Two-time American-Canadian Tour (ACT) Champion Wayne Helliwell Jr. was in the right place at the right time on Saturday night, taking his second win of the season in the rain-shortened Generation Next 151 at Speedway 51 in Groveton, NH.

Helliwell got the break on Rowley, MA’s Eddie MacDonald on a lap-85 restart and was in front when the caution flew for Travis Stearns’ spin a lap later. A caution for rain came out on the subsequent restart. Although the race was able to resume, the rains returned just five laps later, forcing the conclusion of the event after 91 of the scheduled 151 laps.

The tradition of the Spring Green, which began in 1974 at Catamount Stadium in Milton, VT, has moved around over the years from track to track. It has been run at Plattsburgh, NY’s Airborne Park Speedway on 21 occasions, the most of any track. The list of winners is a history book of Late Model racing in the northeast (see below). The 41st edition of the race took place at Airborne last Sunday, arguably one of the favorite tracks the ACT Late Models appear at each year. A perfect day for racing and a spirited battle between friendly rivals Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. of Hudson, NH and St-Denis, QC’s Patrick Laperle kept fans from both sides of the border happy for the entire event. The other seven-team battle that raged for the second half of the event was also an example of great short track racing.

**[Just some of the names to have won the Spring Green over the years from Northern NASCAR, NASCAR North, the ACT Pro Stock Tour, the Tiger Sportsman Tour, and the ACT Late Model Tour: Dragon (3), Dion, Cabana, Mike Barry, Leclair, Kourafas, Fadden, Leclerc, Hanley, Lepage, Hoar, Nason, Scott, Cyr, Helliwell, Polewarczyk, Jr.]**

Hudson, NH’s Joey Polewarczyk Jr. came out on top of a battle with St-Denis, QC’s Patrick Laperle to win the American-Canadian Tour (ACT) Spring Green 115 at Airborne Park Speedway in Plattsburgh, NY on Sunday. Defending ACT Late Model Tour Champion “Joey Pole” took the lead from Laperle on lap 82 and led the rest of the way in the ACT U.S. and Série ACT combination event. Pole had lost the top spot to Laperle on a lap 44 restart, but stalked him for nearly 40 laps and eventually came away with his second win of the season and second straight ACT victory at Airborne.

“Anytime you have to battle Patrick, it’s tough,” Pole said. “He races me with so much respect and I try to give him the same. He got me on that restart on lap 44, and it was definitely nerve-wracking trying to get back by him…we got it inch by inch and kept working the inside and were finally able to get by.”

Week two at Claremont Speedway thrust the entry level Sanell Auto Parts wildcats into the spotlight. Extra laps and a larger purse saw twenty one teams come to compete and the action was intense! Numerous cautions flew early in the event as the drivers tried to position their machines for a late race charge for the win. At lap twenty five Matt Gauffin, in his Saab, got together with Kodi Sabins as they tried to put Mike Kowalczyk a lap down in turns one and two. The contact caused Gauffins car to spin to the infield and come to a stop, sending him to the rear for the ensuing restart. When the green flag flew the charge was on and last weeks winner, Gauffin, headed back to the front. Just three laps later Gauffin had driven his car back to the lead group were he again, got together with Sabins bringing out another yellow flag. The contact sent Sabins on a wild ride into the turn two sand bank and Gauthen was sent to the pits by race control, ending the night for both teams.

When the green flew once again, Josh Rondeau would power his car to the front and never look back picking up his first win of the season. Craig Smith, in a car he purchased from Rondeau, would finish second while Alexis Aiken would come home third. Kyle Currier and Cole Littlewood would round out the top five. Heat race wins went to Kodi Sabins, Matt Gauffin and Cole Littlewood.
