Wiscasset2013logoBy Lisa Maguire

Last Saturday was a great day for racing at the Wiscasset Speedway. The day was warm and sunny, and the grandstands were filled with people ready to watch some racing action. On the schedule was the group two lineup of divisions: Strictly Street, Mini Truck, Outlaw Mini’s, and Late Model Sportsman.

First on the track were the Strictly Street’s for a twenty lap race. The No. 39 of Gerard Freve was in the pole position. Behind him were Guy Childs in the No. 5 and Ben Erskine of the No. 43. During the first lap around the track, Childs passed Freve on the outside of turn three for the lead. Moving up quickly from a sixth place starting position was the No. 32 of Tasha Dyer. Dyer had navigated her Morse and Doak Builders Chevy through the pack, and during lap two passed Freve for second. Coming up behind Freve and Dyer was the No. 26 driven by Corey Morgan. Morgan passed Freve for third on the outside of the front stretch coming out of turn four during lap two.

Saturday’s NASCAR Nite Pro Series 50-lap feature event was won by Newcastle’s Charlie Colby. Colby has become the only driver to land three wins in the top-level division this season.

At the drop of the green, Durham’s Evan Beaulieu, paced the 24-car field to the green flag and lead the first lap, however was overtaken by Mike Maietta, Jr, of South Portland, the following lap. Maietta led until a caution on lap three which bunched the field back together. On the restart, Maietta maintained his lead over Beaulieu and led until lap nine, when the second caution of the event flew.

Bill Rodgers, of Old Orchard Beach, safely maneuvered his way to the runner-up spot by the caution after starting in his 6th starting spot. Maietta battled side-by-side with Rodgers on the restart for the top position, but was passed by Rodgers when he was able to gain momentum going into the fourth corner.

Speedway 95SHELBY KIMBALL, JORDAN PEARSON SHARE SPEEDWAY 95 SPOTLIGHT

Jordan Pearson of Glenburn and Shelby Kimball of Cornville finished one-two in the Keystone Automotive Strictly Street Pepsi Beverage Company series race at Speedway 95 Saturday night, giving Pearson his first win of the season and Kimball the three race series win. Pearson took the lead on lap 18 of the 35 lap feature when leader Dave Gray of Dixmont broke his transmission and headed for the pit. Kimball, who was running second, slowed for just a heartbeat behind Gray and Pearson, who was right behind Kimball, drove past her and into the lead. Kimball recovered to finish second, ahead of her brother Matt Kimball, also of Cornville, who finished third. Jim Bragdon of Corinth was fourth in the feature with Keith Ogden of Holden finishing fifth. In the three race Pepsi Beverage Company series, Kimball took the overall win with her brother Matt finishing in second. Alex Berry of Harrington finished third in the series despite finishing the night’s feature in seventh.

Ryan Deane of Winterport rolled to his fifth win of the season in the Dysart’s Late Models after passing early leader Andrew McLaughlin of Harrington on the 6th lap. A solo spin by Carmel’s Ryan Clark brought out the race’s only caution on lap 10, and Deane was able to hold his lead from the restart to the finish. Andy Saunders of Ellsworth came from near the rear of the 15 car field to finish in the second spot, with Orrington’s John Kalel II passing Duane Seekins of Stockton Springs on lap 20 of the 40 lap race to take the third spot. Seekins finished fourth with Ryan Modery of Hermon finishing fifth in a car loaned to him by Hermon’s Mike Hopkins, a part-time racer at the speedway.
