Race of Champions Asphalt Modifieds head for Airborne

South Plattsburgh – Race of Champions Asphalt Modified teams from every corner of New York state will be hauling to Plattsburgh this Saturday for the Della Auto Group 100 at Airborne Speedway.

The lightweight, low-slung NASCAR Tour-type Modifieds run wide slicks and put out 600-plus HP.

Chuck Hossfeld, winner of last weekend’s RoC Series opener at Oswego Speedway, and runner-up Erick Rudolph will make the trip from greater Buffalo. The father and son team of Jan and Mike Leaty hails from Rochester. Two-time Series runner-up Deren Scherer will head north from Binghamton. Top runner Kyle Ebersole, 18, races out of Harrisburg, PA.

For, while they have been literal fixtures on the podium at America’s traditional midsummer endurance race during their illustrious careers, they still have yet to taste victory during the month of June at the legendary Watkins Glen (N.Y.) Airborne hosts Asphalt Modified Series

South Plattsburgh – The Race of Champions (RoC) Asphalt Modified Series will make its first ever appearance at Airborne Speedway Saturday, June 4, one week after its 2011 schedule begins at Oswego Speedway.

Teams entered in the Della Auto Group 100 include defending RoC champion Matt Hirschman of Northampton, PA, Chuck Hossfeld of Ransomville, NY, Pete Brittain of Allentown, PA, Daren Scherer of Binghamton, NY and Erick Rudolph of Ransomville, NY.

Roy catches Berthiaume for Airborne win

South Plattsburgh – In a Canadian battle for the checkers, Martin Roy of Napierville, QC wheeled around Pierre Berthiaume of Joliette, QC on a lap 19 restart and went on to win the Modified 30-lap feature at Airborne Speedway.

Berthiaume had held off Roy, Bryant Trim and Patrick Dupree for 15 laps before the race’s fourth caution closed the field. Dupree left on the hook after contact on the backstretch as Greg Atkins of Clintonville and George Foley of Saranac Lake moved into contention.
