SPEEDWAY 95 CLOSES 2012 SEASON WITH DOUBLE HEADER ACTION
MIKE HOPKINS AND RYAN DEANE TAKE LATE MODEL WINS
Speedway 95 closed out a very successful 2012 season with a double header week-end full of racing action that looked like the season was just beginning. On Saturday, over 75 cars entered the pit area under cloudy and breezy skies in a day that was to feature extended races in the speedway’s Strictly street and Sport-Four divisions. In Sunday’s action, the Dysart’s Late Models and the Maine State Lottery Sportsman did their season ending extended length features.

Speedway 95 results September 15
2010 Speedway 95 Little Enduro champion Danny Blanchard of Bangor appeared to have won his career first Dysart’s Late Model feature Saturday night at Speedway 95, but a post race inspection found that his crate motor did not still contain the required seal indicating that it had not been worked on since being sealed by Butler and MacMaster Automotive of Hallowell, the official engine shop of Speedway 95. Management has agreed to hold the finish of the race in suspense until the motor, which has been removed from the car, is taken to Butler and MacMaster on Monday to be tested. If it passes the test, Blanchard will be allowed to keep the win. Blanchard had led from the pole to lap 33 when a yellow flag bunched the 17 car field up for a two lap dash to the finish. Duane Seekins of Stockton Springs, who had run second for most of the race, challenged Blanchard over the last two laps, but was unable to unseat Blanchard from the top spot and finished second. In his post race interview, Seekins complained that Ryan Deane, the third place finisher, pushed him sideways on those last two laps, causing his car to lose traction and making it impossible for him to beat Blanchard. Points leader Andy Saunders of Ellsworth finished in fourth with John Kalel II of Orrington finishing fifth. All positions are unofficial until the Blanchard motor test is completed on Monday.

Winterport’s Ryan Deane won his first Dysart’s Late Model feature of the season Saturday night at Speedway 95 when a rain shower caused the race to be stopped after 32 of the 35 scheduled laps had been completed. Points leader Andy Saunders of Ellsworth led the first 19 laps until Deane passed him for the lead, which he held until the caution for the rain halted the race. Wayne Parritt of Steuben also got by Saunders on lap 31, giving him the second spot at the finish. Saunders finished third with rookie Ryan Modery of Hermon placing fourth. Duane Seekins of Stockton Springs came from the rear of the field at the start to finish fifth.
Jim Carr Jr. of Clifton led all 25 laps of the Strictly Street feature that was stopped on lap 20 for a car stalled on the back stretch. On the restart, Andrew McLaughlin of Harrington challenged Carr for the top spot, but was unable to make the pass and settled for a second place finish. Shelby Kimball of Cornville finished third, with David Gray of Dixmont and Mac Hannon of Union rounding out the top five.

Mike Hopkins stared 8th in the 18 car starting field of the Dysart’s Late Model 75 lap Team Morgan Racing shootout at Speedway 95 Saturday night and ended up the winner by taking advantage of a late race caution. On the 68th lap, the yellow flew ending Andy Saunders 49 lap run at the front of the field. After Hopkins took the lead when the green dropped for the final 7 laps of the event, Saunders found himself in a battle for second with Winterport’s Ryan Deane who had led for 18 laps earlier in the race and had worked his way up from the rear of the field following an altercation with Hermon’s Phil Richardson earlier in the night. Deane also had an encounter with Richardson later in the race in an incident that saw Richardson black flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. Saunders managed to hold Deane off to finish second with Deane ending up third at the finish. Dean Smart of Bradley came in fourth with Josh St. Clair of Liberty finishing fifth. Donny Blanchard of Bangor, the only other driver to lead one lap of the event, finished in sixth. Hopkins said at the end that he never would have been able to catch and pass Saunders if the restart had not given him the opportunity to catch Saunders and race him for the win.

Although he’s been atop the Dysart’s Late Model points chart for most of the 2012 season, it took Andy Saunders of Ellsworth until this past Saturday night to finally post a feature race win in the track’s premier division. Saunders started the race in the fifth spot in the 17 car field, and it took him until a restart on lap 26 before he could pass Milford’s Deane Smart to take the lead. Smart had led the event for most of the first 26 laps, losing it for only a lap at a time through close competition from Duane Seekins of Stockton Springs and Hermon’s Phil Richardson, who took turns challenging Smart for the top spot. Smart fought them both off, but didn’t have enough left at the end to keep Saunders from taking the win. Smart finished second with Seekins in third. Fourth went to Joey Doyon of Winterport with Hermon’s Dale Swoboda finishing fifth.

Garett Hayman of Milford led all 25 laps of the Little Enduro Series race #3 on Varney Buick-GMC-Mazda’s Wacky Wednesday night at Speedway and, in the process, picked up the series points title with a perfect score of 300. Hayman won the evening’s first qualifier, which placed him on the pole for the main event. He led outside pole-sitter Jeremy Scott of Carmel, who won the second qualifier, for 23 laps until the red came out for a solo spin by Glenburn’s Emma Libby in turn 2. On the restart, Hayman again pulled away from Scott, but Newburgh’s Darren Durrell got in the gas hard and followed Hayman past Scott to finish second, with Scott finishing in third. Kyle Gallant, who battled with Durrell for most of the race finished in fourth with Donny Silva of Hudson finishing fifth in a borrowed car. Hayman also currently leads the Little Enduro season points with 2 race dates remaining in the season.
