Will NASCAR and the other sanctions ever get back the fans they once had?
Knowledgeable sources in the motor racing community here in the USA and elsewhere think that motorsports has seen its best days behind it. It appears that racing, NASCAR in particular, which set the best trend in both TV ratings and paid attendance, may never fully recover what they had prior to the economic downturn of 2008. Flying high in 2008, NASCAR TV ratings and attendance were still “hot”.
But shortly after that, the fall off started. In fact, there were already indications of an erosion beginning even prior to that, if one was able to see the signs. Ticket sales began to tank, and at the same time, TV ratings indicated a major displeasure by hard core NASCAR fans. And fickle fans left for brighter pastures. (more…)

NBC Sports wants NASCAR TV rights
The Motor Racing Network (MRN) recently revealed that the NBC Sports Channel, formerly known as Versus, is looking for a piece of NASCAR action to possibly knock out ESPN/ABC for the last third of the NASCAR Sprint Cup races. NBC Sports is also currently out shopping for top TV sports programs beyond the NASCAR Sprint Cup as well.
That last third of the NASCAR Sprint Cup is currently aired by ESPN and ABC with those rights expiring in 2014. However, NBC Sports could knock TNT out of the NASCAR box instead of ESPN/ABC only because it would be a lot easier for them to get a foothold in NASCAR now during the middle of the NASCAR season. Consider the fact that ESPN and ABC have a lot of depth and opportunities that NASCAR benefits from now with all of their extensive sports programming on the ESPN channels. (more…)
