinski-Loh, JR is just one of the drivers moving to the Late Models. He recently said that he was really looking forward to competing in a Late Model but he said that he and his team had their work cut out for them. He spoke of the fact that the cars are bigger and that there will be a need to adjust to a different suspension system, different tires and to learn to work with less visibility in the full-body style car. Lowinski-Loh, Jr said, “We will be racing with much more experienced guys but I think there will be close competition. I also think there will be a nice field of cars and that will make for really good racing. We are also looking forward to traveling to other tracks and getting valuable seat time. We are even thinking about going to Loudon,” he concluded. Lowinski-Loh, JR. had a very successful 2012 season. He scored eighteen top five finishes and visited victory lane a total of nine times.
