MIKE HOPKINS TAKES SPEEDWAY 95 LATE MODEL WIN

Speedway 95Hermon’s Mike Hopkins came out on the winning end of a controversial 40 lap Dysart’s Late Model feature at Speedway 95 Saturday night. Hopkins started the event in the 14th position and took the lead from Ryan Deane following a lap 25 restart and held the lead through two more restarts to take the win. On lap 25, leaders Andy Saunders of Ellsworth and Wayne Parritt Jr. of Steuben were sent to the rear of the field following a spin by Saunders apparently caused when Ryan Deane of Winterport tried to make it three wide in turn one, making Parritt and Saunders stay high on the track, which led to Saunders spinning out in the “marbles” high in turn one. Both flagmen felt Parritt, who was in the middle of the three wide formation touched Saunders, helping him spin, so both drivers were sent to the rear of the field. Deane and Hopkins, who were running third and fourth when the spin occurred, inherited the front row. Hopkins got by Deane on lap 29 following a four lap side by side battle, and stayed there until the yellow flag flew again on lap 35, when someone in the pits rolled a trash barrell onto the track, causing a caution to be thrown. Hopkins survived the restart and went on to win the race with Deane finishing in second. Andrew McLaughlin of Harrington finished third, followed by Milford’s Deane Smart in fourth and Milo’s Nick Jenkins in fifth.

Speedway 95SAUNDERS AND DEANE TAKE SPEEDWAY 95 LATE MODEL WINS

Two of the top winning drivers in the Dysart’s Late Models at Speedway 95 this season each added to their total Saturday night by picking up a win in a night that saw double features in the division. In the race held over from last week’s mid program rain out, points leader Andy Saunders of Ellsworth came from the 10th starting position to take the lead from Brenton Parritt of Steuben on lap 29, then raced Parritt side by side over the final two laps following a late race caution to cement the win. Parritt finished in second, followed by Bradley’s Dean Smart in third. Fourth finishing position went to Orrington’s John Kalel II with Ryan Deane of Winterport finishing in fifth. In the regularly scheduled 40 lap Dysart’s Late Model feature, Ryan Deane of Winterport wrestled the lead away from Duane Seekins of Stockton Springs at the half way point of the event and went on the post his sixth win of the season. John Kalel II of Orrington was the first to break from the pack behind the leaders and got by Seekins in the closing laps of the event to finish second, with Seekins coming home third. RAINS AGAIN CURTAIL SPEEDWAY 95 PROGRAM for September 7

For the second week in a row, rain forced Speedway 95 officials to cut the program short before all scheduled racing was completed for the night. John Kalel II of Orrington won the Dysart’s Late Model feature postponed from last week by about a foot over defending champion Andy Saunders of Ellsworth. Kalel led every lap of the event from the pole to the checkers, but Saunders made a steady run from his mid pack starting spot, putting his car in the second spot on lap 22 of the 40 lap event after a lengthy battle for the position with Duane Seekins of Stockton Springs. After finally passing Seekins, Saunders steadily gained ground on Kalel, catching him as the two to go sign was shown by the flagman, Saunders was beside Kalel when the white flag flew, but Kalel hung on to his lead and beat Saunders to the checkers by a nose. Saunders finished second with Seekins finishing third. Rookie Andrew McLaughlin of Harrington took the fourth spot with Steuben’s Brenton Parritt finishing fifth.

RAIN INTERRUPTS SPEEDWAY 95 PROGRAM

Speedway 95Rain caused postponement of the 40 lap Dysart’s Late Model feature at Speedway 95 on Saturday night and shortened the 25 lap Sport-Four feature to 21 laps. At the end of the 21st lap, Donny Silva of Hudson was in the lead, and was declared the winner when the event was stopped due to rain. Just prior to the last lap run under green, the race was halted three times before lap 20 could be completed. Ted Ryder of Carmel was in the lead when the first yellow flag was thrown on lap 20, with Silva having come from the rear of the field to the second spot by lap 10. Ryder’s lead was substantial at the time, but Silva was slowly catching the season’s points leader. When the first yellow fell, Silva lined up beside Ryder for the restart. When the green fell, the duo raced side by side until the yellow fell for the second time. Again they lined up side by side for the restart, and stayed that way when the green fell again. As they approached the start finish line side by side for the third time on lap 20, the yellow flew again. On the restart, Silva was able to forge ahead of Ryder and hold the lead until the caution came out for rain on lap 21. After circling the track for about ten minutes, the race was called official, the remainder of the program scrubbed, and Silva was declared the winner. Ryder finished second with pole sitter Andrew Crosby finishing third. Fourth went to James Goodman of Orrington with Brock Worster of Kingfield finishing fifth.
