American Canadian Tour (ACT) teams look at Lee USA Speedway’s annual New Hampshire Governor’s Cup 150 to kickstart their race season on Sunday, April 13, 2014. The optimism is well-founded. ACT Late Models can boast 10 different winners in 11 events held at Lee since 2003.
The list of winners is impressive, with a huge diversity of experience. Starting the list of winners are two Canadian teams, featuring four-time ACT US and Canadian Champion Patrick Laperle from St. Denis, QC and NASCAR Canadian Champion DJ Kennington, St. Thomas, ON in 2003 and 2004, respectively.
Seven-time ACT Champion Jean-Paul Cyr, and three time Thunder Road Champion Cris Michaud, along with the 1995 ACT Pro Stock Champion from Fast One racing, Brad Leighton all went to victory lane at Lee USA Speedway. Pro All Star Series Champion Ben Rowe from Turner, Maine won the NH Governor’s Cup in 2008. Lee regular weekly racer Miles Chipman shocked the ACT regulars in 2010 with a win for long-time car owner David Storey.
Perennial front-runner Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. from Hudson, NH was a first-time winner in 2008. “I remember what a great feeling it was to win that race. I started my ACT career at Lee and to get that win really gave my career a boost. I think Brian (eight (8) time ACT Champion Brian Hoar from Williston, VT) is the only guy who has won the Lee opener twice, and that is definitely my goal this year. If we can start the season like we ended 2013, this could help us get that first ACT Championship this season. I can’t wait for the season to begin,” said Pole.
The defending New Hampshire Governor’s Cup winner, Jimmy Hebert, from Williamstown, VT stunned the veterans and the full house a year ago, with his first ever ACT win in just his second year of competition. “It was with a lot of help from my team and Dale Shaw that got me that win, but really with the number of cars and quality of race teams we raced with, it was pretty much a shock to me. I only remember coming around with the checkered flag victory lap and seeing my father jumping up and down on the track. That was pretty special. I hope to repeat this year,” said Hebert.
The ACT opening event at Lee USA Speedway in Lee, NH will take place with a full practice on Saturday, April 12 and a 150-lap feature event on Sunday, April 13, 2014. Qualifying will begin at 1:00 on Sunday.
Mother Nature continues to hound us as we have by-passed the middle of March. The old saying “March goes in like a lion, and out like a lamb” is certainly true as we passed the mid-point of the month and still no definitive sign of spring in the air. We are still hoping for the April 12thPASS opener to stay on schedule, so keep your fingers and toes tightly crossed.
There is an explosion of growth in the Budweiser Pro Late Model division that races in our weekly Oxford Championship Series every Friday night here at OPS. This Pro Late Model class features cars that are very similar in rules with the PASS Super Late Models. The Pro Late Models took the place of regular Late Models in 2013. Numbers last year ran between twelve and eighteen cars per week. With opening day scheduled for Friday, May 2nd, thirty-one cars have already filed entry for the 2014 season, and there are several drivers that we are aware of that have yet to send in their paperwork. The announcement of $1,500 to win, and $300 to finish tenth that was made a while back, has drawn interest from a lot of race teams that had been stagnant for a while.

The season is set to get underway on Saturday, April 12th at 2 p.m. Clark used consistency to capture the title in 2013, and he now knows the secret formula to become a back to back champion is taking what the race will give you. The Hight Chevrolet team is well prepared to defend their title.

Daniel Hemric from Kannapolis, North Carolina has started off the 2014 PASS South Super Late Model season with a pair of victories at Greenville-Pickens Speedway and at Dillon Motor Speedway, has thrown his hat into the Oxford 250 battle ring. Winning back to back races is not easy to do in any Series, but to do it in the highly competitive PASS South Series is quite an accomplishment in itself. Hemric will be leading a strong contingent of Southern drivers to Oxford Plains Speedway.

A large quantity of contingency awards awaits the drivers of the Granite State Pro Stock Series (GSPSS) for the 2014 season.
Many different companies have stepped up and offered some great prizes and products this upcoming season. Not only do heat winners and the series champion receive contingency awards, there are also bonuses spread out through the entire field and random prize winners at the year-end banquet.
Sunoco Race Fuels will present the winner of any qualifying round, including heats and consolation rounds, with 5 gallons of race fuel. MacLellan Metal Finishing of Waltham, MA will also give all heat race winners a $25 check. This equates to approximately $85 added to the heat race winner’s check.
Not only will race winners reap rewards, but there are a few different companies supporting different finishing positions throughout the field. RB Performance, based out of Andover, ME, will be presenting a $50 gift certificate to the 4th and 7th place finisher in each feature event. Sherwood Racing Wheels from Owego, NY has agreed to present the 10th place finisher in each feature event with a $50 gift certificate. Bond Auto Parts will be awarding a $200 bonus to the last car on the lead lap at each event. Also, Five Star Stock Car Bodies will be handing out a $50 gift certificate with their 5th Place Finisher award. GSPSS driver Cory Casagrande is pleased with the distribution of awards. “For me, I’m mostly a weekly racer,” states Casagrande. “We do not get anything for heat races, nor do we usually receive any bonus besides gas for finishing in top 3 of the feature. The GSPSS has a unique way of paying it out through the field so it isn’t the same driver taking all the money every week.”
Also on race day, AR Bodies will be presenting a $100 gift certificate to one lucky driver at each event, picked by GSPSS officials. Drivers that gain the most positions in an event will be rewarded with the Hard Charger Award presented by Crazy Ed’s Powersports, to the tune of $100, as well as the Draco Springs award for a gift certificate for a Draco Spring. Finally, the Race Depot will present a $100 gift certificate at random at each GSPSS event. These generous awards by the GSPSS contingency sponsors total approximately $1000 in prizes and money available to drivers for each event.
The 2014 series champion will be rewarded for his hard work throughout the season at the year-end banquet. The Race Depot will present the GSPSS champ with a helmet at the 2014 Awards Banquet. Velocita Premium Driving Apparel will also present the champion with 50% off a new fire suit. These awards will accent the championship package nicely.
The series champion will not be the only driver to benefit at the Awards Banquet. AR Bodies will be sponsoring the 2014 Rookie of the Year award with a $1000 gift certificate. AR Bodies will also be giving away two $500 gift certificates at random at the 2014 banquet. Five Star Stock Car Bodies will also be giving away two $500 gift certificates at the 2014 banquet, along with Velocita Premium Racing Apparel presenting 3 $250 gift certificates for their products in a random drawing. Draco Springs has agreed to sponsor the 2014 Most Improved Driver Award, rewarding the recipient with a $500 bonus, as well as a gift certificate for four Draco Springs to be given out at random at the Awards Banquet. Drivers will have a chance to walk away with over $5000 in prizes from the 2014 Awards Banquet.
The GSPSS would also like to welcome Waddell Communications and Racing Electronics to the team in 2014. Racing Electronics is the official radio of the GSPSS for the upcoming season. The Granite State Pro Stock Series thanks each and every one of our contingency sponsors for the 2014 season. Please show your support to these companies for helping to make the third season for the Granite State Pro Stock Series possible.
Bill Kimball Jr. is prepared for the season opening Spring Dash event at Monadnock Speedway on April 19, but he recently topped off his 2013 track and state championship celebrations in Concord, N.H. New Hampshire Governor Maggie Hassan personally congratulated Kimball on his first NASCAR Whelen All-American Series state title.
Kimball won his fourth NASCAR Sportsman Modified track championship at Monadnock in Winchester, N.H., in 2013. He also picked up points in five Small Block Super-Modified division starts at Lee (N.H.) USA Speedway. “It was quite an opportunity to meet Gov. Hassan,” Kimball, 41, of Bennington, N.H., said of the Feb. 25 visit. “She was very nice. I never thought I’d get to go to the State House and meet the governor for winning a championship.
“She’s been to Loudon [New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, N.H.] and she was at Lee last year for the Governor’s Cup race. She talked about going to those races.”
Kimball’s state championship-winning record was two wins, 13 top-fives and 20 top-10s in 21 starts. “It’s been overwhelming the way NASCAR treated us at the Charlotte banquet in December, and then arranging the visit with the governor,” Kimball said. “NASCAR does a lot of things – goes the extra mile – to make a championship special.”
Joining Kimball in the visit with the governor was his wife Theresa, Michelle Cloutier of Monadnock and Bill Callen of Lee USA. “We’ve had a lot of snow up here this winter so we’re looking forward to the third Saturday in April when Monadnock opens,” Kimball said. “We’re getting ready to go after the championships again.”
In addition to the April 19 Monadnock opener, Lee USA’s NASCAR season opens May 30.
Stock car racer Chris Bergeron isn’t backing off any time soon. In his first season at Devil’s Bowl Speedway last summer, the veteran driver posted four victories and the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model division championship. He wants even more success this year, and he’s willing to get it the hard way.
“I’m going for it,” Bergeron said. “If there’s an opening on the outside lane – even if I only have a ten-percent chance of passing the car in front of me – I’m going to try.”
A sizzling summer-long battle with rookie Josh Masterson came down to final lap of the season, and Bergeron won by just four points. The Claremont, NH runner says he won the championship – the fifth of his career – with a mix of hard-charging runs, respect for his competitors, and a touch of perspective.
“Most people don’t see racing the way that my team and I do,” Bergeron said. “We go to the track to have fun and to focus on the race that night,” Bergeron said. “If you run up front the championships will come, but that means you have to go after every spot rather than just settle for a decent finish.”
Bergeron found himself having fun running with some young racers last year. “Robert Bryant, Brandon Atkins, Josh Masterson, and a few others, I’ve tried to help them learn a few things,” Bergeron said. “Some of them took a few weeks to settle in to the Late Model cars and figure out how to race at this level, but by the end of the year they were great to race with. I have a ton of respect for them.”
Bergeron also gives credit to his team. “My son, Cory, and guys like Gary LaClair, Tony Frasier, Tim Bergeron, Phil Chastenay, and Tom Munuka are what makes this car fast, and especially Larry Stevens, who’s in the garage with me almost every night,” Bergeron said. The team returns with sponsors Gary’s Claremont Tire, Phil’s Signs & Stripes, Revered Painting, Ray Morin, and Vermont Life Safety, and together they’ll try to become the first repeat Late Model champions in Devil’s Bowl’s asphalt era.
Devil’s Bowl Speedway opens on Sunday, May 4 at 1:30pm with the Spring Green event for the American-Canadian Tour Late Models and the Bond Auto Parts Modified, Renegade, and Central Vermont Motorcycles Mini Stock divisions of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. The Late Model division’s regular season championship opens on Friday, May 16.
The best group of young talent in nearly 30 years has emerged to challenge some of the biggest stock car racing stars in the Northeast during the 2014 American Canadian Tour (ACT) upcoming season.
“Having this many talented young teams is exactly what ACT racing was designed for. All these teams have come out of weekly tracks and are now testing the longer distance events. ACT tries to create schedules that will still allow teams to race at their “home tracks” during the height of the race season. We have lots of events scheduled in early Spring and later in the Fall. Watching these new young teams develop has become one of the most fun parts of the business for me. There is nothing more exciting than to see a young racer win his/her first major event!!”, said Tom Curley, long-time promoter of ACT racing.
The new campaign is led by two former Rookie of the Year contenders, Jimmy Hebert from Williamstown, VT andBobby Therrien of Hinesburg, VT. There is a great deal of excitement about the depth of talent in the field as the 2014 campaign begins at Lee USA’s Governor’s Cup 150 on Sunday, April 13, 2014. Hebert is the defending champion of the Governor’s Cup. He also won a second event on the mile at the Sanair Super Speedway in St Pie, Quebec a year ago. Therrien is led by veteran crew chief Pete Duto and his Fast One/Subway race team. Defending ACT Rookie of the Year Therrien handily won a 150-lap feature at the White Mountain Motorsports Park in North Woodstock, NH during his inaugural touring year in 2013.
One of the most consistent racers during last year’s 16-race season was Mooresville, North Carolina’s Ben Lynch. Lynch finished an impressive 5th in points with eight (8) top ten finishes during the campaign in 2013. Joining the generation of young talent for the coming season on the ACT traveling circuit will be Travis Stearns from Auburn, ME driving the Mickey Green-prepared, Richard Green entry. Stearns also garnered his first win in his rookie season during 2013, winning the prestigious Labor Day Classic 200 at Thunder Road, beating a stellar field of regular Thunder Road teams and ACT teams.
Part-time tour contenders making first-time, full efforts in 2014 are Emily Packard, a Thunder Road weekly regular in 2013, and Brandon Atkins from Ausable, New York. As first-time touring and part-time participants in 2013, both received high marks from the veterans at ACT and were able to get many laps of experience last season. Both were impressive enough to be invited to the Bond ACT Invitational at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway in 2013.
“I think it is great that we are getting so many good young teams into the ACT system”, said (8) eight-time ACT Champion Brian Hoar. “These kids have very good equipment and it is fun to race with them. It is gratifying to know that there is a pool of talented depth keeping ACT Late Model racing healthy in the region,” concluded Hoar.
The ACT opening event at Lee USA Speedway in Lee, NH will take place with a full practice on Saturday, April 12 and a 150-lap feature event on Sunday, April 13, 2014. Qualifying will begin at 1:00 on Sunday.
Lee USA Speedway announces the addition of the 4 Cylinder Ironman division to the 2014 season. This division will participating in the Division V level for the NASCAR Whelen All American Racing Series. The sister division to the new division is the V6 Ironman series. The V6 Ironman series will continue as the Division IV representative from Lee USA.
The rules package for the new division is very similar to the V6 Ironman. The speedway tech department has worked to identify a set of rules that can allow the 4 cylinders to have a division within the NASCAR sanctioned events in the State of New Hampshire and possible recognition at the national level if found to be in the top 100 from the division across the United States.
One of the deviations from the V6 Ironman rule book is the inclusion (in a controlled manner) of foreign models, as an example the Honda. As tech has pointed out this is a Pure Stock division met to allow the beginner a place to gain experience at an affordable cost. To quote tech, “we will not allow the special high performance package vehicles”.
This 4 cylinder Ironman Division will compete along with the V6 Ironman Division under the Benson’s Lumber and Hardware Sponsorship umbrella.
The tech department will have the final review of the rules complete and ready to post early next week.
Two of the North Country’s prominent asphalt stock car racing tracks – Devil’s Bowl Speedway in West Haven, VT and Airborne Park Speedway in Plattsburgh, NY – will be closely aligned in 2014. Devil’s Bowl owner Mike Bruno and Airborne owner Jamie Atkins have formed a partnership aimed at strengthening both tracks for the immediate and distant future.
Bruno has accepted a management position at the 4/10-mile, D-shaped Airborne Park Speedway. Effective immediately, Bruno will assume the roles of Race Operations Manager and Competition Director at Airborne, working closely with Atkins, general manager Sherm Hamel, the veteran Airborne staff, and race teams in all divisions at the speedway. Bruno plans to activate similar strategies at Airborne that have helped to significantly improve Devil’s Bowl Speedway since he took control of the track in October 2011.
Both tracks are sanctioned by the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, and both tracks feature similar racing classes with many of the same competitors in their weekly programs. Bruno brings intimate knowledge of the NASCAR program and has many long-lasting relationships at the track from his years as a competitor; he won championships there in 1997 and 2006.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to give back to the Airborne community, and at the same time I’m excited about the benefits for both Airborne and Devil’s Bowl as we work together,” Bruno said. “My family’s history at the track goes back more than 30 years, so it’s a home away from home for me. I can’t wait to help bring Airborne into the next phase of its future with Jamie Atkins and the staff.”
“I’m looking forward to working with Mike Bruno,” Atkins said. “Our challenge is to embrace the changing short track industry while building upon our strengths to keep the future of our sport exciting and affordable for fans and competitors alike. Having both tracks pointed in the same direction will help us sustain Airborne as a family entertainment destination in the North Country.”
Airborne Park Speedway’s 61st season opens on Saturday, May 3, followed on Sunday, May 4 by Devil’s Bowl Speedway’s 48th season opener, the historic American-Canadian Tour Spring Green. Devil’s Bowl runs weekly Friday night events during the summer, with Airborne running weekly on Saturday nights.
Airborne Park Speedway is located on Broderick Road in South Plattsburgh, NY, one mile from Exit 36 on Interstate 87.

Veteran Eddie MacDonald showed a little late-race mastery on Saturday afternoon and brought home the winning trophy from Bristol Motor Speedway.
The 33-year-old driver from Rowley, Mass., took the lead on a green-white-checkered finish at the PittLite 125 and held off Gray Gaulding and Ben Rhodes to win the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race at “The Last Great Colosseum.”
It’s MacDonald’s first win since September of 2009 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway snapping a 53-race winless streak and the seventh of his career.
The rookie Rhodes, 17, was looking for his first career win in his 10th start. He won the 21 Means 21 Pole Award in qualifying Thursday and led every lap Saturday up until the final restart. A late wreck set up the extended finish that pushed the race to 132 laps.
MacDonald qualified 13th and steadily worked his way to the front on the high-banked half-mile. He took second on Lap 120 and got past Rhodes for the lead heading into Turn 3 on the penultimate lap. Gaulding also got by Rhodes at the finish to take second.
Brennan Newberry and Austin Hill rounded out the top five.
Patrick Staropoli finished sixth, followed by Dave Garbo Jr., Brandon Jones, Matt Tifft and Michael McGuire.
Daniel Suarez, who won the first two races of the season, pitted out of the top 10 late in the race for a flat time and wound up 26th. His misfortune allowed Gaulding to take the points lead by four of Suarez and six over Rhodes.
The PittLite 125 will air on FOX Sports 1 on Saturday, March 22 at 11:30 a.m. ET. The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East will return to the track on Saturday, March 22 for the Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet 150 at Greenville (S.C.) Pickens Speedway.

Dirt track racing in NH and Vt will be getting a boost with the announcement that DIRTcar will be sanctioning racing events at both Bear Ridge Speedway in Bradford, VT and Legion Speedway in Rumney, NH. Four DIRTcar Sportsman Modified events will be run at those two dirt ovals. That’s good news for the region considering that at the end of last year the dirt and paved tracks at the Canaan Fairgrounds closed up following the sale to a green group that plans to test electric cars at that site.
